i've been badgering people, both official and unofficial, for this for years! i've never gotten a reply, of course, but i bet people have seen me banging on about it in countless other threads :P

coldplay NEEDS an official fan club. i'm not so familiar with the convention end of it all, but i do have some familiarity with official band fan clubs and all the benefits for both the fans and the band. the best, most functional fan clubs charge an initial joining fee and then an annual renewal charge which keeps the club in business, and i'm 100% positive that a coldplay club would have THOUSANDS of members. of course, the initial fee is usually high enough to deter just the casual fans and keeps the benefits for the people that would really use them, but i think most people on this site would be willing to pay $50 or so once and then $20 or so each year after that. to me, the main point of a fan club is for tickets, and in my experience, bands tend to set aside a certain number of tickets per show for fan club members only and sell them through their site before the rest of the tickets go onsale (and often, these tickets are in good locations for decent prices). and then there are the other possible benefits of being a member, such as exclusive newsletters or christmas presents or special merchandise. coldplay would make a killing if they had an official fan club, though i don't think anything is going to happen in that field until if and when they get off of EMI.

my mom routinely tells me to drop out of uni and go start a fanclub good enough so that coldplay would want to buy it and make it official (she's actually only half-kidding :P). she's been a member of the pearl jam fan club for many years, and that's how their fan club started: two diehard fans in a home office. the band took notice and bought the rights for it (but kept the original guys running it ), and the rest is history. i'd KILL to do something like that...my mom claims she could even get me in touch with the two PJ guys

i say keep dreaming! :D

but for the near future, i think the 100+ coldplayer meetup at wembley is as good as we're going to get.

Chelsea you SHOULD start one!!! :D im really suprised something like this already doesnt exist!! If anything i know us coldplayers would be willing to get one started....

hope this doesnt sound stupid but how does EMI control things like fanclubs too, if COldplay did do something like that? couldnt we just get in contact with Debs or someone who could present it to the boys and see if they would approve..........i dont know much about starting these things but i know i would def. be in if there was one!!! :D:D:D

If i'm not mistaken, official fanclubs are linked to the band's record label as they get them stuff like memmorabilia, tickets or even meet & greets.... the link is with them, not the band or anyone directly involved with them..... i think

I agree that Coldplay needs an official fan club. Besides the obvious benefits that you mentioned that is a part of being a member of the fan club, it is also very beneficial to the band because it allows them to keep in touch with their fans, though they do a pretty good job with that now.

The thing with conventions is that they are held every year even when the band is not on tour. Fans all around gather to mingle and have fun. Conventions even allow folks who do not post on forums to come and socialize with other fans in a fun atmosphere because there are people who would rather join fan clubs and not post in forums.

I am willing to start one up since I do know some things about fan clubs and conventions.

haha, i'd KILL to start one, liz, but i'm so young :P. i have experience with management and organization, but not with the financial or legal ends of things or anything to do with business...i'd have a lot to learn, though it is tempting to contact the guys that started the pearl jam fan club for some pointers . i know i'd have a great employee pool just from this site alone! :D

if we/i ever do put something together and by some wild stroke of luck the bands' people become interested, i figure i'll turn up on their doorstep all enthusiastic with my big smile and they'll be like ":freak: YOU LOOK LIKE YOU'RE 12 YEARS OLD!" and i'll be like "i'm actually 20..." and then they'll slam the door in my face :P

i don't know the technicalities of their contract, but there very well may be something in there about organizations, such as fan clubs, that EMI doesn't own. i'm sure they covered all bases when they signed them and said something like "we need a cut of the profit from anything you do," and that makes me nervous because therefore it might be EMI's decision whether or not to allow a fanclub rather than the band's and their direct management. i don't trust EMI :P

Sometimes, if you believe your daydream has happened, and feel now how good it makes you feel, then the universe somehow brings it all together to make it happen for you. Happened to me when I met Jonny and Guy. :D But you have to do your part too. Nothing's impossible.

Yep, I remember wishing really bad that Coldplay came to my town soon, and now is happening, and I'm going!

Now I'm daydreaming about going to the West Palm Beach concert, and make it a field day to see if we can get to meet them or get an upgrade

There are like 20 of us meeting at the Tampa concert, probably early in the day outside the venue

Well, this sounds weird but a few years ago I talked to someone in Dick Clark's office about an event which coincide with the convention. I still have a contact with this person in Dick Clark's business office. Anyway, I can give them a call to see if they know how official fan clubs are formed and what one needs to do. I know that sounds weird but Dick Clark and his people have contacts with everyone in the music business and I am sure they can provide insights to all things dealing with fan clubs.

BTW...do you all know who Dick Clark is?

hahah i am only 19 and i would totally work for u if you did start one Chelsea :P:P i can just imagine telling my parents what i have decided to do with my degree....."work for the Coldplay fanclub....."

i see now tho.............i dont trust EMI either :shifty:

if the boys were away from them i could totally see them supporting something like this........they love their fans.......:D :D i could see them all loving this idea :wacky:

ya i know who Dick Clark this!!! :D

Tracy you seem to have a few hook ups!!! you should look into it............

ooh yes, dick clark, definitely know who he is!

i'm just not optimistic about anything happening while coldplay's still on EMI. i'll bet that EMI controls way more than we think they do (i think they're the reason behind all of coldplay's bad/annoying business practices, certainly not the band or their direct management), and even if we did get something off the ground, i assume they would either prevent it from becoming official or take what we made away from us and hire "professionals" to work with our framework (by "take" i mean "buy," but that would break my heart, i think, selling off something i worked so hard on).

this also costs an absurd amount of money. whiiiiich i don't have :P

my dream is rather simple actually. I just want to see them live at Wembly and hopefully get to be on their DVD (if there's one). Doesnt have to be long, just a second of me having a hell of a good time with all the other amazing Coldplay fans. That will do. :)

I'm not too sure about EMI myself, but the person in Dick Clark's office knows the music business and all its details. I am sure they could explain and recommend some things to me since they are in the know. I can try calling them on Monday and see what she says.

now THAT's something i'll NEVER hear coming out of my mum's mouth...half-kidding or not. :shocked2:

coolness!

btw, you're already in uni now? then when you go over to UK in Sep is it on a transfer program kinda thing? or you're actually continuing on with further studies?

BTW...do you all know who Dick Clark is?

Yep, I know who he is.

Before Ryan Seacrest, before Carlson Daly on TRL, there was...Dick Clark :smug:

Yes, she's going to the UK on a transfer kinda thing. We call it Study Abroad.

She needs it to complete her degree in British Music (ok, that's not really her degree)

Personally, I am very, very, very jealous :P

Dick Clark - the father of all TV presenters! :p

that's so cool that you guys have that option! :)

the only option i had was to transfer from Malaysia to Australia. that was still a great experience...but not as great as being able to transfer to UK.

tho come Sep i shall get my chance to complete my British Music degree! muahahaha

well, ok, i'm not really going to UK to study that either...but that's a sorta side plan in between (real) studies. :wink3:

yes, like lola said, i'm going over to england for my third year in uni. if i like it enough and the university likes me enough, i plan to stay there for my fourth year, since it would make things a hell of a lot easier. i WISH i was majoring in british music...i'm actually going abroad to get a degree in american culture . ironic, i know.

liz, you're going to england too next year?!

lori: , yeah, i get that all the time. it's usually not a big deal, because i always say that when everyone else WISHES they look young, we still will!
