Ok, it's a big one.

Ā

peer pressure, to try to stop masturbation, for "hygienic" purposes. Basically for bullshit reasons. Female genital mutilation is even more barbaric.

I think the peer pressure thing plays a large part of why non religious parents have their boys circumcised. They don't want him to look different from his peers, and therefore have the potential to be ridiculed for it. Also peer pressure from the parents peers, because they are going against the norm.

The foreskin is part of our anatomy and has an important role. If you like being circumcised thats fine but i think people should be given the option. I would be furious if somebody had removed parts of my body without my consent.

I kinda figure if you're born with it it's there for a reason.

Oh and i didnt answer what the role of the foreskin is. Itā€™s first task, during infancy, is to protect the glans from infection by shielding it from bodily waste and other types of exposure. Throughout life, the foreskin is a protective jacket, which guards against trauma and injury. It also keeps the glans soft and moist. All mammals have a foreskin. It also has sexual benefits.

I imagine it would be like the clitorus not having a hood to keep it protected. Ouch. Wouldn't being circumcised desensitise the penis? To have all of the nerves continually exposed, continually rubbing against material, would surely not be as comfortable as having it be protected inside the foreskin. Plus there's also the obvious sexual advantages. No need for lubricants or whatever if you're enjoying 'alone' time, therefore no way of ending up like Jim in American Pie when he grabbed the super glue instead!

First US input in this thread...uhh I'd say around 80% of the males I know are circumcised. It's more uncommon not to be circumcised in the US. All of my family members are circumcised and still any time a baby is born I know they have it done. In the US, I've heard comedians joke about uncircumcised penises and how a lot of women find them odd here.

Ā

Don't ask how I know so much about penises.

So what about the people you know that aren't? Were they teased?

And I thought you were from Argentina. :inquisitive:

My friend is from Virginia, and apparently all boys are circumcised there - it's just the way it is.

That would probably only be because women in the US are used to circumcised penises.

 and actually- my nephew is not done. BUT only because , she was so young at the time and unemployed, and the hospital required full payment BEFORE the procedure was to be done- over $300.00.

Sad it can always come down to the almighty dollar, even in a decision that will affect someone lifelong.

Well there you go, Liam won't be the only uncircumcised boy in the family if you choose not to.

Never seen so much penis talk before

Ā

but you know what I think it's important to know stuff like this, and our society should be more open to teaching this in school and talking about it openly. Female genital mutilation is talked about so openly and is such a big issue in the media, as it should be. But Male genital mutilation isn't talked about a lot.

Because it's accepted as being the norm.

Circumcision for health benefits is stupid, people can clean their penises these days everybody. We have soap.

Ā

I was talking to friends about this the other day and my friend seemed to think everyone that doesn't get circumcised is an inbred and will get deadly smegma diseases or something, I was like "wtf??"

Ā

But circumcised penises are prettier, like a lot.

Ā

edit: As for my opinion, I don't think it's good to mutilate your child's genitals without their consent. But it's been mentioned that circumcision later in life is like the worst thing ever, so I guess in general it's bad to do it. As sad as I am to say it, cuz penises with foreskins are like ew.

Ā

edit dos: Also, foreskins add like 4594759745x more pleasure to sex, so cutting them off is kind of a bitch move.

You would think the added pleasure for sex would be reason enough to not go messing with it.

Also, you're now making all the guys on here that aren't circumcised feel like there penises are ew. :whip:

That's really sad, but just as many children die in car crashes every year.

Ā

Ā

Ā

Ā

Like, nobody where I live gets circumcised. :|

Ā

Ā

I'm not really for or against it, but I think it should be the male's choice, not even his parents'.

What state are you in? It looks like it varies greatly from state to state. Perhaps your state is more 'evolved'.

Would you cut the labia of a little girl?

Ā

It represses sexual pleasure to an extent in the same way and can cause trauma, infection and even death.

.

Incidentally I am not accusing people who have done it as being evil, or anything like that, because it is very much part of American culture, but I hope one day it will stop.

