"White Guilt."

Featured Replies

What do you think of it? Do you think it even exists?

(For any of you that may not be familiar with this, "white guilt" is a term used to describe white people's guiltiness about being unfair to black people/Mexican people/any other ethnicities/races/nationalities in the course of the white person's long reign over Western society. Example: it is usually acceptable to say "cracker" on an American TV show ["cracker" = insult used by black people toward white people] but not "nigger." Many attribute this to the idea that white people feel so ashamed of what their ancestors did to black people they feel self-righteous enough to think they deserve punishment.)

Discuss.

Heres what i think.

Heres what I think.

Just before radiohead starts there mini tour this summer they will release two or three new songs for download on their site in the digital download area. After the tour, a few more live tracks will be availiable. I don't forcast a new album for at least another year.

Or maybe because "Cracker" is not in the least bit offensive

Well there isn't really a Black People equivalent of Nigger so I couldn't think of a better example... :\

Edit: Wait, here's one: When the movie Slumdog Millionaire came out a lot of white people started fawning over it even though they didn't particularly like it much more than an average movie and white guilt could be the reason it got so many awards, because white people like to feel culturally relevant due to their guiltiness about being white.

Yeah, that Slumdog Millionaire point is seriously weak and almost offensive in its own way.

I didn't say I agreed with it... :uhoh2: It's just something I've heard used as an example. Personally I liked the movie, I thought it was very good.

Don't worry, I'm not attacking you, just the idea that whites pretend to favor ethnic films because we're so embarrassed of being caucasian.

I do think it is partially true, though... I mean, I think the media is gentler on non-whites sometimes, because they don't want anyone thinking they're racist or something. I suppose I could be reading into it too much.

white guilt, you mean racism and xenophobia?

my first geography teacher at high school forbid us use any racist term against any other in the class (even when there were no foreign people there that may feel insulted), that only got the opposite reaction he expected, some dudes used those terms just to annoy the teacher.

now my case:

i have no reason why to use any racist term, my time abroad thought me to be open-minded and learn to not generalize about how a community/country is for a person i know.

and i don't feel the white guilt in my shoulders, i mean if white people used black people i think that is part of history, and we can't do much to change it now, what happened happened, but we shouldn't go on with some attitudes that were the "right" thing back then.

anyways i feel bad when stupid dudes insult someone for the fact they are not national people, as when i was in a chinese restaurant and one of the dudes there tried to abuse one of the girls verbally, calling her with bad names  honestly if i would be a boy i would stand up and ban that guy from the restaurant.

last time i've been in madrid (january) i noticied i have developed a protective side with foreign people, i always left some tip in some bars because there work some people from south america, sure they worked well and deserved the tip but i mainly did it because i know that there are a lot of stupid people that insult them just because they are foreign.

i think politics could do a better thing, i mean i've noticied that some series (in the US), have only white or only black cast, i don't think it'll help to change things and allow that new generations don't keep beign racist with each other. (sure, you may think i am wrong, but at times some communities use their colour cause as a shield that might allow them to do whatever they want to even when that is a crime or ilegal, or they blame others of be racist when is just the opposite).

so do i have answered your question of i have gone too off-topic?

i don't like it when people call me a beaner.

i don't like it when people call me a hipster. :(

 or some asshole... he thinks it's funny when he calls me swine flu.

i feel guiltly about white peoples invasion of australia. Convicts were only meant to be trasnfered here and settle if the place was uninhabbited but they did it anyway. white people destroyed the aboriginal culture and their connection with the land as well as implementing the stolen generation, shoving them (indigenous) people into missionaries and massacaring them (there are no native tasmania aborigines anymore). aborigines weren't even allowed to vote until 67. They have a particularly low standard of living compared to everyone else in the country and many are alcoholics and take drugs as well as smoke. Many lives have been ruined and it is a known fact that aborigines live 20years less than whites. Mnay kids cant get a good education often because parents spend gov. money on booz and smokes. All of this is because of white people. I feel very guilty.

I don't feel any guilt for the things that my ancestors did. I've been raised in a time of such equality that I continually forgot why Obama being elected was a historic event. rofl.

The past is the past. We can't make up for what happened; we can only make sure it doesn't happen again.

I dont feel guilty about anything like that.

should I? :bigcry:

Cracker really isnt that bad. I honestly cant think of a bad term to identify white people as. There shouldnt be any terms for any race, its sad. But, its not just white people who use them. Yeah being white makes us the majority, but anyone can be racist and anyone can feel guilt. But.. I see where being a white person would play a larger role. I had to read this,http://www.case.edu/president/aaction/UnpackingTheKnapsack.pdf for one of my classes.

there is always going to be racism, whether its between whites and blacks, blacks and asian etc etc. Fr myself, i dont agree with racism at all. but i cant stop people being ignorant.

amen.

i'm pretty much color blind when it comes to races.
