Fixed
Does anybody know what the instrument is that plays underneath the main beat? It fills in the space left by where the hi-hats would be, in between the bass drum and the snare/handclaps.

Tnspieler1012
^that's true live, but apparently there's an eastern instrument on the album version, forgot what it's called, but in approx. two hours some one who knows will come in and post. QuestionsOfScience
Does anyone have drum tabs or a drum instrumental of the song? I REALLY want to learn it, and I can't.
PianoRocker
Sounds like a Djembe or Bongos. By the way, just was listening to the song(Lost!), did anyone also heard the mistake at 2:23? Or is it just the one on my cd? :uhoh:
QuestionsOfScience
Omg!!! I never noticed that! Lol, that just goes to show that even Will Champion Can Make Mistakes!!!!
bearcat1229
I am not a drummer so I may be wrong, but does anyone else think that there are some drum loops used live on some of the percussion-heavy tracks? Just seems like at times there is way too much going on for one person to play themself. This doesn't make me look down on Will or them any, but just a curious observation. ediskrad73
Lol Will is making no mistake, it's the piano. I don't think it's backtracked. it is. R42 mentioned adding more "hip hop loops" to the sound when JayZ began to make appearances on stage to perform Lost+ "There's also talk that Jay-Z will be up to do his bit in Lost tonight, so I'm busy under the stage fiddling about extending Will's Hip-Hop drum loops in the middle section." ediskrad73
But did he meant actual loops or things Will plays over and over by him self? i would assume actual loops because he wouldnt need to program anything if he was playing it
bearcat1229
yeah ... Will is a great drummer and musician but there is just too much going on in that song to not have some sounds looped. Someone had a pic that had a few foot pedals by his feet. Perhaps he triggers and tempos his own loops? I know he has been more into drum machines and such in the recent past. PianoRocker
Maybe he is looping himself? Or a delay effect from the drummics.
princesanji
there is no way it's not backtracked. think of guy, playing the drums firstly, then he plays the bass, but his drumming doesn't stop - i assume they use loopers (like the boss rc-2 for example)
Fixed
Does anybody know what the instrument is that plays underneath the main beat? It fills in the space left by where the hi-hats would be, in between the bass drum and the snare/handclaps. To answer my own question, I've since found out that it's a bhangra dhol. I'm pretty sure that the drum track is played over the PA at concerts. On top of that, for the first two verses, Guy plays a bass drum, and Will plays his medium tom. Guy's playing a different pattern to the original bass pattern, so the combination of Will's tom, Guy's bass drum, and the original programmed beat means that the overall drum sound you hear at concerts isn't exactly the same as you hear on CD. For the third verse Will plays the beat on his snare, bass drum and hi-hats, but the programmed hip-hop beat carries on over the PA, so you still get that handclap sound and the bhangra dhol. I'm guessing Guy plays the bass drum because I don't think the bass guitar comes in until verse 3, so playing the drum gives him something to do until then, and also because it looks cool. Yes, most is correct but not about Guy's bassdrum. I've listen and seen the song alot these days and paid alot attention to the drums. Until verse 3 Will plays the song on mid and low tom and snare. After that hi-hats, ride, bass and snare. Guy plays the bass drum not to look cool or something, he realy is playing it. I've heard in some versions mistakes etc. in Guy's drumming. And when he stops the bassdrum is losing alot in volume. When a instrument is not played the mic is turned off. However they 'forget' it sometimes. So when Chris throws a bassdrumstick in the crowd after hitting the bassdrum you can't hear it mostly. But some versions I've heard the bassdrum clearly.. mic still on.. Like the strings and keys and other stuff in Viva la Vida, Lovers in Japan and other songs on the blue keyboards. People keep saying it's backtracked. But if you listen closely you can hear the dynamics and mistakes.. so it is live. When they both stopped playing the keyboard a looping is enabled on the keyboard or software... And for the things that are backtracked.. who cares? Do you wan't them to play 10 instruments at one time? Yes? Try it yourself! ;)
