Liverpool 4-2 Arsenal (agg 5-3)

Diaby fired Arsenal into an early lead

Liverpool set up a Champions League semi-final with Chelsea after a stunning late win over Arsenal.

Abou Diaby put Arsenal into an early lead but Sami Hyypia lost Phillipe Senderos to head an equaliser.

Fernando Torres looked to have settled the tie when he turned and drilled into the top corner only for Emmanuel Adebayor to level.

But Kolo Toure fouled Ryan Babel and Gerrard held his nerve from the spot before Babel added a fourth.

It was an extraordinary end to a wonderful European tie at Anfield.

The two sides, who have faced each other three times in six days, saved their best for last in a game that was full of drama from start to finish.

Both sides played as if there season was on the line and it led to a pulsating cup tie.

Arsenal looked like they had a new lease of life from the side that started their game at the weekend.

It was little surprise when they went in front through Diaby, who was making his return to the side.

He burst into the box to get on the end of Hleb's pass and drove a low shot that Reina could only help into the net.

The goal seemed to energise Arsenal further and it was Liverpool who were beginning to look jaded.

But the Gunners were made to pay after half an hour when Senderos was caught flat footed and Hyypia had the freedom of the Anfield penalty box to head past Cesc Fabregas and in off the post.

It was Liverpool's turn to have the upper hand and they went ahead with a superb strike from Torres.

Rafa Benitez's decision to partner Peter Crouch with Torres had looked like a tactical blunder at the start, but it was a pairing that combined for their second goal.

Crouch's flick on was latched onto Torres, who turned and shot in an instant to send the Kop into delirium.

Adebayor was just off target from Emmanuel Eboue's cross but Arsenal looked dead on the ropes.

But Theo Walcott's introduction revitalised their hopes and he ran from inside his own half and into Liverpool's box before squaring for Adebayor to tap in.

But straight away Liverpool went down the other end and Babel was adjudged to have been brought down by Toure.

Gerrard made no mistake from the spot, firing into the top corner.

There was even time for Babel to run clear and add a fourth - and perhaps ease the pain of the penalty decision for the visitors.

It was a cruel exit for Arsenal but there was no denying it was Liverpool's night.

Chelsea 2-0 Fenerbahce (3-2)

Ballack glances in the Chelsea opener against Fenerbahce

Chelsea set up a meeting with Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Champions League as Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard earned victory over Fenerbahce.

Ballack latched on to Joe Cole's free-kick from the right after four minutes to head past Volkan Demirel.

Cole clipped a shot against the post soon after, before Chelsea lost keeper Carlo Cudicini to a hamstring injury.

Lugano and Ugur Boral went close for the Turks before Lampard tapped in late on after good work from Michael Essien.

The result, coupled with Liverpool's 5-3 aggregate win over Arsenal, means the two clubs will go head-to-head in the Champions League semi-finals for the third time in four seasons.

With Chelsea only three points behind leaders Manchester United in the Premier League, they must harbour genuine hopes of winning both trophies now.

After losing the first leg 2-1 there were nerves aplenty at Stamford Bridge, but they were settled somewhat with only four minutes on the clock as the hosts' barnstorming start led to a crucial opener.

Essien was fouled down the right and when Cole swung in the cross, Ballack was on hand to plant a header downwards and across the keeper into the far corner of the net.

Chelsea had started like a train and Salomon Kalou scampered down the left and pulled the ball back for Cole to impudently flick it against the right-hand post with Volkan well beaten.

But having made such a fine start, Chelsea inexplicably dropped the tempo and began to allow Fenerbahce a route back into the contest.

The mood of the visitors improved when Blues keeper Cudicini limped off clutching his hamstring, replaced by Portuguese substitute Hilario.

With Petr Cech out for at least another two weeks with his facial injury, a problem for Cudicini must have been the last thing boss Avram Grant wanted at such a key stage of the season.

Soon after, Hilario was rooted to his line as Lugano sneaked in at the back post to meet an Alex free-kick, but he wastefully headed off target.

