March 24, 201115 yr I was just curious about compulsory exam subjects in other places. Do you have them in your country? and if so which ones? Here you have to do english, maths and irish until you leave high school and a foreign language is highly advised. You also have to do history and geography up until the age of 15/16. And in some schools religion as an exam subject is compulsory until 15/16 too. Oh and did you ever feel like they were holding you back?
March 24, 201115 yr 4 years of english, math, science, and history 1 year of foreign language (Chinese, German, French, and Spanish offered) 1 year of fine art (music/art) 1 year of business 1 year of computer
March 24, 201115 yr English is the only subject that you have to study for 4 years here. Everything else you just need to study for 2-3 years (although most study math, science, and history for 4 years to have a better shot of getting into college). PE is also required for two years in high school, as well as a few electives (including a foreign language) which you can choose.
March 24, 201115 yr Author I always found it odd how science is not compulsory here actually  It's a lot more useful then being able to speak Irish. I like how fine art is compulsory :wacky:
March 24, 201115 yr Oh, geez. I'm not really sure. At least 3 years of the main subjects (math, science, history, english), 4 is preferred. :uhoh: I think. 2 years of a foreign language. Our school only offers Spanish and French. 1 year of music or art. 1/2 year business/finance/mandatory course thing. And phys. ed. is required every year. I think the only thing that holds us back is the new schedules we have this year; lunches are mandatory now, when before we could have more classes instead. ...:uhoh:
March 24, 201115 yr Author You "have" to do P.E here for 4 years...but it's not graded or anything so not doing doesn't affect your marks in any way. You probably just get a bad note from the P.E teacher in your report.
March 24, 201115 yr Author Oh yeah, and PE is mandatory all 4 years. :shifty: Do you get graded or what in P.E? D:
March 24, 201115 yr Maths English Literature P.E History are mandatory for everyone until graduation and then you have, depending on the orientation you choose, 1 or more years of Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Philosophy plus the specific subjects you have according to your course of studies. You can't really "choose" the rest of the subjects, you get to choose a course of studies or orientations (social sciences, economic/business, natural sciences, art, technical courses) You choose the orientaton to follow and then have to deal with the subjects within that orientation, which vary a lot. That is, you can't choose what language to study or if if you want to study biology rather than chemistry.
March 24, 201115 yr You "have" to do P.E here for 4 years...but it's not graded or anything so not doing doesn't affect your marks in any way. You probably just get a bad note from the P.E teacher in your report. :surprised: really? wow, I wish it was like that here! I have always sucked at it
March 24, 201115 yr German, French, Mathematics, Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), Geography, History, P.E., R.E., Fine Arts, Cooking, Textiles English wasn't compulsory but we had to do Textiles and Cooking. I didn't think they were holding me back really. I however, feel that's it's rather unfair that we had to do 9 subjects for A Level. Having gone to school in Switzerland turned out to be a massive disadvantage when applying for British universities.
March 24, 201115 yr Textiles and cooking? I've never heard of those as mandatory anywhere.
March 24, 201115 yr Three years of English, history, math, and science, if you plan on going to a four-year college. Oh, and PE and health. And a fine arts class. And two years of a foreign language. Depending on what you're majoring in during high school and what kind of school you're going to after high school, sometimes they only require three years of science.
March 24, 201115 yr Depends on the school you go to here. French is not compulsory. (compulsory until the eighth grade) Atleast one Math and English must be taken. (All four years) ICT (Computers) is compulsory until tenth grade. (First two years) History/Geography until eleventh grade are compulsory. (First three years) And if you go to a religious school Religion class must be taken. (All four years) Also Phsy Ed and Health is compulsory until graduation. Everything varies from province to province though. And yes ! I love history and my school does not offer it in grade twelve or even geography.
March 24, 201115 yr 4 Years of English 2 Years of history+Principles of Democracy and Economics(senior yr) 2 Years of Math(4 recommended) 2 Years of Science(3 recommended) 2 Years of P.E. 2 Years of a Foreign Language (3 recommended) 1 Year of a Visual and Performing Arts class 1/2 Year of Computer Literacy
March 24, 201115 yr Maths English Science and religious studies :blank: and because it was a technology school we had to choose a design technology based subject  either textiles, graphics, cooking or woodwork. oh and PE, however none of us did anything in that lesson other than get changed and sit on the field
March 24, 201115 yr In my country, you have to do... Maths until Year 11, where you have to do it for at least a semester. Same applies for English and Science. Some sort of arts subject (music/drama/art) until Year 9. Geography or History until Year 10, where you have to do it for a semester. Same goes for sports. Oddly enough, our state is the only state in Australia that doesn't make English compulsory during Year 12.
March 24, 201115 yr Arabic, French, English, maths, biology, physics, chemistry, philosophy, geography, history, civics, sports, religious studies are all mandatory during all 4 years of high school. 3 years of computer, theater and translation. 2 or 3 years of economy and sociology.

March 24, 201115 yr 4 years of english, math, science, and history 1 year of foreign language (Chinese, German, French, and Spanish offered) 1 year of fine art (music/art) 1 year of business 1 year of computer Your school offers Chinese? That's hardcore! Gosh. I'm a 2008 graduate. I don't remember all that nonsense. I feel old now. :disappointed: I do remember that because I was in band, I didn't have to take PE.
March 24, 201115 yr We have 5 years of high school for the first 2 years you have to do all subjects and there's no choice other than whether you want to do French or Spanish. In third year you have to choose 2 out of Food, Textiles, Graphics or Design Technology. In fourth and fifth year you start GCSE, these are compulsory then: . Science (or you could take triple science instead, which is what I did) . English . Maths . ICT . P.E(though not graded) . Religious studies . Citizenship . PSCHE (Personal, Social,Citizenship, Health Education... Not much point to it it's just the government's way of trying to stop teen pregnancies, drug problems etc.)
March 24, 201115 yr we have 8 years of "basic school" (like elementary and preparatory) and 4 years of high school. during the first two years I had - Hystory - Language (spanish) - English - Biology - Chemistry - Sports - Physics - Philosophy - Math - religious studies even though that was not compulsory) during the last two years we had to choose one area so for example I added these subjects to my schedule - advanced chemistry - advanced biology - advanced english (just related to biology, it sucked really) - advanced physics - advanced math none of this were helpful for school since I'm studying sociology
