[Q Awards 2006] Coldplay Miss Out To Oasis For Best Act

The Arctic Monkeys stole the show at the Q Awards today - toppling Oasis from their throne.

The Sheffield scallies scooped two of the most prestigious gongs at the biggest rock and roll event of the year - for Best Album and the People's Choice Award.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, sold over 360,000 copies in its first week this year, making it the fastest selling debut album in the UK since records began.

Oasis did the double in the same categories last year - despite protests from Noel Gallagher that they were too old and should not have dominated the event. Instead Noel Gallagher was named Classic Songwriter at the star-studded bash in London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, presented by TV funnyman Jonathan Ross. And Oasis won Best Act In The World Today. They were expected to win that particular title last year - but were beaten by Coldplay.

Best Track went to Gnarls Barkley for his contagious song Crazy. The single is the first to top the UK chart for nine weeks consecutively since Wet Wet Wet's Love Is All Around in 1994. Best Live Act went to Devon rock band Muse and Best Video to The Killers for When You Were Young. Best New Act went to Leeds-born soul-singer Corinne Bailey Rae.

Meanwhile boyband Take That picked up the Idol Award, off the back of their hugely successful UK tour earlier this year. The band reunited after a 10-year split in late 2005. Sixties cult band The Who were honoured with a Legend Award. U2, who won Best Live Act last year, picked up two gongs.

Peter Gabriel, who rose to fame in Genesis, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award. GIRLS ALOUD, THE SUGABABES, ORSON, RAZORLIGHT and THE KOOKS, were among celebrities at the magazine event.

I love that Muse and U2 won Awards.

I congratulate Oasis on winning, but disagree with the BAIWT title. Not because I'm a huge Coldplay fan - I am and would prefer them ;) , but because they simply aren't (anymore).

Also - correct me if I'm wrong - isn't their fame more or less limited to the UK these days?

A.

I deeply love and respect Oasis, but I have to agree with all of the other posters!

BUT - I just assume that Oasis were so pissed that their band lost out to Coldplay last year, that they voted immensly this time :P And in addition - let's face the truth, for UK music lovers, the UK alone IS the world ^^

Hmm i don't know, they are really really good :)

But i think u2 earned this award more. Cause they are more than 25 years together and still they make good albums.

Even if you don't like their music you can't deny they are great.

Ofcourse i'm a very big fan of coldplay really :)

But let's face the truth :)

In a few years Coldplay is maybe even bigger than u2 :)

It's a shame that Coldplay missed this award...Oasis is not the best band in the world, although I really really thing Noel deserved the award for classic songwriter cause he's such a legend (as Lima is of course). But the thing I most love about this: Karma chameleon won the award for classic song! I love that song!

We shouldn't forget that it's about being the Best Act in the World TODAY - and neither Oasis nor U2 are that right now ;) They both WERE, definitely, they're both amazing, legends, great, brilliant, I love both of these bands! But.. it's about who's the biggest TODAY, and you can't beat Coldplay in that point :P

Well you have to admit coldplay has had a quiet year... but oasis did not deserve to win best act in the world! somebody else should have won... nobody even knows them in the united states! i don't know a single person who knows who they are.

Coldplay is still the best to me!!!

It doesn't surprise me that they didn't get it this year, purely because they got it last year. 'Q' - and most award givers - like to share them out to keep everyone happy and keep things varied.

Also, Coldplay didn't attend the show, but Oasis and U2 both did. Apparently that counts for a lot when they are deciding who wins what!

Anyway, I don't think the 'Q' award is exactly super presigious (like the Ivor Novello award or the Grammy's)... it's just a magazine after all.