Chelsea's increasing willingness to gift possession away continued to make the contest closer than it might have been and only served to give the visitors hope.

Didier Drogba tried to increase the Blues' lead, but twice the big striker saw shots from distance fall into the arms of Volkan.

Fenerbahce brought on former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman on the hour mark in place of defensive midfielder Claudio Maldonado as they went searching for a goal that would turn the tie around.

Chelsea nearly wrapped it up when Drogba forced Volkan to parry away his 25-yard free-kick, before the Turks went close twice in agonising fashion.

First, substitute Ugur saw his deflected volley scrambled off the line by Hilario, before first leg hero Colin Kazim-Richards stung the palms of Hilario with a 25-yard drive.

After Essien picked up a needless booking for throwing the ball away which will keep him out of the first leg against Liverpool, he got to the byeline and crossed for Lampard to tap in.

It was no more and no less than they deserved for a display which failed to sparkle but got the job done.

GET IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bring on Chelsea :P :D

I don't like football usually but that was well exciting!

The goal that Theo Walcott made reminded me of Michael Owen's wondergoal for England against Argentina in 1998 - I was having flashbacks as Theo ripped our defence apart. Ah Michael Owen, I miss him. He was my first ever 'favourite player'.

Hopefully Johnny boy will be celebrating like this again after the Semi-Finals!

Confident Ferguson eyes last four

_44528857_fergusongetty203.jpg

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Manchester United will get past Roma to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

United won the first leg 2-0 in Rome and Ferguson feels the fact the Italian side will have to attack on Wednesday will play into his side's hands.

"We have got one foot in the semis. We are not looking to do anything silly, that's the first thing," he said.

"Roma have to do something, which might suit us because I think on the counter-attack we are very good."

United are well-placed to secure a semi-final against either Barcelona or Schalke 04 - with the Spaniards the favourites after a 1-0 first-leg win in Germany - and Ferguson is relishing the prospect.

"Hopefully, we can produce performances that get us to the final," he said.

"If we get by this one, the difficult one of course will be Barcelona - a marvellous football club and a good football team.

"If we get to the semi, we can start thinking about a final. We have to have that ambition and hope but the sensible approach is to wait until after the game, see where we are and then start to dream, hopefully."

While Ferguson confirmed his intention to shuffle his line-up, he played down suggestions he might be tempted to rest Cristiano Ronaldo.

"It is difficult to leave Ronaldo out, the form he has been in," Ferguson said. "He has been absolutely outstanding.

"There will be one or two changes, but changes we hope are sensible and give us the result we want."

Following the first leg, Roma midfielder David Pizarro accused Ronaldo of showing a lack of respect by "showboating".

On Tuesday, Mirko Vucinic appeared to back his team-mate's view when he said: "Ronaldo can obviously dribble but he takes it too far and we have told him that."

However, manager Luciano Spalletti sought to defuse any arguments.

"Some of the things said in the aftermath of the defeat were perhaps conditioned by the fact that the defeat left something of a bitter after-taste, in the sense that we were disappointed," said Spalletti.

"Sometimes you might say things that you wouldn't in other circumstances.

"As far as I am concerned, Ronaldo is an excellent player. It's something which he showed against us and he demonstrates what a great player he is through his game.

"He's a very exuberant player, but also a very fair player and he is able to do certain things because of his great potential."

Looking ahead to Wednesday's second leg, Spalletti said the memory of last year's 7-1 thrashing at Old Trafford would play no part.

"Nothing is impossible," he said. "The 7-1 defeat here might tend to suggest there is a huge gap between the two teams, but I don't believe there is.

"I believe my players are capable of over-turning any score. Even though we have lost several matches to Manchester United, we want to be here and we want to play to qualify for the next round."

Vidic has a knee injury, but Ferdinand (foot) will train on Wednesday morning when his fitness will be assessed.

If he is unfit, either Gary Neville or Mikael Silvestre will come into the United side after long-term injuries.

