Experience with alcohol.

Featured Replies

I'd like to know what kind of experiences some of you have had with drinking. I'm 21 and had my first drink when I was 15 (a little before I turned 16, the legal drinking age in my country). I've never had big problems with drinking before; I've always known where my limits are and I never drink without the company of friends.

A few days ago, however, I suffered from acute alcohol poisoning. I was lucky enough to be at my student association in the company of several good friends and my ex-boyfriend. The emergency services were contacted and they were able to wake me. Thankfully my friends took good care of me and took me home.

You can imagine how scared I was. According to one of the barmen I did not drink an excessive amount (around 8 units of alcohol). Possibly the problem was that I didn't eat enough and drank to many different types of beverages in too short a timespan.

I'm not sure what to do now, and I'd like your opinion. Should I try to quit drinking for a while, or altogether? Do I need to seek additional medical care? Have any of you ever experienced something like this?

This is rather shocking. Glad you're OK, at least.

Welcome back, by the way.

I would suggest you take it slow for a while, or indeed stop for a while. There is nothing to lose if you do. It is good that you are looking to educate yourself with alcohol and are concerned about your well being so well done for making the thread.

I had something similar in December last year and I had to stop for six months until my liver recovered. With me I wasn't drinking too much over a short period, but over the years I'd drank only cider and whiskey and eventually it caught up with me.

I think it would be important for you to understand how your body is affected by alcohol and where your limits are. In future stick to the same beverages and don't drink on an empty stomach. Other than that it does not sound as though you have a problem and any decision about stopping or cutting down will be made ultimately by yourself, and since you had the sense to make this thread I am confident you will do the best thing for yourself when you have looked into the effects it has had on your body.

That's scary! I'm glad you're ok!

Nothing like that has ever happened to me, the worse I've been is sick the day after.

I wouldn't say quit drinking all together, but just take it easy the next time and just make sure to eat before and drink water while drinking.

And it's always mind-blowing to hear "16 year old drinking age".

Wow... glad that you're alright

In terms of personal experience I haven't experienced anything close to that. I mean I usually have a limit to what I drink, and have never had major hangover or anything (except for perhaps a headache once or twice).

I think that you should though slow down and take it easy for a while from drinking. If it happened to me I would really limit myself and also reevaluate how much I am/should be drinking.

Wow, 8 units is like 3 beers or something?

Hi by the way Irene, sorry to hear about your experience.

When I studied I drank a lot, well everyone I knew did, like excessive amounts, but I never had to go to hospital, I knew quite a few people that had to at some point.

Well I'm in no place to judge what you should do, it's never been an issue for me so it's never something I've had to worry about. You should talk to a doctor, 8 units is a small amount of alcohol, even for a girl (if Im getting the units right in my head Ive known tiny girls who would drink 3/4 times that regularly) so it may be how your system works.

I'm going to take a guess and assume that it probably had nothing to do with the alcohol in a way, but it definitely wouldn't help. You never know, people can pass out for many reasons and you just happened to be drinking at the time. It may have been scary but if you didn't need your stomach pumped or anything then it's probably not a big deal, not to patronise you or anything.

Speak to the doc anyway kiddo. Good to hear you're fine.

Don't drink so much and if you do drink make sure you have food.

(From a Tee-total person)

Glad to hear alright :surprised:

Well I have no experience with alcohol, I'm over the legal drinking age but I just never cared about it

8 units means 8-10 beers, Reilly ;)

I don't feel comfortable talking about my experience with alcohol

I know there is people here that already know what happened anyways.

drinking changed my life.

it can be dangerous so don't be stupid with it,

good to know you are ok now. I think you should be ok because you know your limits,

I don't know what caused that to happened. I'm clueless but what I can tell you is to do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

good luck

You talked about it publicly on here before, so maybe something's changed since then you are less comfortable then you were before.

EDIT: Wait what am I thinking, that situation had nothing to do with this so I can see why you wouldn't mention it. She's more worried of her general health while drinking, not getting too drunk.

Your beer is weak if each pint only contains 1 unit :P

To be honest I'm not a big fan of drinking. It usually depresses me unless I'm surrounded by great company. And these days I never am when drinking.

@reilly

I was going to say I don't fell comfortable talking about it anymore but idk why I didn't.

I realized that talking about it doesn't do any good

it's in the past. so I was stupid & the dumb ass took advantage of it.

I have a gorgeous kid so that's all that matters

I know what you mean Iz, more power to you. :nice:

Alcohol is the most dangerous drug I have done.

Woops missed this!

Well any drug is dangerous if you do too much of it, or do it in patterns that are dangerous.

STATEMENT NULL VOID

Yes. But you can't compare something like trying heroin once and trying alcohol once. Not that I have done heroin of course.

I can drink quite a bit as long as it's not Gin, had a bad experience with drinking too much of it when I was younger and can't even stand the smell of it now, lots of people seem to have one drink they can't stand due to getting too drunk on it when young.
