Guy included on a list of great bassists

Featured Replies

Hang on, hang on... is this only a list of living bass players? Because for some reason, I don't see John Entwistle on that list. I love Guy and his playing, but any list that doesn't put John Entwistle in the number one spot, or at least top three, isn't a credible list.

Agreed. That list should also include:

Chris Wolstenholme (Muse)

Justin Chancellor (Tool)

Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)

Jack Bruce (Cream)

Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead)

So clearly, with Guy its not a matter of creating the most ridiculous ground thumping face melting bass lines, its about fitting the song like a glove and being consistent. Even since the first album hes found a way to make the bass stand out without taking control of the songs or going astray from the foundation of the music. Guy isn't the most amazing bass player ever, but there's no bassist that helps complete the Coldplay sound better than him.

Completeley agree, couldn't have said it better :)

Oh my goodness! How could you all have forgotten..

STING!

To be able to play/create such basslines and sing as he did....whoa.

And once more, STEVE HARRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS! \m/

They can better remove:

- Tim Commerford

- Paul Gray

- Vince Hornsby

And Add for them:

- Mark King(Level 42)

or

- Duff McKagan(Guns N' Roses)

or

- Michel van Schie(Anouk)

or

- John Entwistle(The Who)

or

- Colin Greenwood(Radiohead)

or

- Sting(The Police)

or

- ME :laugh3::laugh3: (Myself:P)

@coldplayGeorgia!

Easy? You can't probably play bass, or you play the wrong songs!

But have you ever tried to play, Sparks, Bigger Stronger, I Ran Away, Everything's Not Lost, Speed Of Sound, Spies and more with perfect fingering?

Those are not easy!

And the music don't need to be 'easy' to be on that list.

And btw.. I'm sick of people calling Coldplay music easy.. it is'nt easy.

and Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) certainly is in the top 10 weirdest-looking bassists of all time.:freak:

looks like you haven't ever listened to anything else than coldplay

just listen to slayer and some other Metal/Rock bands and you will see what is called hard bass about perfect fingering i already mentioned that i don't offend Guy or something but his bass is definitely not that hard and not unique like other Bass Guitarist on the list so he doesn't deserve to be there ... Thats my opinion you better stick to your opinion and stop complaining about my one

Ofcourse coldplay music is easy ... thats why it is easily understandable

I myself don't play bass i play Electric / Acoustic but My Cousin is in band and is bassist and i perfectly know what is called hard to play bass songs ....

coldplayGeorgia!, You dont want to know how many bands I've heard, famous and not famous.

Well, Slayer.. I hate music that have always to be fast.. like that is 'cool' fast is cool! NOT

When I play fast.. there is no way to put good feeling in fast 'music'.

It is always, fast, fast and faster... BUT hard rock/metal can be slow! Like Metallica does with alot song.. slow! but still metal! And with feeling.

Listen to Master Of Puppets, not much difference in it.. only FAST.. untill a little bit in the end.. what sounds full of feelings! Do you get what I wan't to say?

Fast is'nt always 'cool'.

Coldplay music is slow.. so it is easy? WRONG this sort of music needs alot of feelings, how more feelings, how better it sounds.

I can't play 20 Coldplay songs after eachother, I'm completely empty after it.. all feelings are gone then.

BUT when I play Slayer music.. after one song I'm tired! Because there is no way for feelings in it and it is fast.

first of all i never said that i like Slayer or any of the Metal Bands i just said that to Compare Coldplays music to them Coldplay is like playing on the table with the hands you know why ? Yes u are right coldplays music is much more easy to play because it is slow

thats what i wanted to say only thing i am pretending on is that coldplays songs are easy to play i don't mean that itself meaning of the songs and feelings are easy ofcourse they are complicated but not because of Many Instruments and hard to play riffs or something but just because lirycs are awesome and music is harmonical

if you are bass player yourself you will understand that Slow Songs (like coldplay) are much more easy to play than Death Metall and other kinds of Rock/Metall

about Slayer and Other crap (no offense though) they are neither beautifull nor harmonical or easily understandable you might listen to it and you might not get anything of the song you might stay without emotion.. but everyone should admit that the Style which coldplay plays is easy to play all the instruments !

No you're wrong.

You say.. slow..okay.. slow it is easy!

NO because it is slow, it is not always easy.

If I can play very fast.. then is slayer easy.. but coldplay song can then be very, very hard for me.

I never meant that you like slayer, I only want to say that it isnt harder to play then Coldplay.

And I'm, bassplayer, one of the hardest thinks to play, know that Coldplay is NOT easyer then Metallica music, I learn playing Metallica faster then songs from Coldplay.

Started with a song of Coldplay, weeks later with Master Of Puppets, and When I was playing Master Of Puppets perfect, the Coldplay song, Spies, was far from perfect.

No you're wrong.

do you walk with hands ? Really i wonder how is it possible that SLOW songs are hard to play on bass guitar and very fast ones are easy omg never seen such a nonsense i already told you i have my cousing bassist himself and he told me that ofcourse when the speed is MUCH faster it is ofcourse harder to play

and there is no need of example of my cousin ofcourse i play Guitar myself and forsure faster songs are much more hard to play than Coldplay

i don't know whats wrong with you

Sorry for a bit harsh post but it is annoying to hear such a nonsense

No you're wrong.

NO because it is slow, it is not always easy.

.

maybe not always but at least 90%

So... um...

Les Claypool absolutely belongs at the top of this list. I'm disappointed that Chris Squire (of Yes) is missing, though - he made the bass a lead instrument in many of the band's songs, just like Claypool did. And he invented a completely new sound for the bass. Just listen to "Roundabout" or "Heart Of The Sunrise".

And yeah, where's Entwistle?

As for Guy's basslines, "Clocks" and "Violet Hill" are the standouts for me. I do feel like he just blends in with the songs though, as opposed to having any in-your-face, noteworthy parts.

No Offense To Guy but i don't think that his bass riffs are hard ! so i don't think that he should be in their while on the list are various Bass Players Like Michael "Flea" Balzary etc...

so the thing that coldplay is so popular doesn't mean that Guy should be in top 10 of greatest bassist ... its my opinion

and Itself the music of coldplay is easily playable and it is what makes it so good to listen.

i agree with you.

THAT LIST IS A JOKE!

The Hardest Part has a cool bass line, and Sparks has such a nice bass too.

Mani of the Stone Roses and now Primal Scream is an incredible bassist. Id add him to any list. And of course, Peter Hook (new order and Joy Division).

Have you heard Peter Hook's other band Monaco? They've got a song called What Do You Want From Me, and it has one of the best bass lines ever! He play bass as if it's lead guitar, very melodic. Some dodgy lyrics though lol.

Ive not listened to Monaco in ages - but that also reminds me I've seen Hooky play live :) I cant believe I forgot I saw Monaco. The video for that with Hooky playing bass in the beginning is sweet!

There is one thing that I would die for

It's the music, my life is in your hands

Cause when you're near me, your love is all I need

Now I can't imagine

What do you want from me?

It's not how it used to be

You've taken my life away

Ruining everything