Roma are without influential captain Francesco Totti (thigh), but Simone Perotta is available after suspension.

If Alberto Aquilani is not fit, David Pizarro may replace him for the Italians.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man Utd (from): Van der Sar, Neville, Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Evra, 0'Shea, Ronaldo, Scholes, Anderson, Nani, Hargreaves, Carrick, Giggs, Park, Rooney, Tevez, Kuszczak, Pique.

BIG MATCH STATS

Head-to-heads

Manchester United and AS Roma have met five times before in European competition with United winning three times and Roma once. One match ended undecided. All five have taken place since the beginning of April last year.

The last encounter at Old Trafford, 2 October 2007, ended in a 1-0 win for the home side. The last knock-out meeting at the Theatre of Dreams on 10 April 2007, resulted in an emphatic 7-1 victory for United, who therefore progressed to the semi-finals. This was AS Roma's heaviest ever European defeat and it was also the biggest victory margin recorded in the CL knock-out stages.

European history

Manchester United have won three European trophies - the 1967-68 Champions Cup, 1990-91 Cup Winners' Cup and 1998-99 Champions League.

The Red Devils have been knocked out of European competition by Italian sides six times; four times by AC Milan and twice by Juventus. Last season United they were eliminated by AC Milan in the CL semi-finals, losing 5-3 on aggregate.

In the 1960-61 season, AS Roma won the Fairs Cup, their only piece of European silverware to date. Roma have reached two other European finals; the 1983-84 Champions Cup final which they lost on penalties to Liverpool, and the 1990-91 Uefa Cup final, which they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Internazionale. Roma have never reached the semi-final stage of the Champions League.

Current European form

Manchester United have won their last 10 Champions League home matches. Victory against AS Roma will break the Champions League record which United currently share with Juventus. United are unbeaten in 13 Champions League home matches since losing 1-0 to AC Milan in February 2005.

United are unbeaten in nine Champions League matches home and away, since losing 3-0 at AC Milan in last May's semi-final second leg. Sir Alex Ferguson's side are one of two unbeaten teams in this season's Champions League. Barcelona is the other.

AS Roma are unbeaten in three Champions League away matches.

Player and disciplinary info

Mirko Vucinic, Marco Cassetti, Cicinho, Daniele De Rossi, Max Tonetto and Philippe Mexes (AS Roma) are all one yellow card away from suspension, as are Nani and Patrice Evra (Manchester United).

If selected:-

Edwin van der Sar will be keeping goal in his 100th European match (if his two Uefa Super Cup matches are included). He made his European debut for Ajax in a 3-0 win against Vitoria Guimaraes.

Paul Scholes will be making his 100th Champions League appearance, and become the second person to play a century of Champions League matches for United. Ryan Giggs achieved this milestone in the 1-1 draw at Olympique Lyon in February. Scholes made his CL debut in a 2-2 draw against Barcelona on 19 October 1994.

John O'Shea will be featuring in his 50th Champions League match. He made his debut as a substitute in the 1-1 draw at Lille on 31 October 2001.

Cristiano Ronaldo is this season's top scorer in the Champions League with seven goals. He is the top scorer in the Premier League with 27, and with 37 goals in all competitions for United this season, Ronaldo is endangering Denis Law's club record for most goals in a season (46).

Daniele De Rossi and David Pizarro have played in all nine of AS Roma's Champions League matches this season. No United player has played all nine for their club.

Mirko Vucinic leads Roma goalscorers in this season's Champions League campaign with four goals.

Other miscellaneous facts

This match will be AS Roma's 50th in the Champions League. They have won 16, drawn 17 and lost 16.

Manchester United drew 2-2 with Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Sunday. Cristiano Ronaldo scored in his sixth consecutive game for the club, and Wayne Rooney got the other. The Red Devils lead the Premier League, but their advantage over second placed Chelsea has shrunk to three points.

AS Roma beat Genoa 3-2 in the Serie A on Saturday, following goals from Taddei, Vucinic and De Rossi. Roma are still second in the Serie A, four points behind leaders Internazionale.

