UPDATE: 23RD SEPTEMBER 2009: (VIDEOS ADDED)

Chris Martin abides by the bizarre ritual which stems from an incident in the group’s early days when his bandmates punished him for sacking their drummer Will Champion by making him get drunk - Chris Martin forces himself to drink vodka to remind himself “not to be an idiot”.

During the South Bank Show, Chris said: "It started when I had to ask forgiveness for sacking our drummer Will about 10 years ago. Three days later the rest of us were feeling really miserable and we asked Will to meet me and out bassist Guy Berryman in Monkey Chews, a bar in Camden, London, where we asked him to come back. They made me have lots of vodka and cranberry juice in remembrance of what a nasty piece of work I was being. Now if I find myself making a big mistake I have to force myself to drink that stuff to remind me not to be such an idiot!"

In an online article at Broadcastnow, it has been exclusively revealed that Melvyn Bragg is currently filming a UK show which will feature Coldplay, before he leaves the show. No dates yet when this will be broadcast. Here is the article:

ITV insiders fear that Melvyn Bragg's departure will mark the death of arts on the commerical broadcaster, despite assurances today that new arts programmes will be sought. Staff in the South Bank Show production unit were in tears this morning as they read an email from Bragg to say he would resign after the current season concluded in 2010. Meanwhile, ITV executive chairman Michael Grade met with senior managers this morning to break the news of Bragg's departure in person.

Bragg, who has spent 33 years at ITV, is today filming an upcoming South Bank Show episode profiling the multi-award winning rock band Coldplay.

One insider said: "Some of the staff still did not know that Bragg was leaving until the press were told. It's a been quite a shock and a lot of them are inconsolable, especially since Melvyn did not tell them himself. There is definitely a feeling that it marks the end of the arts department at ITV. For years, The South Bank Show has survived, but many think that is because Melvyn has such strong political connections, which are quite useful for ITV. The department has been cut back so substantially and now most people are resigned to the fact that they will probably lose their job when The South Bank Show finishes."

Another source said: "The arts department will be devastated, with yet more redundancies on top of the many they have already made."

The South Bank Show is one of the few arts programmes currently airing on ITV. In the past year other arts commissions have included Aled Jones' Christmas Carols and religious art programme Faith in the Frame. In a statement earlier today, ITV said Bragg was discussing other potential projects with the broadcaster and the network would be "looking at opportunities for new arts programming".

An ITV spokesman added that it was already known that current contract for The South Bank Show was due to expire next summer, but said potential alternative roles may be found for staff members in other areas of ITV Studios. It is not clear how many people are currently employed by The South Bank Show but insiders believe it is somewhere between five and ten. The spokesman confirmed ITV would be looking for new arts programmes, with indies and producers welcome to pitch ideas to the relevant factual or entertainment commissioners "depending on what the idea is".

"We are always open to receiving pitches for new ideas, not only for arts but across all genres," he said.

Chris Martin wants The South Bank show saved

Coldplay front man Chris Martin has declared that ITV flagship arts programme the South Bank Show should be saved.

ITV announced that the series, which has been fronted by Melvyn Bragg since 1978, will cease to exist after the current series comes to a close next summer.

But Martin, who was filmed as part of an upcoming episode of The South Bank Show last week, told newspaper Metro that he would lobby to save the iconic strand.

"It's a great show and something must be done," he said.

Bragg will step down from his role as presenter of the show and controller of arts at ITV Studios when the show concludes in June 2010. He said that the decision had been made when ITV told him they could no longer afford to produce the show to the same standard.

ITV has promised that it will be looking to replace The South Bank Show with a new arts programme, but insiders fear that the show's cancellation will spell the end for arts on the commercial broadcaster.

What is the "South Banks Show"? like what happens on it? is it a documentary thing? or is it a talk show?

The South Bank Show is a long running Arts programme over here in Britain. It has run for 31 years presented by Melvin Bragg. It'll be like that 60 Minutes programme they did of Coldplay in America, but much longer. And all I can say is thank fuck there's a show dedicated to the band on British tv after all these years.

Coldplay are to feature in a documentary for the South Bank Show later this year.

The award winning band will be seen in discussion with Melvyn Bragg in the autumn as he travels with them for six months, taking in their win at this year’s Grammy Awards, a tour throughout Japan, the Brit Awards and the War Child concert in London, where they performed with Bono, the Killers and Gary Barlow of Take That.

Bragg will also be seen spending quality time with the band whilst they work on their next album in their north London studios, with Brian Eno who also produced Coldplay’s 2008 critically acclaimed album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends.

The South Bank Show is in its final series, with the last South Bank Show Awards being transmitted in January 2010.

Coldplay recently made a live album free to download from their website in May which received over 3.5m downloads in the first six days of it being online. They will also be playing two sold out shows at Wembley Stadium in September, with support from Jay-Z, Girls Aloud and White Lies.

This is FANTASTIC news!!!

War Child?

Maybe that was that team filming us in the queue?? :stunned:

Or does the description mean that they talk about it?

Sorry if I misunderstood that!

Oh wow, this is amazing news and it certainly sounds like they were there during the Warchild gig, as well as the other places mentioned and in the studio too. Even if it's only backstage footage from Warchild it will still be incredible. :)
