Concacaf Gold Cup USA 09

Featured Replies

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the main football competition of the men's national football teams governed by CONCACAF.

In the nineteen overall championships, only seven nations have won the title. Mexico is the most successful CONCACAF team, having won the tournament seven times. The current Champion, the United States, follows with four titles, while Costa Rica holds three. The other former champions are Canada with two titles, and Honduras, Haiti, Guatemala with one title each.

When the Gold Cup does not fall the same year as an edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup, the winner, or highest place team that is a member of both CONCACAF and FIFA, qualifies for the next staging of that tournament.

Today starts the competition, the groups are:

Group A

Costa Rica

El Salvador

And the semis in Philly at Lincoln Financial Field are held on the week that I have my wisdom teeth pulled out, so if I were to go then I'd be all puffy and gross. :( Bad timing all around.

Today's matches:

Panama vs Guadeloupe

Nicaragua vs Mexico

Just home from the fights...I mean the Gold Cup. Mexico and Panama just can't play nice. :P

First match: Guadeloupe vs Nicaragua

Guadeloupe was easily the stronger team. Passed the ball well and pushed up the field. Nicaragua were terrible at passing and crossing. Was just a matter of time before Guadeloupe scored.

Guadeloupe 2-0 Nicaragua

Second Match: Mexico vs Panama

Was practically a home game for Mexico as a large portion of Mexico's population resides in Houston. :P Lots of hard fouls from the get go. Panama's players looked physically larger than Mexico's but Mexico was very quick. Once the crowd got the Mexican wave going they were rewarded with an early goal from Mexico. Panama leveled around 20 minutes later. Then the fights started. Each team had players ejected with straight red cards at the end of the first half. Late in the second half it got really crazy. Mexico's coach ejected, another Panama player ejected, cups raining down on the players, at least a 10 minute delay as they tried to get the crowd under control. All of Panama's players had to go stand out in the center of the pitch to keep from being hit. Once the match restarted, it didn't last. Panama had an injured player being carried off the pitch and someone pelted him with a cup. Another delay. Ref finally just blew the final whistle. There's no way they played enough extra time to make up for the huge stoppage, but by then he had lost control of the match and the crowd.

Mexico 1-1 Panama

Any way I got to try out my new camera. This pic will give you an idea of where I sat. This seat pointed out would be where I sat, but on the opposite end.

Reliant seats 70,500 but only around 50,000 people attended.

Here's the link to my pics http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w171/angie7581/footie/Gold%20Cup/

Nice pics Angie:D

Your new camera is going to come in verrrrrrry handy I think:sneaky:

Nice seat, Angie! :D

I want to go to the quarterfinals blah...:(

I got really emotional when Quaranta scored for the US against Honduras in the 2-0 win...*sigh* He has come a long way.

  • 3 weeks later...

If the US team just wanted to sit back and WATCH Mexico score they should have bought a ticket and a beer like everyone else. :dozey:

Our defense was nonexistent.

5-0, and could have easily been 8 or 9-0
