LIFE AS WE KNEW IT

part two

The days passed, the news reports filled with excited scientists, raving :dance: about the comet. Jonny and Will were just as anxious as the experts, planning a huge party on the night of the collision. Guy had suggested playing a few songs, and Jon was urging Chris to try out his new song for the event.

“I told you it’s not any better than it was before,” Chris finished off the last chord of the song.

Will sighed, leaning on the piano. “You know…the more I hear it…the more it kinda grows on me.”

“Really?” Chris sat up straight. “You…you like it?”

“Yeah…yeah I do!”

“Great!” Jonny laughed, grabbing his guitar. “You think we could add the new riff to it?”

“That would sound bloody brilliant, wouldn’t it?” Guy added.

Will nodded. “Let’s hear it together.”

So Jonny played with Chris, adding his own flare to the song. The music seemed to flow naturally from their instruments, although they’d never played it together. Guy applauded enthusiastically when they ended. “That was great!”

“Wonderful,” Will smiled. “I say we’re done for the day.”

Everyone packed up, Jon and Chris the last out as usual. “Hey, uh, Jon?” Chris jogged to catch up.

“Yeah, Chris?”

“This comet thing tomorrow…you don’t think anything bad’s gonna happen, do you?”

Jonny laughed. “Chris, you worry too much.”

“I can’t help it…”

“Everything will be fine. Trust me.”

Jonny’s smile gave Chris the feeling that he was right. “Okay.”

Chris laughed as Jonny cracked another corny joke. He was sitting at a table with a bunch of his friends, letting himself indulge in a beer. Guy was on his fourth drink and flirting with a brunette by the bar, Will chatting with some of his buddies nearby. The party was great, Chris loving every minute of it.

The bartender cranked up the radio, everyone quieting to listen to details about the comet. It was expected to hit soon.

“Wanna play?” Jon tapped Chris on the shoulder.

“Sure. Which song?”

“The new one.”

Chris frowned. “A duet?”

“Well, yeah,” Jon swung his guitar into place and got onto the stage.

“Okay…” Chris took a seat on the stool by the piano, playing a couple of chords. The room grew quieter, waiting for something to happen.

They began playing, the song sounding even better than when they had practiced it. The crowd applauded, and Chris sighed. This was definitely going on the new album.

“It’s about to make impact!” The bartender called, rushing out the door to get a better glimpse.

Chris followed Jonny to the porch of the bar, gazing up at the moon. A bright streak of light could be seen towards the east. The comet’s glow shattered the dark night, a loud bang erupting from the sky as it crashed into the surface of the moon. Jonny hugged Chris, laughing.

Shards of rock flew into space. Chris cocked his eyebrow. Something wasn’t right. The moon seemed to be growing bigger.

“Jon, get inside!”

“What?”

“C’mon!” Chris tugged on Jonny’s sleeve, pulling him into the bar. “The moon’s moving towards earth!”

Jon ran to the window. “Holy shit!”

Guy and Will ran inside. “Do you see that?!” Guy hid under a table. “Do you bloody see that?!”

“We see it!” Will began trying to drag him out from his hiding spot.

“Look!” Jon pressed his face to the window. “It’s stopped!”

The boys gathered around to take a look. The moon had, in fact, stopped moving…but now it was extremely close to earth, seeming to take up half of the sky Chris saw.

“I’ve gotta get home,” Will rushed outside, obviously worried about Marianne.

“You mind me staying with you?” Jonny glanced at Chris.

“Sure.” Chris grinned.

Guy stumbled as he opened the door. “I’ll see you guys in the morning.”

Jonny rolled his eyes. “I think Mr. Flirtatious needs some assistance.”

“You can come to my place, too,” Chris laughed.

“Cool! Party!”

Jon and Chris smiled at each other as they helped Guy down the street.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was weird how it looked. That same moon Chris had once gazed at, then a small object in the distance, now something large and unavoidable to look at. He sighed as he got up from the bench by his window, grabbing a blanket and laying down on the couch. He’d let Jon use his bed, and Guy was sound asleep on the floor…where he’d passed out an hour ago.
Chris told himself not to worry, that everything would be fine…just like Jonny had told him.
