Coldplays 5th - Parachutes II??

Featured Replies

Jonny Buckland has said there is a possibility that their next album will be quite acoustic. Add this to what Chris Martin said in saying that it will be quite stripped down, does this mean we are going to get a Parachutes II? What do you think?

anything they put out will be amazing :D but this would be especially great! i love parachutes!

As much as I love Parachutes, I don't want a rehash of a previous album. I'm totally fine with drawing elements from Parachutes (in fact, it would sound great), but mirroring a past work generally does you no favors.

In other words, go ahead and give me an evolution of Parachutes along with other new tricks they have, not Parachutes 2.0.

I don't think they'll ever record an album that's a copy of Parachutes. For one, they've evolved as a band since then, so they're not in the same place they were before. I imagine that the new album will be acoustic and stripped down, similar to Parachutes in that way, but will be an evolution of Viva La Vida and the path they're on now.

Acoustic viva?

No, that's not what I meant. I just meant that it'll probably be more like Viva La Vida than Parachutes in terms of songwriting, even if it's an acoustic and stripped down album. It's very unlikely they'll put out an exact copy of Parachutes 9 or 10 years down the road.

As much as I like Parachutes, it's not my favourite album in terms of sound. I think someone mentioned it in another thread, that maybe by stripped down and acoustic they mean songs like 'Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground' or 'Prospekt's March'.

I Guarantee to you all, and i've said it before, and i'll say it again. The song closest to the direction of the next album will be. Prospekts March / poppyfields :D

I think too!

Parachutes was an intimate album that reflects their 'uni' years... Tha way Chris sang at that time, you almost have the impression he's singing for himself and not for an audience....It's totally different now, and as they said, they 'included' the 'must-have-to-play-this-in-front-of-thousand-of-people' factor during the writing process....

So I guess it will have a PM feel and maybe Parachutes feel, but it will not be 'as quiet' or 'simple'... They have learned so many instruments, and I sense that they will continue to 'multitask' on LP 5 (Will learning the accordion is not gratuitous I feel...^^)

Anyway, I can't wait to hear what they come up with!

would be great but I doubt it, Chris mentioned middle eastern influences. much like how Viva had African and Oriental influences and songs, I expect the same for this next album.

I'd absolutely love it, but at this point I can't imagine them escaping their arena-rock influences. As Chris has said many times, the band adores the crowd-pleasing singalongs like VlV and Lovers in Japan.

Becoming more acoustic doesn't mean they have to totally escape the crowd-pleaser rock anthems. They can have a healthy mix as long as the album still flows well.

I second this. I love Parachutes, it's my fave cd, and I would love to see them return to their roots, so to speak, but I don't see it being a part II I see it being new and fresh, as Coldplay know how to do very well

I would love for them to make the 5th album more "folksy," as in having a more organic sound. I hope that's what Jonny means with the word acoustic.

& i third that. i love their acoustic stuff from the Parachutes era, but then re-hashing Parachutes would be like going backwards rather than bringing on something new. that said, something in the general direction of the acoustic stuff in Prospekt's March (the title track being the case in point) would be great.

i'd also really like to see how the middle eastern influence would work out on their music. :)

NO! If they did this it would sound TERRIBLE

They've got the man in Will Champion to bring a folksy sound to it. Perhaps him leading sessions whilst Chris wasn't there is beginning to show through now.

I don't think they'll rehash Parachutes. After all, the band is in a different place now than they were then, and they won't want to write the same kind of music. There's a huge difference between Violet Hill and Spies, IMO.

That being said, it might sound like Violet Hill/Viva La Vida/Glass Of Water/any current song, but more stripped down and acoustic. I think that's what he meant, not that Coldplay are going to put out a Parachutes II.