Man Utd beat Roma to reach semis

_44554837_tevezpa203.jpg

Tevez ensured United had a comfortable finish to the tie

Carlos Tevez struck as Manchester United defeated Roma to seal a Champions League semi-final match-up with Barcelona.

Roma should have taken the lead from the penalty spot after a foul by Wes Brown but Daniele de Rossi smashed the ball high over the crossbar.

Edwin van der Sar denied Mirko Vucinic as Roma threatened but Ryan Giggs and Owen Hargreaves forced saves from Doni.

And Tevez scored with a diving header from Hargreaves' cross to seal the tie.

The Argentine struck after 70 minutes and it was a goal that punctured any lingering hopes Roma harboured of a dramatic comeback.

The Italians had been left stunned after their 2-0 defeat in Rome but, after enduring a poor start to the second leg, they showed great spirit to rattle their opponents.

And they might have ensured an extremely nervous evening for United had De Rossi not been so wasteful with his penalty kick after 29 minutes.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had shown great faith in his squad prior to kick-off by leaving Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo out of his starting line-up.

They were two of five changes from the team that drew at Middlesbrough on Sunday.

Changes or not, United had more than enough opportunities to kill off the tie in the first 10 minutes.

Park Ji-Sung shot wide after superbly holding his run to stay on-side, Brown completely lost his marker from a corner but then headed over while Doni denied Hargreaves after Giggs brilliantly played the midfielder through on goal.

Having resisted United's early advances, the Italians underlined the threat they possessed when Vucinic drew a save from Van der Sar with a strike from a tight angle.

But Hargreaves was a revelation down the right for United, using his superb athleticism to run on to passes from midfield, and he delivered two telling crosses.

The first was met by Giggs while Anderson drilled a low strike from the second - both efforts drawing saves from Doni.

But Roma should have forced their way back into the tie when referee Tom Hennin Ovrebo ruled that Brown had failed to make any contact with the ball while trying to tackle Mancini.

De Rossi buried his head in his shirt after blazing the spot kick way over the crossbar but Roma took confidence from winning the penalty and enjoyed a spell of possession that saw them end the half on top.

And Roma maintained their sense of momentum after the break - Marco Cassetti just failing to pounce on a rebound, Mikael Silvestre blocking from Rodrigo Taddei and Van der Sar saving a Juan header.

It was in stark contrast to the early minutes when United dominated, however a relatively mundane period of play, in which the home team enjoyed a reasonable spell of possession, settled Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

And after Tevez headed home another excellent Hargreaves cross the tie was effectively settled.

Further good news for the buoyant home fans arrived with 10 minutes left when Gary Neville came on for his first appearance since picking up an ankle injury on 17 March 2007.

Barcelona 1-0 Schalke (agg 2-0)

Barcelona players celebrate Yaya Toure's goal at the Nou Camp

Barcelona booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League with an unconvincing victory over German side Schalke in the Nou Camp.

Barca withstood huge pressure, with Victor Valdes saving from Halil Altintop, Kevin Kuranyi heading wide and Jermaine Jones firing off target.

The hosts went ahead when Bojan Krkic's deflected cross was headed off the line and Yaya Toure tapped in the rebound.

Barca's 2-0 aggregate win sets up a last-four tie with Manchester United.

Frank Rijkaard's side went through fairly comfortably in the end, but the scoreline does not reflect how much of a test they were given by the German side.

After the Catalans were booed off following their poor performance in a 0-0 at home to Getafe on Sunday, Barca had a point to prove in front of their demanding Nou Camp faithful.

Samuel Eto'o, wasted down the right in recent weeks, was back in his more favoured central position and he fired an early warning shot wide - but from then on, the first half was nearly all Schalke.

The influential Altintop forced Valdes to divert his 20-yard shot away, before Kuranyi headed wide from a central position six yards out.

