New to Radiohead

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I've had quite a lot of people tell me that I'd like Radiohead, but havn't really got around to listening to some of their stuff.

I'm not sure where to start. Could someone recommend an album or song for me? What of their stuff is similar to Coldplay??

Cheers.

hm. nothing's similar to Colplay in my opinion. i personally love ok computer (i got into them with it) and kid a ... i suggest you starting from the beginning,l that is starting with Pablo Honey. ;) or perhaps you could skip to OK Computer to find better songs than those on PH (though those are not bad).

good luck! :D

Yeah, I agree with Nina, either Pablo Honey or OK Computer....they're good ones to start with...

Start with:

1 - The Bends

2 - Kid A

3 - Ok Computer

4 - In Rainbows

IMO, I would go in this order..(slightly different than david's)

1. The bends

2. Ok Computer

3. Hail to the Thief

4. Kid A

5. In Rainbows

6. Amnesiac

7. Pablo Honey (everyone seems to hate this first album but I like it)

My reasoning is accessibilty (likability to their songs) to their music for people just discovering them not a chronological order. I think Amnesiac is slightly more obscure and shouldn't be a first one to listen to. Even Kid A is kinda there but not as much. In Rainbows is a great album and is very accessible. This one is gonna be a big hit, grammy noms I am sure next year (2009).

i did it like this:

OKC

Amnesiac

PH

then probably The Bends or Kid A, not sure

and HTTT

and then In Rainbows :D

Start with the Bends, and go chronologically. (Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief).

In Rainbows is one of their most direct albums, so you can probably listen to that any time. (And the free download is only for a few more hours) Actually, it's sort of the album that makes all the other albums make sense- it gets all the different styles they've used over the years working together.

Actually, I started with OK Computer and that worked fine. Kid A and Amnesiac might be a little bit harder to get into at first unless you already have a bit of a thing for electronica. Just don't expect to 'get' it all right away. These songs take time.

This is how I did it:

OK Computer

Kid A

Amnesiac

Hail To The Theif

The Bends

Pablo Honey

Here is how you should probably do it:

The Bends

OK Computer

In Rainbows

Kid A

Amnesiac

Hail To The Theif

Pablo Honey

^(almost chronological)

But if you want it for free, download in Rainbows now!! It's almost gone!

Oh yeah....enjoy!! I'm glad you have an interest in Radiohead, I'm sure you'll come to love them and be converted to a freak like us :P just kidding.

Hey,

It's good to see that you want to listen to some Radiohead. I got into them about a year ago. None of there stuff really sounds like coldplay, but you can really see how coldplay were influenced by radiohead.

If I were you I would start off with the Bends. This album is full of awesome rock songs, probably there most "user-friendly" album with songs like Just, The Bends, Fake Plastic Trees, and High and Dry which will make you just love the band.

After that I would move onto OK Computer, probably their most popular album. It contains classics like Karma Police, Paranoid Android, and Let Down. But after you listen to it more you will fall in love with songs like Exit (Music For a Film).

Next I would listen to their newest album In Rainbows and you'll be blown away.

After that I would say listen to Kid A. Now on first listen (heck maybe first 5 listens) it probably won't sound that awesome. Idiotheque will stand out, but just keep listening and pretty soon you will see the beauty that Radiohead make. Songs like How To Dissapear Completely and Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Next I would try Amnesiac, which is closely related to Kid A, but is not as great as a whole like Kid A is. Songs like Pyramid Song, You And Whose Army, and I Might Be Wrong will stand out.

Next I would go Hail To The Theif. Another great album with great songs like 2+2=5, There There, and Go To Sleep.

By this point you should be completely in love with Radiohead and will be able to listen to Pablo Honey. You will see how it is more of a grunge sound then there other stuff, but its still got some great tunes on it.

^I agree....see that was very helpful. listen to him :P

I just copy and pasted the PM I jsut sent him, except I forgot about In Rainbows haha

Oh nice...

yeah it was a little hard to factor in In Rainbows for me because I had obviously listened to it last ....I don't know when people who haven't heard any of the albums should listen to it..

Yeah, I think it should fit in somewhere after OK Computer, I think its a good bridge between OK Computer and Kid A.

Hey Briggins I was bored and I made you (or whoever) a rolly-eye Thom

It's probably too big for an avi but I guess you could save it to your comp and crop it...or make your own on that site...

Mine is not animated, but its still thom.

lol whoa. Thanks guys!

I didn't check this thread for 2 days and I came back to all of this lol.

Wow, yeh. Ill check out as much of it as I can.

I've listened to OK Computer before, and I thought it was quite good - but I can't remember much of it now (it was awhile ago).

The one song I can remember is the one where the video clip is him in some thing with water filling up..."No Surprises" (I just looked it up).

And also vaguely Karma Police.

But Ill check some of it out and get back to y'all!

This thread would have helpep me a lot when I started with Radiohead. But I think I managed to did it well, I started with OK Computer and then The Bends. Then came Kid A, but at the beggining it didn't sound as great as I expected. But at the instant I heared Idioteque I fall in love of the whole record. I think you should hear In Rainbows before Kid A. It was too experimental for me  but now it's tied with OK Computer on the top ;)
