It's an "urban myth" that's kind of followed him around ever since he became famous: Even though Seal was born in Britain, I read from some credible source that he was born to a Nigerian father, who was a yoruba. The father according to the custome of many Yorubas gave his son a "tribal mark" (scaring of the face which distinguish one tribe from another) as a cultural symbol. I am not sure what went wrong, and Seal was finally raised by a Brazilian or so, who estranged him from his real mother: however, the scarring on his face came as his protest to conceal his affiliation to his heritage, or his hatred for those marks which obviously are inflicted disformity, and he took to scrapping the mark which has been given him by his dad for cultural purpose. Myself being a Yoruba, I know how out of place are such marks on children, and would have done anything possible to get them off my face were some given me at birth.

I'm not disputing there's a source, I'm just saying that this information can never be taken as 100% reliable, and that there are alternative viewpoints out there, which may, or may not be, correct (just as there were with MJ). It wouldn't be the first time that people in the public eye have tried to keep certain things about their background private, and the public are always likely to continue speculating, whatever is said. Of course, if Seal is descended from Nigerian tribal "royalty", it makes for a good story!
