Evolution vs. Creationism!

Featured Replies

I think most educated Christians know not to take the Bible literally. It's not supposed to be taken literally. I only know one Christian who actually believes that the devil made Eve eat the forbidden fruit etc.

I went to a Catholic elementary school and a Catholic high school, because I really liked the atmosphere, even though I'm not religious at all. Go figure. But something that I've noticed from going is that many people on the outside seriously have no idea what Catholicism is really about or what true Catholics really believe. I can't speak for other Christians, however...

So basically this thread is like Science vs Faith?

"TRUTH CAN NOT CONTRADICT TRUTH" - POPE LEO XIII

Tis true my friends. Gensis, while not to be taken literally, is a truth in the sense that GOD CREATED. THIS IS A TRUTH. Evolution is just what has been shaping us over time. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence to support evolution. EVOLUTION IS TRUTH.

Read in between the lines. Unless you are taking every word in the Bible literally (highly unorthadox, though that is how most Christians do it), there are no contradictions whatsoever

TRUTH CAN NOT CONTRADICT TRUTH

I have a problem with this part. How do you know this? Just wondering.

I think most educated Christians know not to take the Bible literally. It's not supposed to be taken literally. I only know one Christian who actually believes that the devil made Eve eat the forbidden fruit etc.

Then what should people decide should be taken literally and what shouldn't? And where does it say it shouldn't be taken literally? If a person is basing their views simply on the morals that a religious text teaches then this is more understandable, but morals have been taught long before the religions we know today came about. Those without religion have morals, at the same ratio as those with religion.

I wouldn't question the casual interest in a religion such as the Catholic church, were it not for the homophobia, self service (to a point that severely damages other peoples lives - preying on the poor and uneducated in order to dictate how they should live their lives and spread lies in the third world about topics such as condom use) and constant cover up of child rapes. Were it not for things such as these I would not care for people supporting such a religion casually, but unfortunately my own personal morals are too great.

Pious members of the church can be good people, to the same degree as all people of all faiths and those without, and so I am not attacking them but I think they should understand exactly what it is that they are supporting, particularly if it is in such a flippant manner.

If members of the church do not believe entirely in what their religion teaches (for example the homophobia), then I don't believe they should bother sticking by it. I think they should develop their own ideals instead of allowing many of the dogma's to be forced on them, or ignoring some of the more sinister teachings. Why on earth would somebody believe something so poisoned and negative, which restricts their freedom and attempts to fill them with guilt, if they know deep down that in their heart they disagree with a lot of what the religious texts teach?

Basically my rambling point is that if it is simply community and morals you require, then there are far better ways to achieve them than by following such a dangerous organisation. Develop your own ideals, believe in what you want to believe by all means (although if you are gong to enter debate regarding what you have decided, expect to be challenged, since this is a discussion), but don't follow something which encroaches in other peoples lives and expect people not to judge you for it.

I answered this question with the presumption that you do not believe that homosexuality is evil and that all practising homosexuals are going to hell, but please tell me if I'm wrong. I am confident that you don't believe that however.

Do the other major world religions get a look in here or is it basically Science vs Christian beliefs?

Evolution is a proven FACT. You do not need to believe it. I am intolerant to Creationism because it's wrong, its like somebody going around saying the Roman Empire never existed.

And please could everyone stop saying religion deserves respect, why does it? Its just a very old ideaology with a fictional man in the sky telling everyone what to do. Fuck religion, yeh im intolerant, so what.

Do the other major world religions get a look in here or is it basically Science vs Christian beliefs?

They will if people discuss them.

Which other ones would you like to see dismantled?

Christians are the most outspoken in the West, and their beliefs unfortunately affect the rest of us (see the Texas school board) if you want to discuss other religions we can :)

Exactly. Since there is no truth, there is nothing to contradict. Simple! :D

Of course I believe in evolution and most if not all things science throws up but it doesn't mean I'm an atheist! In many ways I believe in God but what God is I will never know. I don't associate myself with a religion so I can't call myself religious despite the fact I went to church when I was younger. The problem with most atheists and religious extremists is they abide by very strict views that you are either one or the other. There's no middle way with them. Many atheists I know are incredibly ignorant and believe that if you believe in God then you believe that the world was created in 6 days, Adam and Eve were the first humans on earth etc etc. That seriously pisses me off and merely displays their lack of intelligence to me. A lot of that is down to how the media portrays both arguments. Say on a debate show, there's two men. A militant creationist versus a militant atheist. Why is there no middle man?

p.s Also what gets me is people like Arwen Evenstar using the term 'Christian' rather freely as in 'all people who believe the world was created in 6 days'. That is simply wrong.

maybe because all religions want to be right the debate is difficult.

they have no time to think about God or supreme power over us. speak all in the name of God even the politicians when they go to war is dramatic.

Yo, leave the Elven Princess ALONE! It's not wrong, it's just a word we use a lot. So sue us. :dozey:

You are a deist by the sound of it, although I still disagree at least your position is debatable.

Christians are the most outspoken in the West, and their beliefs unfortunately affect the rest of us (see the Texas school board) if you want to discuss other religions we can :)

This is clearly an example of you using the term 'Christian' in a demeaning way. Now I see your point upon which there is still a bit too much orthodoxy but if we're going to be balanced here we have to look at the negatives and positives of what religion can bring. You tell me how Christianity somehow negatively impacts your lives. I believe that religion as a whole brings negativity with it but I also believe it has proved to have a positive impact upon the way we live our lives today.

Also why don't you accept religion as a way of how and what people are? We accept sexuality, race, ethnicity in people. So why not religious beliefs? I sense you seem irritated by it.
