deeterrocks101
Hey guys I was just reading articles on how Viva La Vida fell short of being oasis's record for most sold albums in one week in the UK. well, coldplay sold of 500,000 albums while Oasis sold something like 650,000. However, I'd like to remind the people writing these that this is in the age of free music downloading, where most people now download music for free. Oasis released their album when music downloading didn't even exist. so looking at that fact, coldplay did very well. better than any artist. including Lil Wayne. he SUCKS DICK!!! another thing is that Lil Wayne released his album everywhere on one day and sold 1 million in a week. coldplay released it over a period days. Had coldplay released the album on one day, it would've blown away any album record in history, any album on the charts at the time. That is all. That makes me feel better. :D

winigwl
lil wayne sold like 1,049,000 in the us in the first week and like 1,070,000 worldwide:P
eFlat
Jeeez I never thought of it like that... I wish someone would do some research on this and come up with an estimation on what the real sales figures would have looked like without music pirating :shocked2:Ā Maybe EMI should look into this to help prove they have the biggest band in the world ;)
JPB
^ We all know CP are the biggest band in the world - and the best, naturally. Sales figures only reinforce what we already know ;)

Death Hill
Well, I think Coldplay's album will stand the test of time much better than "Lil Wayne".

TraceOddity
Actually, downloading did exist, but is wasn't as common or as accessible. So yeah, CP are doing great considering how many people probably stole this album with no intention of buying it.:) (I hope everyone who DL'd it here eventually bought it.;))
julissofine
I guess there are still lots of people that will buy an album if the album is worth buying. So the figures also prove that VLV is really worth buying to LOTS of people. :nice:Ā Speaking of buying VLV, I already ordered it for days at this music store but there are no sign of it being available till now.
Open-Politik
no one will beat oasis record in this day and age.but knowing them figures of viva you cant help but smile they did. oasis would never sell as much if they released it now

countingdemons114
i don't much care about their sales, but good for them. i'm way more happy that they got their cred back. it helps a lot when the world can see how damn hard they worked on this one.Ā also, when they're finally independent from emi, that'll be boss

Lennon2217
Oasis > ColdplayĀ Give it up. Coldplay has tried twice now to topple Oasis' first week sales mark. First with X&Y and now with Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. Both fell way short. X&Y had the luxury of coming out on a Monday and still didn't do it. Viva La Vida was released on a Thursday, a la Be Here Now and also came up lame in the race.Ā I think you all forget how massively huge Oasis were and still are in England. They generate so much press coverage and have legions of dedicated followers. They have accomplished all of this without playing the corporate kiss-ass game and being PR trainwrecks yet people still flock to see them and buy their albums. Lennon2217
You can say whatever you want but at the end of the day the record book says OASIS, not coldplay. Lets see Coldplay play Knebworth. More people turned up at Oasis' Manchester gig which was the same day as Live 8 in England and that featured Coldplay, U2, Paul McCartney and Richard Ashcroft.Ā Oasis 'Oct 95 to Oct 97' beats any period of Coldplay popularity. dreamswehad
i dont really like oasis but i have to admit that lennon is right. From 95-97 Oasis was the biggest. Coldplay is having simalir stardum right now but it has not beat Oasis yet. And guys, we have to keep in mind, even though Coldplay new album will sell more than Oasis' new album, Oasis still sell out much larger shows than Coldplay. I will say one thing. COldplay is bigger than Oasis in america anyday, but when it comes to the UK its really an Oasis country.

Li_cold
oasis belongs to uk coldplay belongs to the worldĀ Oh, I liked this statement! :nice: Although I'm not saying Oasis is/isn't bigger than Coldplay
sebrat
we should also bare in mind that Oasis have never had a #1 album in America (even Be Here Now, purportedly their biggest ever, only got to #2) and Coldplay stayed at #1 for 3 weeks with X&Y. Then, Oasis have only had one top ten in America, while Coldplay have had 2 including 1 #1. I think that, as a worldwide phenomenon, Coldplay are bigger. In fact, they're about the biggest rock band since The Beatles IMHO, and unlike Oasis they don't try and emulate them with every song.
Lennon2217
It takes a lot to break America. You really have to work at it and play the PR game. Oasis is not one to do that. They march to their own drum and that cost them Coldplay level success in the USA back in September 1996. Coldplay works extremely hard for their current global success. They have it in them to do that. Liam and Noel can not be bothered to kiss everyones ass for 8 months while promoting an album. Chris is a wonderful PR man. The Gallaghers...not so much but they get the success anyway.Ā Oasis is still very large throughout the world except the US. And yes, Oasis plays massive stadium in the UK and Europe, something Coldplay doesn't do often.Ā Oasis has 8 UK #1 singles to Coldplays 1. If you don't want to count the early ones because of no internet leaks, then since 2000 Oasis still has 4 #1 singles to Coldplay's 1.Ā The only other band I can think of from the UK that puts zero effort into album promotion in the US (not counting tours) is Radiohead.
