Juventus Torino is back in the Champions League! I could puke right now! This club must be banned forever from any European football matches! :dozey:

BATE Borisov is qualified for the Champions League as well haha. It's a club from Belarus. :)

Liverpool 1-0 S Liege (1-0 agg)

Torres (left) struggled to find a way through the Liege defence

Liverpool scraped into the group stages of the Champions League courtesy of a 117th minute goal from Dirk Kuyt against a valiant Standard Liege.

Kuyt sidefooted home at the far post to end a tortuous night for the Reds.

They survived two early scares when keeper Pepe Reina produced superb saves in palming away strikes from Dieudonne Mbokani and Marouane Fellaini.

Liverpool were denied a penalty in extra-time when Oguchi Onyewu brought down Nabil El Zhar before Kuyt's goal.

The result and timing of the goal was harsh on the Belgian champions, who had proved stubborn opponents for Liverpool.

The Reds had been fortunate to leave Liege with a goalless draw in the first leg and were expected show an improvement on home territory.

But the visitors had other ideas as they were inspired rather than overwhelmed by the occasion and quickly caused the Anfield side problems.

Mbokani left fly from 22 yards and Reina, who saved a penalty in Belgium, had to smartly dive low to his right to turn the ball around his post.

The chance added to Liverpool's nerves and, after Robbie Keane poorly shot over, Liege continued to increase the sense of anxiety around Anfield.

Igor De Camargo missed a cross with an attempted shot but recovered to put the ball back in for Fellaini, whose steered volley was palmed away by Reina.

The Spanish keeper was again proving Liverpool's saviour and, despite Xabi Alonso curling an effort wide for the Reds, the pressure and pace of Liege had the home team looking shaky.

And the epitomy of confidence sweeping through the visitors was signalled when Marcos Camozzato angled a ambitious 35-yard half-volley wide.

Liverpool's lack of width was being exposed by the Begian champions, who comfortably closed out the home side's attempted attacks through the middle. When the Reds did have a sight on goal from a corner, Kuyt headed a far post header disappointingly wide just before the interval.

Liege sat back after the break and held Liverpool at bay as they hoped to catch the Merseysiders out on the counter-attack.

The game became a more cagey affair as the Reds continued to struggle to find a way through their resolute opponents.

Liverpool were then left breathing a sigh of relief when De Camargo sent a diving header just wide before the end of 90 minutes.

In extra-time, Alvaro Arbeloa had an audacious long range half-volley saved by keeper Rorys Aragon before Onyewu survived giving away a spot-kick.

Kuyt then struck as penalties loomed for a goal on his 100th appearance for the club to put them into Thursday's group stage draw.

Wow. Seems like it'll be a very interesting year.

Werder Bremen against Internationale, Panathinaikos and Famagusta... It could be a lot worse I'd say! :D This time we have a great chance to reach the next round.

The strongest groups for me are group D and H.

Oh, and I'm glad that Atlético bashed Schalke 4:0 last night!

LOL at Group D. Torres back to see his old friends.....:laugh3:

Man Utd 1-2 Zenit St Petersburg

Manchester United's bid for European Super Cup glory ended in failure as Pavel Pogrebnyak and Danny goals earned Zenit St Petersburg a deserved win.

Fresher and more incisive throughout, Zenit took the lead when Pogrebnyak forced home a header from close range.

Playmaker Danny made it 2-0 with a fine solo goal on the hour, before Nemanja Vidic pulled one back from six yards.

It was too little too late, though, with Paul Scholes sent off late on in a lacklustre showing from United.

The midfielder saw red when he punched the ball into the net with only seconds left on the clock, earning himself a second booking and one-match European suspension that could see him sit out the Champions League group match against Villarreal.

It was a sorry end to the match for United, who had looked off the pace throughout.

that was nice game:D I hope they can win Juventus and Real Madrid:laugh3:

Interesting to see Cluj do so well. I felt bad for Bordeaux. They seemed so slow and lackluster tonight....

Onward to tomorrow!

Yeah, not a huge shocker that Barca won, but they've been so bad lately that it's nice to see them win again. :nice: Can't say I'm a huge Barca fan, but I have a soft spot for Leo Messi and Bojan Krkic. And of course, despite the circumstances, I still love Henry. :P

I'm crossing my fingers that Valencia do well this season and qualify for CL next year. :D

Anyone know if Ronny is coming back against Villareal tomorrow? Heard some rumors, but you know how the press is....

Ahem and I would like to add Pep Guardiola to that list too.. Ahh, he's so HOT! :wideeyed:

Him and Messi are definitely my faves to look at. :nice:

Though seriously, I love the whole team! They've got some really fantastic players; Xavi, Iniesta, Henry, Puyol, Gudjonsson.. lovely.

PEP! He's quite a change from Frank last year.

Xavi and Iniesta! Spanish heroes. :nice: They are awesome. Oh, and Eto'o is amazing as well! Though he does get injured often...

I'm still bitter about Alex Hleb, so I won't comment on him.

Valencia is my #1 La Liga team though. :D Vicente and Morientes are ace! And don't forget Villa...

Stevie Gs goal was FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is why he is 100 times better than Lampard, but I must admit Lamps played good yesterday too. Well done! But I still dont get why they cant play together. I mean do you really have to have a defensive midfielder playing all the time???

Ronaldo will be on the bench today.

Man Utd v Villarreal

Uefa Champions League, Group E - Man Utd v Villarreal

Venue: Old Trafford Date: Wednesday, 17 September Kick-off: 1945 BST Coverage: BBC Sport website & BBC Radio Five Live

Winger Cristiano Ronaldo will start on the substitutes bench for Manchester United's opening Champions League match against Villarreal at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo, sidelined for two months after undergoing an ankle operation in July, was expected to be out until October.

Michael Carrick (broken foot) is out and Dimitar Berbatov (knee) is a major doubt, while Paul Scholes is suspended.

Villarreal are without Nihat Kahveci and former United striker Giuseppe Rossi, who both have thigh problems.

Carrick, meanwhile, was injured during United's 2-1 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday.

The 28-year-old left Anfield on crutches and, although Ferguson initially felt the damage was not too bad, scans have revealed a small break.

Carrick will be out for at least a month, ruling him out of England's next two World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus, plus up to nine matches for United.

Berbatov required treatment for a knee problem during the Liverpool game and missed the start of training on Thursday.

If Berbatov is missing, United should have Angolan forward Manucho available.

The 25-year-old has recovered from a broken metatarsal and, with his work permit also secure, is now looking to break into the first-team picture.

Manchester United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Foster, Brown, Neville, R Da Silva, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, O'Shea, Evra, F Da Silva, Ronaldo, Nani, Hargreaves, Anderson, Possebon, Fletcher, Park, Giggs, Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov, Manucho, Welbeck.
