He really adds some of the background ambient kind of effects, but also uses instruments like Ebow, and other foot pedals/sequencer type things. (If you want to get a clearer picture, take a look at their From the Basement peformance on youtube, it really shows what each member does quite well cause you can see everyone clearly rather than fan shot video @ a concert). As for Phil (drummer), it's actually a joke on atease about the purple shirt. People joke that Phil is poor and cannot afford any other shirt... lol.
