Hurricane Irene: Emergency declared in six US states

Featured Replies

are the media scare-mongering? or are they taking a reasonable approach?

they've already said that if you need to evacuate, its too late once the wind & rain starts. so if they can't accurately predict how quickly the intensity of the storm will dissipate, surely the sensible thing to do is to warn the people in its path of the worst case scenario so they can make a decision about what they want to do?

if they said, don't worry, it'll downgrade to a tropical storm and then it rolled up as a Cat 2, they'd be slammed even more.

Irene is passing near me only late at night tonight and it's already raining like the freaking apocalypse right now.

I mean, I know people are closer to it than this, and are used to these things and stuff. But I live in CANADA, not the south of the USA, we're used to big blizzards, not hurricanes or tropical storms.

I'm still freaking out, cause I have family and friends who live much closer to where the eye of the storm will pass and there isn't any evacuation so far in these places and uigjieurghg I don't want them hurt.

Oh and the medias are pretty down to earth here, no scare or anything. Some are following the progression of it in a special case o ntheir websites, to inform people, but it's not exagerated or written in a way to freak people out.

looking at the map the eye pretty much passed directly over us. But now honestly it's fine. I went outside. The rain has stopped, it's just slighty windy. To be honest it doesn't really seem like there even was a hurricane. Just like a regular heavy rain storm we sometimes get. No damage was done, just a little bit of flooding in our basement... but that's normal with a lot of rain.

I hope you'll be okay Marie! At least the storm is breaking up, but there's still a lot of rain.

oh my, I'm glad you're okay Mike  I guess I will be fine, just worried about these other people as I said. :/ thank you though

Thanks!

Yeah I know... I'm sure they'll be fine, and I hope they will be. Just be sure to secure things down. Like I said the good thing is the storm is not as strong as it was before. Stay safe

Text-TV in Denmark (DR1 and TV2), Sweden (SVT) and Germany (ZDFtext)

An "extremely dangerous" storm surge was threatening to raise the water level by up to 2.5m in coastal areas from Virginia to Massachusetts - according to USA's National Hurricane Center (NHC) which also warned of local tornadoes in New York's quarters Brooklyn and Queens. 125 to 250 mm of rain was expected - locally even 380 mm of rain.

The capital WASHINGTON had more than 200m of rain, but has not suffered substantial damage according to Reuters (news agency). Some bridges have been closed, but the airports remained open.

The Danish meteorologist Tanev explained what happened. He had learned (by reading) that the tide in New York was falling at the same time as the storm surge should come - they somehow offset each other meaning that this incident was by far not so bad as feared.

The costs in relation to the damage might total up to 12 billion dollars.

65 million people were affected by Irene from Washington to Boston.

The weakened tropical storm is now heading for Canada.

The hurricane - IRENE with a range / radius of 800 km - has been downgraded to a tropical storm with wind speeds of 29 m per second

Flooding in lower-lying parts of New York

2m flooding flooding in some parts of Manhattan

14 people dead

Over 4 million households and shops/businesses are without power / electricity in Virginia, South and North Carolina plus in Maryland

the storm was over 600 mi wide!!! Its insane.. we are still feeling the tropical storm winds here in NY. The worst of it was over this morning... lost power for about 7 hrs but I'm back!... for now.

if these winds keep up... :uhoh: I might be down for the count again. lol

^ I am glad that you are back. And I understand that it was by far not as bad as feared.

Way to be a smartass.

And we were far from the eye of the storm, but when taking a trip across a few towns to drop my dog off with a kennel, we were detoured at every turn. What was a 45 minute drive turned into an hour and a half drive because we had to go on every windy back road which even then were half blocked off. I counted over 20 power lines down (most with trees over them, some were completely snapped and sparking), and another 10-12 communication lines down. Then there were spots where you couldn't distinguish the lake from the road.

In the middle of main street in the biggest nearby town, the whole river flooded and was crossing the street!

Luckily, we only had a few branches down, not even a whole tree. But in some ares, even just down the road a bit, there is some serious damage. I saw one shed flattened like a pancake beneath a 4-foot wide tree.

seriously... what Megalomania (I don't know your name) said.

I mean I am fine and was lucky. but I have a cousin who's home got completely flooded and it ruined everything... and also my uncle has (last i heard) water right up to his door and probably will continue to flood and ruin his house.

