Is this the end of cheap clothes era? Price of cotton has rocketed because of floods, Primark warns

The era of cheap clothes - the £2 T-shirt and £4 pair of jeans - is under threat following a surge in the price of cotton to a 15 year high.

Floods in two of the world's major producers, Pakistan and China, have severely hit crops, putting up wholesale prices.

Budget clothing chain Primark today joined other retailers in warning about the impact on both higher cotton prices and other costs.

Under threat: Primark today joined other retailers in warning about the impact of Pakistan and China flooding both of higher cotton prices and other costs

The firm also made clear the Government's deicision to increase in VAT to 20per cent in January will also push up the price of fashions.

Primark has built its success by undercutting established rivals with cheap throwaway fashions, including the £2 T-shirt and £4 pair of jeans for men.

However, it seems it will be impossible to repeat these deals when higher wholesale prices feed through to the high street early next year.

Just last month, Next, warned that prices may rise by 8per cent next year due to higher costs, including cotton, and January’s VAT hike.

The jeans maker Levi Strauss and Hanebrand, which owns the Wonderbra brand, have warned of higher prices, while the budget fashion chain H&M has also raised the alarm over rising raw material costs.

Primark said its growth in sales slowed in the last three months to four per cent, which was half the level seen at the beginning of the year.

Looking ahead the firm said that higher cost of cotton would hit its profit margins.

The company is part of Associated British Foods, which is responsible for household name food brands such as Kingsmill bread, Silver Spoon sugar, Mazola vegetable oil, Ovaltine drinks and Twining teas.

Flooding disasters in North Eastern China and Pakistan have pushed the price of cotton to rocket up in recent weeks by more than 700 per cent.

Floods have destroyed over 4.25 million acres, affecting an estimated 25per cent of the cotton crop.

In one month, the wholesale price of one pound of cotton has increased from $0.1 to $0.83, which is its highest level for 15 years.

Allen Terhaar, executive director of Cotton Council International, said: 'Cotton is 15-20per cent of the textile component of what people are wearing.

'Consumption worldwide is now exceeding production and prices are going up'.

Industry analysts suggest a T-shirt that currently sells for £7.99 would have to go up by £1, while a £50 pair of jeans could rise by as much as £5.

Wang Yong, an analyst at China's Hongyuan Futures exchange in Beijing, said: 'Shrinking inventories and this year's adverse weather are the main reasons behind the supply shortage.'

Higher cotton prices are expected to see retailers and manufacturers looking to switch to using more man-made fibres.

Love the coat, good choice.

What color shoes go with pants like these? And I also have another pair of light blue chinos that are a bit lighter. But I'm not sure what color shoes besides white go with blue. Brown?

I`d go for a lighter tan, or more , as shown, an "eggshell" colour.

I know you are in Tampa, Nick, but it`s getting a tad past the Labor Day rule, ya know. ;) jmho.

I thought it was just the white that shouldn't be worn after Labor Day?!

:P true that. Even though people even really use that rule anymore- but it just seems out of place to wear such light clothes with all the autumn colours all around. But as i said, "jmho" :)

I just feel like showing you all my favorite shoes and stockings.
