July 17, 200818 yr Is coldplay the best rock band of this decade? Arguably, it's tough entering band's like radiohead into the equation since their most famous work was done in the late 90s. I've had arguments with my bro about the nineties and he always emphasizes influence and impact on the music world. In terms of the 00's Coldplay had certainly been one of/if not the...biggest band/s around. They have also been one the best quality bands to enjoy that kind of popularity and success. So while they would easly have been drowned out nirvana/radiohead/oasis in the 90s, in terms of this decade it's certainly possible. Musically speaking, the question is almost relative, but when i comes to a vh1 countdown in the next decade...Chris and the boy's certainly have a chance. What Other Bands have been good this decade? Oh jeez...radiohead, and u2 continue to be amazing with age. Personally speaking I'm partial to the strokes, the killers and sigur ros. Has coldplay changed music in this decade? While still very young, they started at the very beginning of the decade, and after churning up four award winning and immensely successful albums, I think they've aged to the point that they're showing up the influence list of most upcoming bands nowadays. Have they surpassed the bands that influenced them such as u2 and radiohead and a-ha? No, they have a lifetime of success to catch up with and we'll have to wait until the next decade for critics to concede that coldplay are a prominent and impacting force in music history. I still have doubts that Coldplay will ever reach u2 status by the end of their career, though.

July 17, 200818 yr I think john meyer shouldnt be included becoz hes just a single artist and i dont like his songs anyway.....and hes not global as coldplay is.. 1- yes , obviously look at their album sales duh? 32 mil on 3 albums 2- the killers(yeah! going there....), thats the only band i think thats qualified for me 3- yes , theyve influenced so many musicians and bands that are coming up these days today 4- theyve definitely surpassed radiohead, (duh?), U2 are legends and coldplay is still climbing to their rank.... and aha i dont know them

July 17, 200818 yr 1: No. They're the best pop band this decade. They're not rock; thinking so shows you have a very narrow understanding of music. If you include bands that aren't rock bands, Death Cab for Cutie still beat them. And if you don't, Mayday Parade or Jimmy Eat World win. 2: See above. Also see: Switchfoot, Bloc Party, Dashboard Confessional, Interpol, Snow Patrol. 3: Definitely. See the fact that they were nominated for a mercury award for Parachutes, and that now everybody thinks the album is safe. The point is that it wasn't close to safe or easy at the time, it just became such a popular style of music that looking back on it it seems that way. 4: They've always been better than U2, they'll always be struggling with Radiohead (because the very fact that they're influenced by them and that Radiohead are such a trailblazing band means they'll always be half copying where they see Yorke's gang as an influence) and A-ha are shit.

Death Cab formed in 1997 and if you check out Gibbard's older stuff you'll see that the skeleton of their sound was already there. They're one of the most untouched (and untouchable) bands in the world. You have a point with Snow Patrol's 'Eyes Open' but 'Final Straw' was incredibly unique. And yes, Keane are just a copy. You also say they will never pass U2, but are 'the best rock band ever'. Are U2 not a rock band?

U2 - No, perhaps in 10-15 years time. Radiohead - Commerically but not musically. A-ha - not sure as im not that familiar with them

No band has reached more people and countries and been as succesful in this decade than Coldplay. Certainly critics wouldn't vote them the best, but I don't think you can deny what they've done. What Other Bands have been good this decade? There's tons of bands that have been great. U2, Radiohead, Keane, Snow Patrol and many others. Has coldplay changed music in ths decade? There's no doubt that so many bands have either tried the Coldplay sound or are at least in someway influenced by it. Even if they aren't, more people are apt to listen to some similar bands due to Coldplay's influence on them. Seriously, would bands like The Fray have so many top 100 singles without Coldplay...I think not. Have they surpassed the bands that influenced them such as u2 and radiohead and a-ha? I'm not sure this is really a great question. The word choice of "surpass" doesn't seem that logical. I think with great bands like the one's you named the best thing is to be mentioned in there company, and for people to not be like, "wait what?????". And I think Coldplay has accomplished that with flying colors. They're dominating an era of music. When people look back Coldplay will define the new millenium sound.
