i'm listening to a ska song and i realized i never heard anyone ever mention this genre here. any of you fans? know any good ska bands?

I like some ska from time to time but I don't listen to it that much ...

 

However, I suppose that The Skatelites, Mad Caddies and Elvis Jackson are quite ska. or at least ska punk (the second and the third band).

the only ska i like is no doubt and i own a few less than jake songs found in my recieved files on msn

 

but as a whole it's meh

But I think that it's something the best for those who find themselves in it. And those who don't, don't listen to it that much.

Yeah, I agree. Well, we've got a quite good band here in the Czech republic. It's calle d TleSKAč, and I've already been to a perfomance and it was brilliant. Although I don't know many bands which are known world-wide.

so once again, there's a musical genre that i randomly came around to check some months ago.

 

i firstly wanted to know about punk (music, influence in society, their ideals and so on) and somehow it lead me to check ska aswell.

 

if i remember well there was a thread opened by brutino about it and i bumped the punk thread aswell back then.

 

first ska-punkish band i'd check: dead kennedys.

then reel big fish and lanwagon. (from what i've read those two are releasing new album this year) other than those, there's really few bands i did checked that did sounded much good and some are tagged as ska when don't sound like it or don't match the other 'sign' of the genre, at least the original idea.

 

ska is a very festive melody (as to say is the grandfather of reggae) with political lyrics, criticism or protest about something that one dislikes mostly, at least in the origin.

i agree with the disagreement, No Doubt being Ska? :confused:

hum, i have to reckon that Vampire Weekend sound quite festive band, but other than that i see no ska relation to it i shall check it better.

Early No Doubt is definitely ska. They evolved from there. Even as they evolved, their music still had a ska sound to it, specifically the guitar sound. By the way, I hate music labeling, so I'm not sure why I commented.

There are a lot of younger bands who play this sometimes mixed with rock or punk like the Mighty Bosstones. There was some from the 1980s like the Specials. You can see videos of this on Youtube.
