And while Violet Hill, the first single from Chris Martin and co, was released as a free download, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is currently receiving more pre-orders than the rest of Play.com's entire top 40 pre-order albums combined. It has also seen 20 per cent more pre-orders than Lewis's Spirit had at the same point. "People talk about the death of the music industry, but this proves that the right title can still break records," said Helen Marquis, Play.com's head of music. "The new album should be the biggest of the year, but with upcoming new albums from the likes of Dido, Amy Winehouse, Take That and Oasis, this is going to be a phenomenal year for British music." She added: "We have not seen an album pre-order to quite these levels before. The previous record holder was Leona Lewis." June 10, 200818 yr Coldplay's Thursday release gamble set to pay off after pre-sales surge COLDPLAY are on course to have the bestselling album of the year, hitting the top spot in this week's album charts just three days after its release. The band put out the digital, CD and vinyl copies of their album Viva La Vida, Or Death And All His Friends on Thursday, rather than the usual Monday and their pre-sales are already bigger than the rest of the acts in the top 40 combined. This proves Chris Martin and the boys were right to take a gamble with "experimental" new material. The pre-sale figures will also come as a blow to The Fratellis, who also launched their new album, Here We Stand, this week. They would have been a dead-cert for the top spot had Coldplay not moved forward their release date. Play.com head of music Helen Marquis confirmed pre-sales for Coldplay were 20 per cent greater than the smash-hit Leona Lewis album Spirit. Fans have been snapping it up at an amazing rate of up to one a minute. Helen said: "People talk about the death of the music industry, but this proves the right title can still break records. By playing Madison Square Garden and Brixton Academy for free, there has also been renewed interest in the band. Now they are streaming their entire album on their MySpace page. "It's all been mounting up. With Coldplay, it's not all about hit singles. "They've never had a No.1 single. Most of their fans are interested in having the whole album." Coldplay have so far outsold their nearest rivals, Glasgow's Fratellis, by a massive six to one and will become the biggest selling artists of the year. But the band may have strong competition after Christmas albums are released by the likes of Take That. June 10, 200818 yr Haha, no matter how "scarring" the critics like to say X&Y was, it sold 10million units and CP are as strong as ever - probably stronger. This record will be MASSIVE. :) And if U2 don't release their record this year but hold off until 2009 then CP have it sewn up lock, stock and two smoking LPs.
