Cherry Ghost

Featured Replies

Time to introduce you to Cherry Ghost, one of my favourite new bands.

From Channel 4:

UK indie band, Cherry Ghost, based around singer-songwriter Simon Aldred, took their name from a line in the Wilco track "Theologians". Taking their cue from the atmospheric alt-country of Smog, Sparklehorse and the aforementioned Wilco, the band was snapped up my Heavenly Records in the UK. Their debut single, "Mathematics", displayed an affinity with the downbeat anthems of Coldplay, and paved the way for the top 30 follow-up "People Help The People". Their debut full-length, Thirst For Romance, was one of the most eagerly anticipated debuts of 2007.

CHERRY GHOST - Thirst For Romance

Upwardly mobile Mancunians Cherry Ghost are getting all kinds of exposure at the moment thanks to their lighters-aloft single 'People Help The People', and the album amply lives up to that promise, delivering eleven tracks worth of northern indie soul, not a million miles away from Heavenly labelmates Doves. Cherry Ghost meld that kind of anthemic post-Britpop indie with an Americana influence: the title track opens the album with a skiffling swagger that's part The Coral, part Ryan Adams. The next couple of tracks ('4am' and 'Mountain Bird') give alternate vantage points on this sound, before the aforementioned single muscles its way in, and although it's perilously close to a Keane or Coldplay-style crowd-pleaser, they pull it off with a certain amount of emotive credibility. By this point it's absolutely clear that these guys are going to be huge. But what else have they got to offer? Well, 'False Alarm' stretches the parameters of the word 'epic', incorporating a lavish string section into hints of Arcade Fire for some soulful anthemics. If there are any complaints to be made here, it's that the final 20 minutes or so rely very heavily on this kind of orchestral pomp, but fortunately Cherry Ghost do pull it off very well, making sure they have songs to match the scale, plus the robustness of the album's first half stops them from sounding too syrupy. Impressive stuff indeed.

They toured with Polytechnic earlier in the year, and that's how I found out about them. The link for the album is in the downloads section now :)

Should/could be pretty big within a year from now.

Great album, great new artist.

If you like Doves, than you might like to know that Jimi Goodwin plays drums & bass on a couple of the tracks.
