Classic Rock: Style or Time?

Featured Replies

I have this argument with my brother a lot. Is an artist determined under the classic rock genre because of it's style or because of how long its been around. My brother argues that its the style of music. But i disagree. What do you think?

I say time. You can't call a new band a "Classic rock" band. They may be influenced, but they can't be a classic yet.

Time, definitely

ditto; it's definitely time. i can't think of a single band that i know of that's come about in the last 10 years that's been considered "classic rock."

It's definitely time,mainly 60's and 70's and maybe very early 80's.

now you can tell your bro...the people have spoken.

my brother doesn't really care what i have to say. ever.

It is a mixture of both. A band has had to be around for a length of time, but that band has also got to have the style to back up the claims of classic rock.

hard question that one....

initially i guess it was just a style (music), but it has mixed with society and has gone on, and lives its own time...

in my opinion (music) original is always the best, no doubt, but truth is that now i reckon that a lot of classic rock have influenced other bands and are on the base of some styles not only in the sound, but also in the views, lyrics and even visual and conceptual ideas (which end being an influence to people, that is society in general) which leads it to change and at the same time to go on through time.

so as a result now is a bit hard to try to follow all those new sub-genres.. but that is a proof that is has survived through time and evolved, once for good others for not that good.

to sum up, that question have no answer.

With my shallow knowledge of music, I voted time. :P

time definitely. there's this radio station i don't listen to anymore because they play the same songs over and over, and they call the station classic rock. what doesn't make sense is that i've heard songs by green day

time...+ some known hit singles under your belt. but definitely time > style, imo. music in itself does evolve with time, but it's the older music that tends to be classified as "classic anything" genre-wise.

so i do believe that in time, stuff by U2, GNR, Nirvana, Oasis, Radiohead, Coldplay, etc will eventually fall under Classic Rock. some of them already are...like older stuff from the 80s by U2 & GNR, but their new stuff don't fall under that category. & i realise early 90s stuff are also starting to appear on stations that play "classic hits" or "classic rock" music.
