Finally picked up Rolling Stone. Wanted to get Mojo to, but it cost more than an album would!

  • Lol I haven't been here in 5 years but I decided to pop my head back in for some nostalgia. Seems like this was my last post so here's an update... I finally saw Radiohead live in Manchester in 2017 a

um, ok. so i just found a radiohead TEXTBOOK.

its a collection of scholarly or otherwise quite reputible articles and essays written about radiohead in general. my eyes did a double-take when i saw it and i bought it immediately. i have yet to start reading it, but this kind of made my life.

i want to take the class where they use it!

I expect you to write a 10 page double spaced essay summarizing the book by next Monday.

^Psh! Double spaced?? I need more material that that.

Okay single spaced. And no diagrams!

^if i had the time, i SO would!! 10 pages would be easy on a subject like radiohead.

currently i'm reading the forward, but i'm distracted by the US super tuesday primary results on CNN, so its not going to be a productive radiohead night.

Okay single spaced. And no diagrams!

b-but mr. briggins, there are so many artwork samples in the book! cant i just include one or two in my report? :laugh3:

Well I"m going to go study for an hour or so. I expect a report when I come back.

I love Jonny's t-shirts. why a better picture. that looks pretty clear to me

you shuold put some pics in teh thom thread.

i just found this extremely long dissertation on radiohead. i plan to read it sometime, actually.

i'm planning to major in pop culture and/or mass media, so this stuff fascinates me :D. and i love that a (brilliant) rock band can be considered "academic" enough to write scholarly articles and dissertations on.

woo I want to write a dissertation of Radiohead, too! I've been thinking that I want to study popular culture, especially music in university.

i know i've been starting to treat this thread as a "random radiohead thoughts" thread, but i can't resist sharing this interesting thing:

i have to read a book called we by yevgeny zamyatin for my russian class. it's much like orwell's 1984, if you know that, and its all about this freakish futuristic civilization completely without personal freedom. the whole time i've been reading it i've been thinking it's kind of radioheadish in the way its written, very abstract with unusual images, and the style just reminds me a lot of the lyrics and themes in kid A, amnesiac, and hail to the thief. but what really got me today is that i came across the phrases "everything in its right place," "morning bell," and "knives out" while reading! i'm seriously beginning to wonder if this had concrete influence on the radiohead albums, but google searches are yielding nothing.

i think 1984 had some influence on Thom's songs, but i'm not really sure ... there was a thread about it on atease...

Mo (user-burningmonk) had told me couple of days ago that George Orwell's 1984 had the word '2+2=5' in it.. and the song Optimistic references another of his books, called Animal Farm. So yep, I guess that these sort of books had -in your words- a concrete influence on their albums. I will be soon reading that book (1984) and I really can't wait!!!

Btw, I didn't hear of We before. Hmm, I'm gonna google it now.

----

@Ella: Oh man, you're killing me with all of these pictures!! :wideeyed:

yeah, i've heard about the connections/references to 1984 (2+2=5 does appear in there) because its a much better known book, but we is like the precursor to that book, and apparently orwell was really influenced by we when writing 1984. i just found those exact phrases and the whole radioheadish vibe i got from the book to be quite interesting. maybe we just dont hear about the connections with we because its not as widely read?

or maybe its just a huge coincidence.

George Orwell is my hero!! I loved Animal Farm and 1984!!!

but that dissertation!!!!!!!!!!!!! 188 freaking pages!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!? :o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o

and oof, it's sooo boring!!

Might not be Radioheads influence of George Orwell but paying homage to Pink Floyd's animals album.