Ā

On the other hand, I have spoken to people in the past and they have said that they made the decision because they didn't want their child to be different than the rest of the children. This is understandable, as for somebody to feel embarrassed about their genitals is not a good thing. The only problem I have with this view is that it is holding back the nation from moving on from such a barbaric activity.

Ā

It's a tough choice though, I'm just very aware of where I stand on it when I think about it logically.

Ā

The points on hygiene are best ignored. I'm clean as a whistle and I have a foreskin :p

In Canada, circumcision is no longer routinely done. It used to be, but they now charge $300 to deter people because it is considered purely aesthetic. Medical procedures that are deemed necessary here are paid for by the government unless considered for looks only aka. plastic surgery. Most adult males here are circumsized, but by the time my kids are grown, it will be the minority.

Ā

Oh, and some people use the excuse "we wanted our son to look the same as his dad", but that's kind of dumb because it's still a penis :dozey:

Thanks , Katie, for the time and thought put into your posts.

I have been reading up a bit on this, I noticed one thing, saying that female partners of men not circumcised, have a higher rate of cervical cancer !...as well as number of yeast infections:\

Future peer pressure for Liam is a concern, I dont want him teased in the locker room or have his girlfriends/wife thinking "eeeew" - being that he will be raised in the US.

This has mostly made me realize, maybe American mums just really dont put too much thought into it before automatically just giving permission to go ahead with the procedure, as it is done within 24 hours of birth usually here.

i think I have made my decision now and can feel ok with my choice. Thanks to all who gave input into this topic in a mature way. Thanks, Katie !

Yes AusKT, you're right, all of this is true. xxKels, I cant really add to what Braddock has said but I would just reiterate, Is potential peer pressure really worth the risk of complications, distress and possible death? I like to think children can be taught to ignore peer pressure.

Good luck Kels!

Which ever decision you make, just be proud that you actually gave it serious consideration. You have my respect for that.

Ā

Ā

:embarrassed: THANKS BRADDOCK !

Ive no idea how old you guys are, but I will admit those of you who posted surprised me in your penile knowledge regarding this issue :laugh3:;)

I would still be struggling to reach a decision if this thread had not been made:confused:

22.

My friend at uni had it done a few years ago and he got quite depressed by it. He told me he hoped I'd never had to have it (his was for medical reasons and forced, which is very very rare), and not for the pain reasons. Having it done in later life is very different than at birth though and I'm confident that most people who don't have a foreskin don't care about it since they are used to their penis the way that it is and wouldn't change it - likewise the other way around.

I'm pretty sure I was never even asked. Things like this take time to change - but you have to start somewhere.

Being the mother of an 8 year old boy I've spent a fair bit of time in boys change rooms during swimming lessons. Little boys just love to run around naked, and they're absolutely hopeless at drying and dressing themselves. :dozey:

I only know of 2 boys that are circumcised, and one of them was because his dad was. At this age I don't think there's any teasing going on of the boys that are - and hopefully there won't be.

You're welcome.

As for the yeast infections, I've never had one, it would have to be tied in with proper hygiene.

I completely understand about the peer pressure given where he will be raised.

I would say that it is just so routine that many mums probably wouldn't (I love how you used mums and not moms :P).

I'm glad that you took the time to give this serious thought rather than just follow the norm.

Whichever way you choose to go, ultimately I'm sure you will do what you feel is the best for Liam.

Im blessed- so far my Liam has been such a calm, sweet baby who is very patient with my fumbling around, trying to pretend I know what Im doing:D

:nice::baby:

And I say Mum because my own is English:)

Ā

We shall see just how long it goes before Liam turns :kid::devil::rolleyes5:

I cant wait really to see the tricks he comes up with !

I've never seen someone teased for it, no. I think most people in the US who don't get it done are of a different nationality, so they're different in a lot of ways. I live in Argentina, but I'm from Virginia, like your friend. Yea, your friend is right. It seems like almost every white male in the US had it done.

Ā

New Jersey lulz.

Ā

Not actually sure though, seeing as I don't go around asking my friends if they're circumcised. But I haven't really heard anything mentioned about it. No parents complaining, nothing at all.
