And it's all over, ending in failure...

Failure might just kick-start England's recovery :(

England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 after losing a sensational game against Croatia at Wembley.

England went 2-0 down when Scott Carson, in for Paul Robinson, helped Nico Kranjcar's shot into the net and then Ivica Olic slipped in a second.

Frank Lampard pulled one back from the spot after Jermain Defoe was fouled, before David Beckham, winning a 99th cap, set up Peter Crouch to level it.

But Mladen Petric fired in from 25 yards to break England's hearts.

The result will surely cost Steve McClaren his job as England manager and after such an abysmal display, he can have few complaints.

So when you lot are out enjoying life in the european cup finals, we will be on this little island having a little "Home Nations Championship", England vs Wales Vs Scotland vs Northern Ireland vs Ireland. Any more losers want to join us?

Failure might just kick-start England's recovery :(
A recovery that's not going to happen overnight, and it shouldn't start with the mananger. This has set back English football 15 years, remember when the rot started? Ginola was signed for Newcastle. That's when it all began, the old downfall of English football. The Premiership is the best league in the world, at a price, and that price is the English national team. The sooner this country realises that the earlier we can start to rectify grass roots football instead of spending money on foreign players. Some of tonight's football was schoolboy stuff, it wasn't the rain, it wasn't the pitch, it WAS because we're not GOOD ENOUGH.

Shocking but true.

Lol, no British team next year in Austria and Switzerland??? :laugh3: :sneaky::\

Well, I agree with Ian. You probably have the second best league worldwide (after Spain), but the price you pay for it is the fact that your national team became extremely weak. Last year during World Cup you could see that they might get a few problems in the near future.

For me it seems that you're now at a point where Germany has been in 2000. We had nearly the same problem (old players, talented players who didn't get a chance to play in the Bundesliga), although we qualified for the tournament. Now it's important that more and more young players are getting chances to play in the Premier League.

Take your chance to create a new team and you'll have no problem to play in South Africa in 2010 that's for sure.

To be honest I'm more sorry about Scotland than England, because their squad really deserved to be qualified. Not every team won at Stade de France...

:laugh3: :laugh3:

I've said it before, we'll never win anything. We're arrogant, over-hyped and overrated. The funny thing is that Croatia's incentive were Mercedes' and they still looked more hungry than the all-mighty England who's incentive was QUALIFICATION! Its not McClaren's fault alone, we, the fans, the media and the players themselves, have to realise that we aren't as good as we like to think.

Yes, I'm English and I'm very proud too, but I'm glad we didn't get in as we simply didn't deserve it.

Peace.

Ian...you're too strict with yourself...

English is not that bad team who played yesterday...There weren't Terry and Rooney. The real guilty are two:McClaren, and the FA

The coach....which wan't unexperienced....reminded me ours, Donadoni. But the difference has been Donadoni choosed the right men at the right moment. This is a matter of lucky too....which McClaren didn't have

Although isn't justifiable CARSON (!) as a goalkeeper....and his play, which didn't exist yesterday...

The other guilty is FA....I think they choosed McClaren because he was English...and they didn't want another foreign coach on your bench....

What they'll do now? Will take Mourinho,Lippi,Capello?( who yesterday was a bit happy when croatia scored) or the Colchester coach just because he comes from England?

I agree with you Ian...when you say you've too many foreign players on your beautiful league (which is the best in the world). But this analysis should be about your coaches too.

I know i'm saying heavy things......and my view can be superficial.....cause i don't live there...

i'm sorry for you guys, cause you're my mates....and i admire your reaction after this...i'd have destroyed all my house!

Did I ever tell you I'm part Dutch :P

Well that certainly explains how you often speak double Dutch!!:P

The sad truth is that England have become far too reliant on their handful of truly world-class players.

There are no replacements for Owen, Rooney, Terry, Ferdinand and Ashley Cole, who were all missing last night, and even Beckham, bearing in mind he's now in the twilight of his career.

Crouch does his best (and was England's best player last night), but the only world-class player who started for England against Croatia was Gerrard, who was as disappointing as everyone last night.

England haven't had a world-class 'keeper since Seaman retired, either.

The situation is dire.:(

Yes - and his replacement, Wayne Bridge, was useless.

No. He's out long-term.

Olic and Petric are playing for Hamburg and Dortmund. ;)

Well, it's really hard to imagine a tournament without England. Even if the squad didn't deserve to be qualified I feel sorry for all the English people who are totally football mad. Perhaps they will get Klinsmann or Capello as a new coach. That would be amazing. :)

Anyway, I'm so happy that Germany didn't win yesterday against Wales, because then we would have been in pot 1 due to the 1:2 defeat of the Netherlands in Belarus. Cannot wait 'til the drawing and to be able to book my journey to Vienna.

Gordon Brown calls for the return of home internationals to fill next summer's football black hole

Gordon Brown has called for a revival of the home internationals between England and Scotland to make up for next summer's football black hole.

He said a return to a legendary competition marked by pitch invasions and tragedy would help restore national morale after England's ignominious failure to qualify for Euro08.

Mr Brown, who had been urged by some to stay away from Wembley in case he jinxed England's chances, expressed his regret at the result as he flew to Uganda for the Commonwealth summit.

He called on the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to consider reviving the British Home Championship, which was suspended in 1984.

MerkBrownG_468x387.jpgBrown chortles as England fall to defeat against Germany. The PM wants the home nations to compete against each other in a regular competition

The Scots Prime Minister, who recently discovered a passion for English football, said:

"It's desperately disappointing that there will be no British teams at the European championship. In some cases that's down to bad luck. In some it's bad results. We have the Olympics to look forward to next summer.

"I know every football fan in Britain was looking forward to a summer of football next year, so it's very disappointing.

"I know some people have called for a one off revival next year of the home intrnationals. That's something for the football associations and clubs to consider.

"I would certainly enjoy that. I have got great memories from the 60s and 70s. But that's a decision for the football authorities."

The FA is likely to seize on the idea as a cash-raising solution to the loss of next summer's predicted revenues of at least £20 million, and a way of using Wembley Stadium.

But the clubs are likely to oppose a scheme that could put their players at risk.

The suggestion also carries political risks for Mr Brown as the championships could stoke tensions between England and Scotland at a time when the SNP administration in Edinburgh is pressing its case for independence.

The home internationals became an iconic manifestation of the rivalry between England and Scotland in the 1960s and 70s.

Scotland famously beat England at Wembley 3-2 in 1967, in a match that saw jubilant Scots fans invade the pitch and claim they were 'world champions' for beating the '66 World Cup winners.

In 1977 Scots fans celebrated a 2-1 win over England by tearing up the pitch and carried it in pieces back to Scotland, along with bits of the England crossbar.

Although many prominent Scots claim to have taken part in the mayhem, a spokesman for Mr Brown said he never attended the Wembley matches.

But the 1902 Scotland-England fixture at Ibrox Park in Glasgow was declared void after a stand collapse in the first half killed 26 and injured 500.