Jones was enjoying himself down the right at Eric Abidal's expense and after he lashed a shot inches wide, he sent in a dangerous cross that only just evaded first Asamoah and then, agonisingly, Kuranyi at the far post.

But just before the break Barca, for whom Xavi had earlier seen a shot well saved by Manuel Neuer, hit Schalke with a hammer blow.

Bojan was put in down the right, his cross deflected up off Marcelo Bordon and was headed brilliantly off the line by Mladen Krstajic, only for Toure to side-foot in from six yards as the ball dropped at his feet.

With more space to play in in the second half, Barca finally began to enjoy themselves.

Bojan teed up Thierry Henry to blaze over, before Andres Iniesta forced a stunning save from Neuer, the big keeper getting down wonderfully to his right to tip away a goalbound 22-yard drive.

Just after the hour mark Barca's semi-final first leg hopes suffered a hammer blow when captain Carles Puyol picked up a yellow card that will keep him out of the Nou Camp tie in two weeks' time.

But if the under-pressure Rijkaard thought the result would appease his club's supporters, the crescendo of boos that erupted around the stadium when he took Bojan off told a different story.

The game eventually fizzled out, but Barca know they will need to be much more impressive if they are to overcome Man Utd and reach the final in Moscow in May.

Barcelona: Valdes, Puyol, Thuram, Zambrotta, Abidal, Iniesta, Toure Yaya (Marquez 81), Xavi, Henry (Gudjohnsen 90), Eto'o, Bojan (Giovanni 72).

I think Chelsea will get lucky against Liverpool and Man Utd to brush past Barcelona to make it a Chelsea/Man Utd final.

I can't see us doing it what with being away in the 2nd leg. Oh well, fingers crossed.

Ferguson Man Utd to go for glory

Ferguson wants Man Utd to go for glory against Barcelona

Sir Alex Ferguson has urged his Manchester United side to write a new chapter in the club's rich history.

United face Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday in the Nou Camp - where they last won the trophy in 1999.

Ferguson said: "They have seen the game many times on video and television, so I don't think it's lost on any of them.

"What is more important is that they can shape their own history. I think they are good enough to do that."

He added: "It is almost 10 years since we won the final. The team of today do not need to worry about the past and be reminded of the past.

"They have seen the game many times on video and television, so I do not think it is lost on any of them.

Cristiano Ronaldo says the quality of the modern-day side can only be gauged at the end of the season.

United are attempting a Premier League and Champions League double, with boss Ferguson claiming his squad is the best he has had at his disposal.

"I also think that this is the most talented team," said winger Ronaldo, 23. "But you can only confirm this at the end of the season, by what was won."

Ronaldo has been in inspirational form for United this season, scoring 38 goals during the campaign.

On the way, he has overtaken George Best's record of 32 goals in a season by a winger at the club, which was set in 1968.

United, who are being pushed by Chelsea in the battle for England's top-flight crown, achieved the Treble in 1999 but Ronaldo has played down making any comparisons with Red Devils teams of yesteryear for the time being.

"There is a lot of talent, I think that we are going along the right path," added Ronaldo.

"Game after game we have shown that we have a fantastic team, with a lot of talent and magnificent players, but at the end of the season we will be able to provide a definite answer if this team is the best Manchester United side of all time.

"If we win the Champions League or the Premier League we will have a better idea."

What an own goal :laugh3:

Oh dear...

I am wearing my city top in Barca tomorrow.. many of the scum have emerged from the swamp over here...and making a great impression of themselves, buy drinking loads of booze, and pissing and vomiting in the streets where people live...

Apart from that, Barca have been generally shitting themselves over Ronaldo ..all week... for example today on Local TV nada about Barca, nada about tonights game it was all focused on Christian Ronaldo.. and a little bit for Wayne Roney and Sir Alex Furgurson... they have talked about nothing else...

One thing though.... they are the underdogs.. they will treat this game like a Derby... I am sure the lot from City that was over at the weekend must have gave them a few tips on how to beat the as over the past 5 years no other team has beaten them more times... !!!
