Coldplay Indulges Experimentation On Fourth Album

Coldplay lets its creative flag fly on its fourth studio album, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," due June 17 via Capitol. "We're still obsessed with making songs that can be sung to the rafters," frontman Chris Martin says. "We just wanted to present them differently."

 

To accomplish that goal, the group turned to co-producers Brian Eno and Markus Dravs, who adorn the material with grandiose embellishments the likes of which have never been heard before on a Coldplay album.

 

"Viva La Vida" begins with a strident instrumental, "Life in Technicolor," built as much on an arpeggiated synth foundation as it is on an acoustic guitar melody. The same instrumental is tacked onto the final song, "Death and All His Friends," as a hidden track dubbed "The Escapist."

 

In between, the band frequently breaks from verse-chorus-verse constructions, particularly on "42," which is comprised of three distinct, seemingly unrelated sections. "Yes" shifts from a string- and tabla-driven rocker into a shoegazer-y breakdown, while a funky groove emerges from out of nowhere in the middle of "Death and All His Friends."

 

Elsewhere, Martin and the piano are at the forefront of the shimmering "Reign of Love," while "Cemeteries of London" conjures a foreboding vibe apropos of its title and "Lost!" swells with massive-sounding church organ strains.

 

Drummer Will Champion credits Eno with upending Coldplay's usual working habits in the studio. "Brian has this amazing ability to demystify wonderful music and make it seem very achievable," he says. "We weren't afraid to try anything."

 

Coldplay recorded a number of other songs that did not wind up making the final track list, including "Postcards From Far Away," "Lukas," "Rainy Day," "The Goldrush" and "Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground," but it's unknown if they will be released in some form down the road.

Haha, it's okay, glad you posted it anyway! =) The other new song titles sound intruiging as well, I particularly like 'Postcards from far away'. Maybe this is where the "Postcard" section of the new coldplay website we saw last month comes from?

Hmm, regarding 'Life In Technicolor', i think the article means that it's more of an instrumental song but Chris does sing in it. Something like 'Don't Panic', where there's a long instrumental section in the middle of the song.

 

They then attached the instrumental part into 'Death and All his friends' (think of movie soundtracks, where a new theme for a particular character is made up of older themes combined together). My two cents though

Im sure an instrumental can have a few scattered words flying around.

 

Im confused at the Escapist song, I mean isit Death and...or escapist.

 

Mabye they done it like on Parachutes Life Is For Living.

"Life in Technicolor": Acoustic-guitar driven and jangly, this is one of the few tracks that seems built from the Coldplay template of songs like "Don?t Panic," only a bit more, well, panicked: "Baby it's a violent world," Martin sings.

The hidden song is what they've done before on Parachutes (Life is For LIving) and X&Y /('Til Kingdom Come).

I don't think that it's an instrumental song entirely. It just has very little of Chris singing in it, including the stanza 'Baby it's a violent world'. =)

It probaly be at the start of the concert. Seems to be a good opener. Coldplay have always started with the first title track of the album at concerts with 'Square One' and 'Politik'. But maybe they will surprise us.

For me in the past the opening track has always been one of the strongest and definitive of the album, I hope VLV doesn't break that trend!

Yeah you need an absolute belter to open an album. Im sure VLV will have it.

I really wanna see the artwork right now. Its got to be interesting.

Big news, and seems completely legit. I'm liking the way thing are falling into place.

So we have definitive album name, release date, and tracklist. All that's left album-wise is the artwork and the single info. But I'm happy with this info for the time being. Perhaps Prospekt will speak again later this month??

I'm looking forward to the artwork too, hopefully it'll be intreging and different.

 

But what I really want now is to hear some tracks! Titles, artwork and such mean shit all if the songs aren't there.

I'm just guessing here but I realised that there's a possibility that all the info is being embargoed by the music reviewers (eg. Rollingstone, and Billboard)..so I wouldn't be surprised if we heard track snippets from them as well. And I'm really hoping it'll be over the next 2 days =) but that's just me being overly optimistic..
