Most irritating advert? This one is beyond compare... but the ones featuring Iggy Pop and Johnny Rotten are also up there

An Italian opera singer with a comedy moustache selling car insurance has topped a poll to find last year's most irritating advertisement.

The advert, for the gocompare website, was closely followed by Cash4Gold trying to persuade recession-hit families to sell their jewellery for cash.

The top 20, compiled by Marketing magazine, also features singer Iggy Pop selling insurance for Swiftcover - which admits it does not insure musicians - and former Sex Pistol John Lydon plugging Country Life butter.

A spokesman for Marketing said: 'It was a vintage year for irritating ads.

'The end of Kerry Katona's contract with Iceland did remove one regular fixture from the annual list but a host of other brands has joined the fray.'

However, Nicholas Hall, head of marketing at gocompare.com, said: 'I'd say the campaign has performed exactly as we'd hoped so far.

You can't please all the people all of the time.'

Meanwhile, the magazine reports a Halifax bank advertisement set in an imaginary radio station is already among the most cringeworthy of 2010.
