#42 and the London homecoming shows

news_line.png

I note that on the X&Y tour, there were three "Big London Shows" at Earls Court on the 14th, 15th and 16th of December. Three years, an album and an EP later, here we are with three "Big London Shows" on exactly the same dates. Hometown shows around Christmas make perfect sense really. If it's supposed to be a time for getting together with family and friends and celebrating, then what better way could there be?

ext.jpg

This feel spreads further than the simple fact that much of the touring party is based here in London. The show itself has a family vibe through and through. The opening acts on all three nights have deep friendships and history with the band stretching way back. Having friends and family about them even extends to a guest appearance from Mr Simon Pegg. The man is obviously a star in his own right, but when you see the band beaming from ear to ear and cracking up as he adds harmonica to the C-Stage, you can see that he's here primarily because he's their mate.

His contribution on night one is solid, although it's clear the fact that he's standing in the spotlight in front of 18,000 people hasn't escaped his notice. The second night, he's positively on fire and appears to be loving every minute of it. By the third night he pretty much owns the place. Top fella.

Pegg.jpg

With hometown shows of course, comes complete and utter guest list meltdown. I am reliably informed that by the time the box office closed on the third night, the guest list count had exeeded twelve hundred over the three shows. That's enough folks to fill a decent sized theatre show. If you count on the fact that at least a quarter of those will have undoubtedly had phone numbers for either vicki and EJ, the band's PAs or Marguerite in production, you can pretty my imagine how many phone calls have been fielded beginning with "I just wanted to check.....".

You can bet that their phones will be well and truly off for the days off before Belfast! (that's if they haven't melted first). The guest list ranges through from old schoolfriends to A-list celebs to Mr Paul McGuinness (also known as "U2's Manager") to my Mum and Dad. I'm pretty sure that Ma and Pa #42 enjoyed it and I may finally have convinced them that I do have a proper job....

Obviously, the final piece of the puzzle in all of this is the crowd. I can say without hesitation that if you were there you can be justifiably proud of yourselves. London can be a tough place to play for any band, but it's been a real celebration and that's one hundred percent down to the energy that gets fed onto the stage when 18,000 people go berserk. Nice one folks!

#42 tells you about tour fatigue

http://coldplay.com/newsdetail.php?id=257

Tour Fatigue, Road-burn, Knackered-ness, "Ready for Bo-Bos", it's called many things, but all describe the same thing. I've shied away from describing some of the less enjoyable aspects of touring because - well, lets face it, the job we do is amazing and I can't even bear listening to myself moan about it, let alone imagine how little anyone else would care.

It is, however, an intrinsic part of the touring experience. Just as seaside summer holidays always smell strongly of sun-cream, so too is the entire touring experience often viewed through the soft focus lens of exhaustion. Timezones have a lot to answer for. So too does the fact that the working day produces a ninety minute adrenaline rush that ends around 11pm - making early nights rare, despite all best intentions.

Mix that in with the inevitable round of tour colds and you have an uphill struggle getting out of bed some days. Touring is a huge machine powered for the most part by extraordinary human effort. Every night at around 9pm, there is a show. This will go ahead regardless of how much anyone involved feels as though they've been run over by a truck (or 14 of them, in our current case). Taking time out to recover is not in the itinerary.

Brew.jpg

Touring is also a hugely social environment. There are just short of 100 people travelling with this particular circus. Myself, when I'm tired, I'm grumpy. I've been doing this long enough to know this, so I tend to pull myself inwards like a tortoise when I'm not at my best. I'd rather not inflict myself on anyone. In this environment though, that can be difficult. Every area in a venue is a communal space, so sitting on your own and wallowing isn't really an option.

Luckily, when one person is down, another will be up and the natural balance of the tour-vibe ecosystem is maintained. It only takes one person to say one thing that makes you smile, or to do something that makes you laugh uncontrollably to turn your day around completely. It sounds utterly cheesy to say that of course, but cliches at their simplest, are just oft-repeated truths - and this happens to be true.

A strange thing happens when you go beyond heavy tiredness though and that's the very distorted and strange world of sleep deprivation and complete exhaustion. Myself, I actually find this stage easier to deal with. Everything seems very slightly ridiculous and amusing for no apparent reason. Work days get boiled down from a huge mass of jobs to do to two simple priorities that are your only concern between opening your eyes in the morning and getting back to bed again:

1. What do I have to do to make the gig happen and not let anyone down?

2. How soon can I sleep?

The other thing that is reassuring about this feeling is that you pretty much know that your body will refuse to let you attempt anything with your next day off but collapsing and recovering. I can happily report that I got the tube home from the last O2 show and have spent little of the two days off that followed doing anything more strenuous than snoring.

