September 14, 200916 yr The Polaris Music Prize is an annual award that goes to the album deemed by music critics as the best Canadian album. It also receives a cool $20, 000 of cash. Personally I am really excited for this years prize. It features a few of my favourite bands; local artist Joel Plaskett nominated for his triple album, Hey Rosetta! one of my current obsessions, and Metric, also another band I have been listening to non-stop the past few months. This link here has all the shortlisted albums streaming: http://www.spinner.ca/2009/09/02/cd-listening-party-stream-all-10-polaris-prize-shortlist-albums/ The shortlist: Elliott Brood - Mountain Meadows Fucked Up - The Chemistry of Common Life Great Lake Swimmers - Lost Channels Hey Rosetta! - Into Your Lungs K'NAAN - Troubadour Malajube - Labyrinthes Metric - Fantasies Joel Plaskett - Three Chad VanGaalen - Soft Airplane Patrick Watson - Wooden Arms http://www.polarismusicprize.ca/
September 14, 200916 yr WITHOUT STADIUM LOVE I am a bit biased because I completely fell in love with Emily Haines and I haven't heard of most of them, but Metric ftw.
September 14, 200916 yr Author I've listened to half of the albums on the list. Working on listening to the other half. Some very good albums. I haven't been disappointed yet. Today I've really been enjoying the K'Naan album. He is a rapper from Somalia. Some of his lyrics are really deep, go into the struggles of Somalia, which is neat because they don't tend to cover the unrest there in the popular media here.
September 14, 200916 yr Hey Rosetta! - Into Your Lungs Malajube - Labyrinthes Metric - Fantasies :wacky:

September 14, 200916 yr Hey Rosetta will win. *crossed fingers* :D But yeah... lots of great artists on that list some I've heard from and some I've heard of, but never anything bad... Malajube, K'naan, Metric... (love Malajube) It's blaphemy, I know, but Joel Plaskett has never done much for me. But even people who don't like him have been saying 3 is something special. There's a magazine who got permission to stream all of the nominated albums on their website... now which one was it?
September 14, 200916 yr Author Found it!!! Listen to all the albums HERE! I posted that link up a little earlier :P But yeah, I know I'm a big Plaskett fan, but Three truly is a great album. I was surprised. I've always been more of a live Plaskett fan than an album Plaskett fan, but this album has changed that. I'm also hoping for Hey Rosetta! I'm seeing them on Friday, I'm hoping to find them before the show and see what they think about being nominated, or who they think will win type of thing. I really hope they win, but its hard to say who will.
September 15, 200916 yr Author mmmhmmm It is a very solid album, I know quite a few people on here like it which is cool
September 15, 200916 yr I posted that link up a little earlier :POops. :embarassed: Well it clearly wasn't obvious enough then. :p Wait, are Hey Rosetta playing here?
September 15, 200916 yr Author They're playing in Sackville N.B. I'm going to Boston to see U2 there on Sunday. Catching the HR! show on the trip down.
September 22, 200916 yr The ceremony is happening right now if anyone wants to watch online: http://www.muchmusic.com/tv/polaris/
September 22, 200916 yr I really wanted to watch (just for Hey Rosetta!), but it's Canada only. I can't find another video stream anywhere.. :bigcry: I'm listening CBC Radio 3, though, so at least I should be able to hear it. I've been waiting for Hey Rosetta! to come on, but not yet. >_>
September 22, 200916 yr ^Aw, sorry. I don't know if Hey Rosetta! have played yet or not. It's just Much... a proxy might work if you know how to use one. If not they announced that the video would be available as a podcast on radio 3 in a couple of days. Visually you're not missing much- it's a theatre set up like any dinner awards show, and an upper balcony around the back for the non-musicians. Mostly bored nervous looking musicians waiting and watching. And then the performances on a colourful but sparse stage.
September 22, 200916 yr It gives you a chance to get into music some people have never heard of... I need to get and listen to a lot of the favorite on this list, such as Hey Rosetta! and Great Lake Swimmers... I really want Metric to win, because they deserve some sort of acclaim, i mean, they have it in Canada, however I wish they were a bit bigger everywhere else. they all deserve it
September 22, 200916 yr ^^I thought of a proxy, but one that I tried didn't seem to work. Apparently, free proxies don't really work with streaming.. Hey Rosetta! have yet to play (unless I'm just confused). And yeah, I was hoping that it would be available to watch afterwards. Thanks for the information.
September 22, 200916 yr Well it started at 10pm here and it's after midnight now.... and I came in around 11:30, so I really can't tell you what the first hour and a half was like. But I guess most people have played already.
September 22, 200916 yr Oh, I've been listening for a long time. I've checked to see how many bands should be left. Only two more after the one playing right now, I think. One of these two left should be Hey Rosetta!. I'm kind of annoyed because I've been listening since about when the first band played, but what I've been waiting for is probably going to be last (and I'm not really interested in the other stuff). Wait, they may have just said that Hey Rosetta! is next...?
