Cyber-bullying

Featured Replies

Clearly this is a problem that seems to be getting worse. With facebook, twitter, youtube, possibly even myspace... basically with any social network site it becomes very easy and quick to start rum ours and or spread hate.

So what is your stance on the topic and how do you think it should be handled?

I personally think that if something is posted that it should be removed immediately. And if it isn't removed or the problem persists I think the person should have their account disabled. Some people are definitely persistent, and there's no stop to them... I know because I had a friend that was made fun of from elementary school to pretty much high school... I'm still not completely sure why).

also this thread is created not just in light of the bullying of the gay teens, but also it has been a problem that i've seen on the news that's been a problem for a few years, though it seems over time it's been getting worse..

Also, there was this story that I just read about that really angers me, and these people are seriously evil

You hear all kinds of things on the news where feuding neighbours create Facebook pages about a person being a paedophile, and things like that. It's fucking awful and there should be stricter laws in place to prevent them. The thing I never understand is the lack of remorse which usually follows. Sometimes it's hard to concentrate on the beauty that surrounds us when you've got these fucktards ruining things.

People who insult others on the internet are useless pieces of shit, who should not be payed even the slightest bit of attention :policeman:

NOT myspace?!?! :shocked2:

Soz. :disappointed:

Every week there seems to be someone in our school being reported for cyberbullying usually it's something that's just a joke but they can be really offensive like what happened with those people in the news.

It's far too easy to get away with this. Seriously. And with places like FB and Twitter, they claim to have a 24/7 team working on these cases, but I've seen things stay up for days, even weeks before removal...

possibly even myspace...

I guess the term Hatespace is new to you??

...my Middle School Principle was cyber bullied.

yeah... never heard of that before

i just put it down at the time because i figured it's kind of dead...no one really seems to care about it anymore

We can't change internet behaviour, but we can change peoples self esteem?

The students from my school once made a hate video about this teacher from my school and put it up Youtube.

But that was years ago.

The internet is going to become alot more strict in the future because of arseholes like this.

You can't really MAKE the internet strict as it is.

You can't really MAKE the internet strict as it is.

The internet is changing. The way it is likely to be very different in a decade. Many believe it will become a much more capitalist place. Google are looking into changing the way the internet is run. Right now it is a fair playing field for everyone. I can access this site, just as fast as any other site. In the future however it is believed that websites and companies will have to pay money to get a better connection speed for people to use their site. Therefore smaller sites will be much slower to access, and the big sites with lots of advertising will be used more and more frequently as it will be easier. This way it will be a lot easier to control what more and more people see (for example imagine what it would be like if the fastest news site available was the Daily Mail). There will be a monopoly on the internet, much like there is in big business today and with the introduction of iphones etc, with their applications and one click access to places like facebook, people will become even lazier and more reliant on these larger websites. People are fighting Google (and another major company who I have forgotten the name of) in order to prevent this happening and to keep the internet a free and fair place.

If you can direct the majority of people to one place it will be easier to tighten the grip on people fucking around though, back to your point. How much of a difference it will make on bullying I do not know.

You can't really MAKE the internet strict as it is.

It may be hard to imagine but in the future the internet will be a wholey different experience. Im no expert but I predict big changes. When the internet was first created the laws, rules and regulations were less strict. Its a natural progession. Years from now perhaps the only way you can log on is by using the equivilent of a passport or government document that means you can be tracked to prevent online crimes? If you follow the news Its fast becoming a major world concern.

We are just at the beginning of the internet, it will be around for a very very long time.

That's why I'm moving to Iran, I want more internet control.

My nephew got cyber-bullied about a month ago, I think it's absolutely horrible. Honsetly, kids under 18 shouldn't have any of those kind of accounts because they can't handle that childish behavior. They take it seriously.

Has anyone heard of Formspring? I think its part of facebook :\ Basically people can set up an account and then others post questions anonymously. Its such an easy way for cowards to hurl abuse at someone by asking demeaning and often really horrible questions.

I've looked on some people's formsprings and they get asked some really mean things, it really is a form of cowardly cyber-bullying.

However its up to the person who sets up the account, personally I would never set up such a stupid thing, why would I want anonymous people asking me personal or degrading questions?

That whole Formspring thing is like, made for bullying.

That's easy to say for someone who is over 18.

Cyber bullying is horrible, I've been through it, so I should know. But honestly, I could take that. The only way for me to talk to the people that basically keep me alive, is on sites like Facebook.

Wouldn't really suck for me, because I'm old :awesome:

Probably so.

/edited previous post

But how could they enforce that? Anyone can lie about their age.

I just think it's so sad that age restrictions are needed. Most people under the age of 16 can handle social networking sites.
