Yes this is true....I think becoming friends first is better than a date....a date is so constrained...you actually can't act normally becuase you always have at the back of your mind: " Oh this is a date, this is your potential partner."

Exactly! It makes me dead nervous and I hate awkward moments of silence when neither of you knows what to say. Then again, I'm probably just not very good at making conversation with people I barely know.
