UPDATE 1-Soccer-Beckham to leave Real and sign for LA Galaxy@

MADRID, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Former England captain David Beckham will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season and sign a five-year deal for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy, he told Reuters on Thursday.

The 31-year-old, who joined Real from Manchester United in June 2003, is the most famous player to sign up for Major League Soccer since it began in 1996.

"This week Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract for a further two seasons," Beckham told Reuters.

"After discussing several options with my family and my advisors to either stay here in Madrid or join other major British and European teams I have decided to join LA Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year."

he has a football academy in US (am i right?), his wife would like to live there, his children could go to a normal english speaking school and probably many other advantages... + of course, the money that he'll get

 

so his choice is understandable. from now on he's just unofficially retired

i dont understand his decision. i do think that hes good enough to carry on playing in a top league. but its all about money i suppose. as if he wasnt rich enough to afford anything he wants anyway.

Toronto's fielding a new MLS team, that will be hosting LA Galaxy for their season openner...when the Beckham story borke, the phones starting ringing off the hook, and Toronto ticket sales for the match escalated!

my best friend said the same thing! lol He said Becks wants to be a Hollywood star and this is his way in... lol I think it might prove to be a good move to spike footy intrest in the US but, its not like he doesn't have a vested intrested in the Galaxy...... its a win win situation for him....

128 million pounds seems extravagant but its certainly worthwhile for LA. theyll get their money back in ticket sales in less than a week. football's popularity in the US is underrated....ppl will be flocking to the games.

the money converts over to about 250 million USD including endorsements and such.....
