Polaris Music Prize 2010 Karkwa wins!

Featured Replies

Every September, the Polaris music prize is handed out to the best Canadian album as decided by a jurors and a Grand Jury. The albums selected are based on artistic merit, not album sales, label, or genre. This year the 10 finalists are The Besnard Lakes (The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night), Broken Social Scene (Forgiveness Rock Record), Caribou (Swim), Karkwa (Les Chemins de Verre), Dan Mangan (Nice, Nice, Very Nice), Owen Pallett (Heartland), Radio Radio (Belmundo Regal), The Sadies (Darker Circles), SHAD (TSOL), and Tegan and Sara (Sainthood).

Who do you want to win etc.?

I'm covering it over at my blog this week. http://thebrokenspeaker.com/

Gala and award ceremony is on September 20th.

Poll?

I think either Broken Social Scene or Caribou will win it.

So it's like the Mercury Awards

Except I've never heard of most of the nominees, and Dizzee bl**dy Rascal isn't among them!:P

Polaris Prize 2010

I do though need to listen to the rest of those albums

My preference:

1. The Besnard Lakes

2. Caribou

For some reason I haven't heard the Besnard Lakes one so I'll will have to get onto that one. Which other releases on the list are worth checking out?

I loved the Tegan & Sara one when it came out. Kind of fizzled out for me, but good album.

I also love the Karkwa album. It is all french, but wicked awesome. Dan Mangan has great indie folk stuff. Pretty underrated outside of Canada. Shad is the only album I havent checked out really.

I'm familiar with Tegan & Sara.;)

Listen to Sainthood? It is an enjoyable listen.

To be honest all the albums nominated this year are excellent.

Yeah, I've heard Tegan and Sarah. Really good, and it got lots of triple j play down here as well as a few songs in the hottest hundred last year. I will have to take a close look at the others/

Anyway, I think it's great that decent Canadian music (assuming it all is, as I'm not familiar with all of the nominees) is being promoted in this way, as opposed to manufactured pop cr*p like Justin Bieber.;)

Thank goodness he hasn't been nominated!

I'm only familiar with half of the albums listed. :disappointed: (but I did manage to see four of them live :nice:)

1. Caribou

2. BSS

3. Owen Pallett

4. Besnard Lakes

5. Tegan & Sara

caribou, BSS and besnard lakes also got a little airplay earlier in the year with the lead singesl but nothing note worthy.

im still pissed off about crystal castles being ignored.

Yeah it is a great award for that reason. They say it is based on artistic merit and each year they always make really solid choices. It's the only music award that I'm happy with.

At least it was on the long list of 40 albums!

So I take it none of the nominees are superficial, "plastic" acts? If so, that's great.;)

They're all legit. It's nice there are a few French acts nominated this year too. That's always been a big criticism of the award. The Karkwa album is particularly enjoyable. I think Coldplayers would enjoy them.

^You're right. Nothing earth-shattering, but certainly very pleasant. A bit "Fleet Foxes" in places too.;)
