A US university president has said he is "disturbed" that a psychology professor allowed a demonstration of a motorised sex toy in a lecture hall.

 

Morton Schapiro of Northwestern University called the decision to allow a naked woman to demonstrate use of the device last month "poor judgement".

 

About 100 students observed the proceedings following a lecture session for a class on human sexuality.

 

Attendance was voluntary and students had been warned what to expect.

 

On 21 February, psychology professor Michael Bailey held a lecture on sexual arousal, with a focus on certain aspects of female physiology, according to a statement he released on Wednesday.

 

Prof Bailey said another guest lecturer, Ken Melvoin-Berg, had proposed the demonstration and he could not think of a legitimate reason why the students should not have that opportunity in the name of inquiry.

 

"Student feedback for this event was uniformly positive," Prof Bailey said.

 

The demonstrator, Faith Kroll, told the Chicago Tribune she enjoyed the attention.

 

"I was more than happy to," she said. "We had fun with it. I'm an exhibitionist."

 

On Thursday, Mr Schapiro said in a statement it was in the nature of a university to teach and research controversial topics.

 

But he said the demonstration "represented extremely poor judgement on the part of our faculty member" and said he was "troubled and disappointed".

 

"I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary or in keeping with Northwestern University's academic mission," he said.

 

He promised an investigation and to clarify "what constitutes appropriate pedagogy".

With the fact it was voluntary, they were warned about what was going to take place and it was on the topic of what they were doing, I don't see the problem really. He should have checked with the university maybe, but I'm surprised they are against this.

It's because it's such an unorthodox thing to do for such a taboo topic.

I think they can handle it. But this definitely should have been cleared with the top levels of the university, if this lecturer went to the head of his school (Dept of a university) I'd expect the head of school to go above him, and so on. It's common sense, sex or stimulation in the work place is definitely taboo, and the most important thing is that the lecturer should have made it a little clearer why they really needed to do this, why they couldn't have just looked at a tape or make a tape and show it. Was it interactive? Did the students suggest techniques to heighten stimulation? It seems to have been done in a lecture hall so there's issues of hygiene and what steps they took, I'm guessing if the lecturer after that class weren't informed they wouldn't be very happy (Though personally I wouldn't care).

 

I don't think any class studying the biology of animals would find it absolutely necessary to drag 2 pigs into a class and watch them fuck, so as well as finding the problem of what's wrong with it, we need to weigh that against the necessity to do it, so until that's a bit clearer I'm not sure what the point of going to the extent of doing something that's taboo and risky.

But getting two animals to have sex is not the same as a person. If it was indeed interactive then it would be far more useful than a tape, and obviously more important to that class than a biology class to see two animals having sex in front of them.

I guarantee you someone somewhere could think of a valid reason to jerk off an animal in front of a room full, like how to stimulate it for a stronger ejaculation and stronger sperm (Which is true for humans and plenty of foreplay so I wonder if it's the same for animals) and what it seems to enjoy, oh hey what the hell am I talking about.

My friend is on Northwestern and he was at that class. He said there was nothing disturbing, and something that they all know how it works.

Okay the professor could have maybe talk to the university first but they would have said no, and I don't get how is this such a big deal.

There are bunch of things that dont need to be on the curriculum but they are.

 

I don't know what was the point of this. But I don't see how could it be harmful for anyone! Its a class on human sexuality, its not like the showed it in I dont know religion or math. People who enrolled into that class knew what is it about.

My analogy of 2 pigs fucking was an example of going to an extraordinary length for the purposes of learning, which is completely needless, and I see this the same way. In fact I think the lecturer who did it probably realised it would cause a fuss and it is taboo, but probably believed in some stupid principle point he had to prove, which is kind of bypassing the fact that it's actually necessary.

 

I'm sure if the topic of the lecture was boring and less controversial, he wouldn't have gone to such an extreme length to get hands-on (Literally) education as needing an real example right in front of the students.

I guess the main hypothetical point is that IF there was a point for doing this, we know the university wouldn't allow it, and why? Well that's kind of the critical thing, them not allowing it is another hypothetical because we'll never know what they would have done, but certainly in that situation the main point would be that it's desperately needed to prove a point or explore something, but that's not the case.

 

So if there was a point to this and if the university had said no, then we'd probably have an issue to discuss here.

A US university professor concluded a discussion of bondage and other sexual fetishes in his human sexuality class by having a woman take off all her clothes, climb on stage and graphically demonstrate the use of a sex toy, the school has acknowledged.

 

The demonstration took place on February 21 at the conclusion of psychology professor John Michael Bailey's class on human sexuality.

 

According to guest lecturer Ken Melvoin-Berg, after the students were told a couple would take part in a demonstration involving a sex toy, the students were warned about a half dozen times that "what was about to happen would be graphic".

 

With that, Jim Marcus and his fiancee, Faith Kroll, climbed on the stage in front of about 100 students and demonstrated the use of the motorised device with a phallic object attached to it, as students heard about issues such as safety and consent, Melvin-Berg said.

 

"It is probably something I will remember the rest of my life," said senior Justin Smith, 21, one of the students who stuck around voluntarily after class when students were told about what they were about to see.

 

"I can't say that about my Econ 202 class and the material that I learned there," Smith told The Chicago Tribune.

 

The university will pay several hundred dollars to Melvoin-Berg, the co-owner of Weird Chicago Tours, for the lecture.

 

He said neither Kroll nor Marcus - exhibitionists who are happy to have people watch them have sex - would be paid.

 

Melvoin-Berg said the demonstration was not planned, and Marcus said he and Kroll brought the device to show to the class but had not planned on giving a live display of how it works.

 

That changed, said Marcus, after the students finished watching a graphic video that he thought was unrealistic.

 

"It seems like a human sexuality class is a smart place to dispel some of the mistakes that we saw in the video," he said.

 

So they started dispelling.

 

"We were watching a video on sexual arousal," Smith said. "The main guy, Ken, said, 'Are you ready for the live sex show?' We were like, 'OK.'"

 

Kroll said she enjoyed the demonstration and Marcus said it was all designed not to titillate the students, but teach them.

 

And Bailey said he didn't know yet if he was sorry about the demonstration. But, he said: "I have no regrets concerning Northwestern students, who have demonstrated that they are open-minded grown-ups rather than fragile children."

 

Evanston police say it will be up to the school to determine if the demonstration violated any local ordinances.

 

Northwestern spokesman Alan Cubbage said no one has filed a police complaint.

 

"Northwestern University faculty members engage in teaching and research on a wide variety of topics, some of them controversial and some of at the leading edge of their respective disciplines," Cubbage told the Sun-Times.

 

"The university supports the efforts of its faculty to further the advancement of knowledge."