I can't tell how long it's going to last, but I can honestly say I'm heading off to Belfast today feeling a good deal more alive than I have for some time after a good rest. The end (well, a break at least) is in sight. The London crowds were awesome and the Irish know a thing or two about having a good time, so I reckon we'll make it to Christmas just fine.

Roadie #42

Aww poor thing. I can't imagine what it's like to have your sleeping schedule all messed up like that

just when i thought school exams were hectic...Roadie #42 you're awesome!!!

Awww.... poor R#42.......... hopefully he got enough sleep to go through the next few gigs :nice:

Interview with Paul O'Brien (Lost? video contest winner)

December 22, 2008 3:41 pm

We find out more about the man behind the winning vid

news_line.png

Last week, Coldplay fan Paul O'Brien came to London to see the band at The O2, as his prize for winning the Lost? video competition. We gave him a shout to find out more about his triumphant video and his London trip.

Hi Paul. Congratulations on your win. How did you hear about the competition?

I heard about it through The Coldplay Messenger, the email newsletter.

What made you want to enter?

I'm a huge Coldplay fan! Almost to the point of being obsessive! But when I saw the details for the contest I thought I had to make the film. I thought the acoustic version of Lost? was a great base to start an idea from and I pretty much had 101 ideas from the very start.

How long have you been doing animation? Is it a hobby or a profession?

I'm actually a model maker and did a year of animation just recently. So it is both a hobby and a profession.

How did you come up with the idea for your Lost? video?

Listening to the song gave me lots of feelings, but mostly drew me towards the idea of people trying to find each other. I had played with the idea of a couple who had been forced apart, but then felt it was all a bit complex. Stop-Motion lends itself to simpler stories and I thought a dog wandering away from his owner was a lot less complicated, yet still could bring viewers the same kind of emotions.

How long did it take to make it?

I started work on the models pretty much as soon as the competition was announced as I knew the deadline was tight for what I wanted to achieve. The sets and characters took roughly two weeks to get ready and from that point the animation took probably another two weeks of sleepless nights! Everything went very well through the whole process, I always had it in the back of my mind that I didn't really have time to make mistakes!

Do you still have the models?

Yup, mostly all the models have gone up into the attic now except for Seamus who actually came to London for the trip! But yeah all the models would be ready to go for "Lost? Part Deux"!

What's this we've heard about a sizable Pink Floyd influence on the film?

Yeah, I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan. Pretty much the only two bands I listen to are Coldplay and Pink Floyd! While writing up the storyline I saw that there was a couple of things I could relate back to Pink Floyd and by the end of it I was having fun and ended up putting in a lot more references along the way! I'm really glad people noticed it. I also had read that Coldplay are Pink Floyd fans themselves so I thought it would all work well with the Coldplay references...

Were you pleased with the finished video? Did you have high hopes for it?

I was delighted with the way the video turned out and I hoped it might get shown on Coldplay's YouTube for maybe a day or so, but I never could have imagined that it would win the competition! There were some really great videos uploaded and I had almost given up hope when I saw the quality of them!

How did you feel when you found out you'd won?

My girlfriend actually rang me to tell me the news and I really just passed it off as a horrible prank... then I got online myself and realised it was true. It must have taken me two days to actually let myself believe that I would be jetting off to London to see the band! It really is the kind of thing that I could only dream of!

How was your the trip to London?

It was the most amazing night of my life! We were treated so well in London from the amazing hotel to the party before and after the show. As we were being shown to our seats I kept thinking "Okay, we're gonna be sitting here, these seats are great!" but the usher just kept walking all the way up to the front of the stage. I couldn't believe how lucky we were! It really was a night I'll never forget.

They showed your winning film to the 02 crowd. How was that?

Than was another dream come true. Seeing the video on the screens was one of the weirdest things ever! I'm guessing that about 20,000 people watched my film that night and it even got a great reception. It's all been very surreal.

So what's next for you?

Well, at the moment I'm working as a model maker but there's another film in the pipeline. Animation is something I love to do and I want to go on to make bigger and better films.

And what's next for Seamus the dog?!

Well after his trip to London he was exhausted, but he's had a nap in his kennel and he's ready to make a trip to Belfast on the 23rd! He's a big Coldplay fan too!
