Has anybody read The Great Gatsby?

Featured Replies

Hello!

This is the first book I read in real English, not any adapted version and I just wonder if anyone has read it and if you liked it?

please don't tell the end... I still have 20 pages left, and maybe someone will read it:P

I read it and I hated it. There is so much better English literature out there.

Basically a few whores try to have sex with the main character and Gatsby and one lady gets bitch-slapped by one of the dudes. The ending was pretty cool I must admit, so to the original poster, get ready.

no but we've been talking about it in History cos of Fitzgerald (writer)...1920's flappers, etc., etc...

The story wasn't that great but F. Scott Fitzgerald has such a brilliant style of writing, shame he never really wrote a book to live up to that

I love the book. Truly a great classic.

Baz Luhrman will be directing the movie, coming out next year I think.

Baz Luhrman? Seriously? Aww, my favorite! :D

I began reading the book last summer but I've got so many books to read and a really intense year at school so it's still only half-way through. I don't know how it is written in English but the Finnish translation is kinda dull (and I know translations do sometimes ruin books)...

But for the movie, I should read it then. Maybe in March when school gets easier. :)

Well I've finished it today and the end is quite good. I must admit it's borind the first part, but i'm really happy to have read a book in real english!

what book would you recomend to me... i know it's hard to say that a book is easy if it's written in you language but if any comes to your mind tell me... my english level is just First Certificate by Cambridge.... I passes last month... so a book for that level but not adapted.

thanks!

The Great Gatsby is required reading in a good chunk of American high schools. Definitely a bizarre but great read, but you don't begin to really appreciate it until you understand all the crazy symbolism and all that. In fact, it can be boring if you don't understand a lot of it.

If you want another "required HS reading-type" book, I'd recommend One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Some of my mandatory high school reads were dreadful, but that one's a personal favorite and is considered a classic.

My girlfriend has read it and said it made better toilet roll than it did reading. I was wondering why she had ink marks on her arse.

OMFG YES. I've watched the movie and loved it, but then I got to the book. The book is at LEAST 10x better.
