June 6, 201115 yr I've always found that they are pretty soft lyrically, they don't really take the risks of calling out the government, corporations, etc. about social issues.

I still do not know how Bono has to lick the boots to Buch. But I imagine the hunger is even more dramatic

It's got a certain "protest" vibe going - mainly anti-war with: "I don't want to be a soldier, who the captain of some sinking ship would stow far below" "And if you love me, why did you let me go?" here's also: "It was a long and dark december when the banks became cathedrals and a fox became God" - some (myself included) see that last line as a stab against the Fox Network, a pretty right-winged, conservative channel in the US. China banned the album Parachutes because of Spies, which the band thought was weird. Depends on your interpretation of the song. In any case, political or social-themed songs aren't really what they're known for. Edit: I'm not sure I agree, but some say Twisted Logic has a certain environmental theme to it, because of how humans are destroying the Earth. "Tonight, rivers will run dry, not for the first time, rivers will run..." "Hundreds of years in the future, there could be computers, looking for life on Earth". "Don't fight for the wrong side, say what you feel like". "Created, then drilled and invaded. If somebody made it, someone will mess it up. You are not wrong to ask who does this belong to, it belongs to all of us..." It does seem to have somewhat of a liberal, ecological, we-need-more-regulations message. In the end it depends on your interpretation of the songs.
June 6, 201115 yr It's never blunt in their lyrics but their are obscure digs in their. Violet Hill for example 'When the future's architectured, by a carnival of idiots on show' Always feel that's quite similar to these lyrics in Glass of Water 'Television selling plastic figurines of leaders saying nothing at all' So just an annoyance at how the media has become so important to politicians and world leaders in portraying their image around the world. Blame that crook JFK for starting that I say.
June 6, 201115 yr Last year in Western Civ we had to write an essay linking song lyrics to different events throughout the history of western civilizations. I chose Violet Hill and linked it to Robespierre's reign of terror, Stalin's dictatorship, and a couple other things that I already forget. So if you are including past events in whatever this is for, Violet Hill is a really good song to use. I was the first person in the history of that course to ace the essay! :)
