Keyboard Learning Topic

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I thougt I'd start a topic where people can ask questions, who need a bit help while learning to play the keyboard/piano...

---

Okay, my first question... I was learning the C and G chord today. I have no problem playing the C chord. With the G chord I was wondering, if it's a problem when I am playing it with other fingers than the book is saying. Book is saying use fingers 1, 3 and 5. But I prefer fingers 1, 2 and 5. Could this be a problem later, when I am playing the G chord different, or doesn't that matter which fingers I'm using?

i'm not a professional keyboard player, i learned everything by myself, and i would say that it's not a major problem. just play what's more comfortable for you. You may stumble across a lottle problem in the future when learning a song or so, where it's hard to go from one chord to another or so, but that's something that a little bit of practice will solve it.

but if any professional players think i'm giving the wrong advice, please stop me then. but I just play what's most comfortable since I never even learned from a book.

Since they're both the same shape, I don't see why a G chord should be any more difficult than a C chord. If you want to one day learn to play intermediate to advanced pieces than it is important to learn proper fingering early, even though it can be annoying. It won't kill you switch around a couple fingers now and then, but try to comply with the book whenever you can.

Okay, thank you both! That was helpful.

I guess I will see what the next practices will bring... If I feel the urge to change fingers again, or not... I just wanted to make sure, it will be no huuuge mistake.

And @doritji: It doesn't matter if you're a proffesional keyboard player, or not. Every advice is helpful :smart:

Better yet, why not, (and i know this may seem impossible to you - i would urge you to think otherwise), put up a file with what you have so far, so that some of us may give an educated opinion. As it is, I am kind of understanding you but would like to hear what you are talking about, and the solution could be quite simple.

glad to help, as i know there are several others in here, let us hear...

when i try to songwrite i always do this.

Example lyrics and melody.

I ate a cheese bur ger

chords a a a a a b

It was great

Chords b b b

it ends up sounding like im rapping. so i need help with that

I will answer this question (i try to avoid reading music, and one of the benefits is not having to remember clefs, mixolydian scales and other such things) :) No really - look at the wikipedia on clef

Anyway, it sounds like you are not separating the chord from the melody line. SUPPOSED TO BE DIFFERENT. would sound terrible otherwise.

The melody should have a definite main note that is complimentary to the chord. But the creativity comes with how you get there.

I will use the masters for an example. "parachutes"

in a haze a stormy haze

there are only 2 chords here, but a note for each syllable.

the chords are B and Ab minor

the "main" notes are B and Bb

the "main" melody notes (that "match" the chords) are "in a haze" and "my haze"

the rest of it is the creativity of the writing.

Now sing it, or just imagine it, with no picking of the guitar, just strummed chords, and Chris singing "in a haze a" all with the one "main" note, and "stormy haze" all in the other "main" note.

So what Chris did was added the C# at "stor"

This is a simple example of (i think) what you are trying to accomplish to sound "rappy".

Also what could work would be the same thing but at "stormy" he could have done "stor" with the same C# and then done "my" with Eb.

At the end of the day there are 10,000 ways to do the same thing.

And no I don't buy that Chris Martin, one of the greatest songwriters of our time, stole from Joe Satriani. (for the record)

im sixteen i really want to song write. I think music is the best way the channel your thoughts, fears, strengths, and such over poetry, books, and other art forms. I want to also record, not to put it up on a website and expose it (although there is not a reason why i wouldn't do that in the future) but to look back at the song and recall what was going through my head at that time.

thanks anyways,

also if you song write, it would be cool if you upload a sheet of your music.

thanks again

i appreciate everything you said here, but I would urge you, (as a previous "keep it more to myself" 16 year old), I am not suggesting you put up a youtube site or anything for that kind of "sharing". I am rather suggesting emailing me an mp3, at petermichaelw (at) ptd (dot) net for just an opinion.

trust me when i say, now at 16 is time to do more learning, be it guitar, keyboard, theory, software, or whatever. pay the dues now. because then you can really express yourself. i was the same way with software, not wanting to learn the sequencer fully, "just enough to go now". and i kept my creativity to myself, not avoiding people with it, just not sharing it with anyone. oh to go back in time.

you really want to be able to press record, and fluidly EXPRESS yourself onto the canvas.

just my .02

Dirt cheap microphone, plug it into your computer, position it nicely around your piano/guitar, select 'Microphone' in Audacity and hit record. Extremely fast, cheap and easy way of recording yourself with pretty good results.
