Colombia Elections 2010

Featured Replies

Well, since there's an UK election thread. :p Let me explain the current situation:

These elections are VERY important for my country. And for the first time in a long time (from what I can remember) it seems likely that there will be a runoff between the two biggest candidates. So far in the polls, they're tied.

Everyone is so excited, specially the young people who were never really interested in politics and have reciently been attracted by the green party candidate, for his fresh ideas and proposals. Most Colombians know how the actual president (8 years) has helped the country to overcome violence, but he and his goverment have been involved in so many scandals. The president became obsessed with his power and we are tired of the actual social and economical situation.

So, it's the struggle of the old politics (some might say, full of corruption and political favoritism) represented by Juan Manuel Santos and his party (the party of the actual president) and the new politics (with education and the invaluable of life) represented by Antanas Mockus and the green party.

Mockus and Santos.

I'm totally going green. I'm voting for the first time. :D Here's some random article about the unprecedented political enthusiasm an alternative (Green) party arouses:

The election is on 30th of May.

A possible second round vote (if necessary) would be on June 20th.

Are your friends voting? if so, what are their political preferences?

That looks out of context, a spambot asked me "How are you doing dear?" and then went on to sell me handbags, I'll never forget him.

Antanas Mokus? Is that the guy who has a Lithuanian background?

Also - how does the political system work in your country? Like the US I understand you have a senate and a house of Representatives don't you? Does elections for Congress take place every 4 years or like the US every two years?

Yes, he is the son of Lithuaninan immigrants... Many came to the country during/after the 2nd World War.

Lol, the truth is that I have so little idea of the actual political system in my country. But yes, the congress is made up of 122 members of the senate and a 166 members chamber of representatives. All members are elected every 4 years... just as the presidency power.

For you to understand how BIG this is, you better check the picture of our next president when he was running for Mayor of the capital (he actually was Mayor of the city twice):

I can only thank god, Boris Johnson didn't do the same when he ran for London mayor two years ago. If you don't know who he is - here's a picture of him.

Do we?

Why do people always say that? He's a moron, get rid.

The only reason anyone could like him is because he's funny to laugh AT, not a ringing endorsement really.

But yes, people do like him generally. The gimp.

You'll be pleased to know I'll be voting for his party on Thursday! Let's see some proper leadership for the first time since 2007.

so if elections were this friday (right?), do you know already the results Faust?

you'll do the second round finally?

Wait, you mean you don't use second rounds (round-offs) in Tibet or wherever you are located?

Well... this last friday. It's hard to say it, but polls suggest Mockus would get about 39% and Santos 26% that not being enough to win, a second vote round would give Mockus more than 50% and Santos only about 20%.

That was for last Friday... I hope for this next Friday Mockus rises some and gets more closer to the 51% of the votes he needs for winning on the first round. :D

i'm spanish, old memeber here, just changed my username recently... :uhoh:

we don't have two rounds on elections here, i wish we had it. :(

let's see what happen on the second round, so far Mockus seems more close to win.

  • Author

Oh wait... are you Ari? :uhoh2:

Yes... he's more close to win, but unfortunately the things might get really complicated. Some important/influential political characters (including the president) do not really want Mockus to win and they're making alliances to support Santos... The dirty campaign just started. Mockus doesn't have the political machinery the other candidate has, since he just relies on the opinion vote, but he's a very honest man and many people can see that.

For those who understand Spanish, you could read some interesting article about Mockus family here: http://www.elespectador.com/impreso/antanas-mockus/articuloimpreso201018-antanas-mockus-lituano

Elections this Sunday!!

It seems that the two candidates (Mockus and Santos) are still leading the intentions of voting, but some other candidates appear to be growing on it too. Let's just wait and see what happens!

There will be probably a second voting round cause none of the candidates will accomplish 51% of the total votes.

Here are the results of the many many opinion polls made so far on what we should expect for the first and second round... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colombian_presidential_election,_2010

as you can see, the results are very confusing...