So maybe you should think about posting that kind of icon in response to someone elses post before doing so. Yeah maybe some people like myself weren't really effected by the storm, but I personally know a lot of people that were, and it pisses me off to see you post something like that.

You're not seeing what I meant. That smiley was in response to someone saying it wasn't as bad as everybody thought it was. I am truly sorry for your cousin, but the news was projecting it as if everyone across the east coast was going to be in the same situation.

yeah well of course with any storm some people will be more affected than others.

Also it was because of the news and their local law enforcement that they decided to leave their homes.

I think it'd be better to be over-prepared or "over-hype" a storm even to people that might not be affected rather than down play it and have people carry on with their daily life activities.

...and again I apologize if I offended anybody, I was just expressing the fact that it wasn't as bad as everybody thought it was. Does this mean nobody had damage to their house? No. It just means that as many people aren't in those situations and my thoughts go out to anyone who is or has relations to someone who is.

Nobody could predict who would be affected and who wouldn't, so it's still better to assume everyone will be affected and to warn everyone.

Well we're a bit to late for that.

Uhm, no, we're not. Everyone was warned but you made it all out to be just the media hype.

exactly... better to be overprepared than underprepared.

I'm Christina. :nice:

I'm sorry about your cousin and uncle, I know a lot of my friends' houses were flooded too. The storm drains just couldn't handle all the water. :\

And agreed, next time let's throw you into the situation Jack- let your house flood so badly you're forced to live in a neighbor's trailer like my friend is doing now and then see what sort of reaction you have to it. I doubt it would be anything like the pretentious attitude you have now.

yeah well of course with any storm some people will be more affected than others.

Exactly, I was texting my friend and I found out that two streets that she's on (she lives on a corner) are blocked off, effectively trapping her in her house, due to flooding. On top of that her neighbors across the street have a wire down in front of their house, and it's sparking and extremely dangerous so they're all stuck in their houses until it can be fixed. It probably won't get fixed for another 24 hours at least, because just in my small town of 1.9 square miles of land and .3 square miles of lake, population ~3k, I counted 4 roads closed and over 50 trees fallen in the way.

...and again I apologize if I offended anybody, I was just expressing the fact that it wasn't as bad as everybody thought it was. Does this mean nobody had damage to their house? No. It just means that as many people aren't in those situations and my thoughts go out to anyone who is or has relations to someone who is.

Yes, being stranded in your house which is now part of the lake you lived on is definitely not "as bad as everyone thought it was".

You certainly weren't very sympathetic with your "" earlier.

Uhm, no, we're not. Everyone was warned but you made it all out to be just the media hype.

Ugh, I mean that we can't warn anybody now because it's over. C'mon guys stop taking everything I say as an opportunity to go off on me.

But it's not over. My friend Marie's town is being flooded as we speak. Good that they were warned by the media.

And if you're coming into a thread coming over that aggressive and ignorant (which I'm not saying you are, but you certainly made yourself look that way), then you really don't have to be surprised if people "go off on you".

Ugh, I mean that we can't warn anybody now because it's over. C'mon guys stop taking everything I say as an opportunity to go off on me.

well people are going to "go off" on you because that whole whistle post which was in poor taste. When it comes to peoples safety for a storm there's no need to make it seem the media has over-hyped it.

Yeah perhaps it wasn't as strong of a storm as a category 5 storm, but for NY and the north east it was a big deal considering we've never had a storm like this before.

Perhaps if you lived here and understood the context you would understand better.

yeah... I mean for my uncle last I heard they said the water hasn't even crested so who knows what the situation is on how flooded they are.

I hate it when I write a huge post and it gets lost in the previous page.

And I completely agree with Imke.

Jack, you're the one that keeps coming back to this thread and saying things that will obviously upset people. So don't go pointing fingers at us

Nobody listens to what I say. I apologized and sent my thoughts out to people affected by the storm. This is the only point I've been trying to make.

IT WAS NOT AS BAD AS THE NEWS MADE IT OUT TO BE.

Please only quote this post and extract everything I say in it. I understand that there were people affected by the storm and am sympathetic. But, the damage is nowhere near how much there was supposed to be. That's all I'm trying to say. I'm not angry or ignorant or non-caring or insensitive to people who may be without a house right now. I've listened to what you all have to say please just listen to me this one time. My only point is that it was supposed to be a lot worse. That's it. The smiley was in reaction to someone saying exactly that and again I apologize if I offended anyone with it.
