Hurricane Irene: Emergency declared in six US states

Featured Replies

Well, obviously the fear factor sells airtime, gets people to watch, and it's hyped at time, true. But there will no doubt be flooding, since things are so low and with so much hard surfaces today, the water will build up in places - plus the storm surge. And tornadoes are spawned inside hurricanes, which can blow things apart like so many tinker toys thrown to the wind. Anyhow, must be getting closer to Jersey by now!! I can see the windsurfers lining up on the beach as we speak!:P (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Yup, I definitely want attention, that's it. Hey guess what, when it hits where I am at will be a category one. You wanna know why people are scared? Because the news wants them to be scared. The news has brain washed everybody to think that this is the end of the world, and guess what you keep watching the news which is what they want. Hurricane Hazel, please. When the rain is up to my roof you guys can say I told you so. That ark offer is still up for grabs you guys. I know I said it would be my last post but we all knew that wasn't gonna happen.

ARE YOU AFRAID YET? THEY WANT YOU TO BE, IT WILL KEEP YOU COMING BACK. YOU ARE A LOYAL CUSTOMER

ARE YOU AFRAID YET? YOU SHOULD BE

TUNE IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN, TUNE OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, GOODBYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYE, GOODNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT

THEY'RE BUUUUUUUUUYING YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU, WITH FEAAAAAAAAAAAR AND LIIIIIIIIIIIIIES

TURN IT OFF UNTIL IT'S RIGHT, THAT'S THE NEWS, THAT'S ALL, GOODNIGHT

TURN IT OFF UNTIL IT'S RIGHT, THAT'S THE NEWS, THAT'S ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Thank you! Right now some news reporter is talking about how this is affecting people with high blood pressure. You want to tell me what those two things have to with each other? And I just realized that you're being sarcastic but what you thought was sarcasm is spot on. The news wants to scare you. Do they want you to die? No. But they do want to get you all worked up. And I didn't mean I was at the shore today, I meant a couple of days ago.

Yes, because if they didn't get people worked up they would sit at home and do nothing instead of taking smart precautions against a dangerous storm.

I don't see what your problem is, but you really need to leave people alone.

If they feel more comfortable taking every precaution to make sure they're safe, there's no problem with that! It's like you're angry at the fact that some people actually value their safety. . .

pfft, safety schmafety, that's what i say

yes people in the news use fear tactics, but it's still a major storm. ESPECIALLY for the North East. I mean we haven't experienced a storm or hurricane like this in decades. Is it a super strong storm? no. I mean it looks as though it's weakening, though who knows what will happen if it goes off shore. and back to sea.

There will definitely be flooding and damage. I mean before today the ground is already damp because we've gotten a lot of rain. Also in the past, storms (not nearly as strong as this one) have caused a lot of flooding. Also we've had storms with wind that has knocked down a bunch of trees in the past and blocked off roads. So I think it's understandable for people to be worried or for them to talk about it. Also in some sense it's better to get people scared and have them prepare well ahead of time then make the storm out to be nothing big and it causes a lot of damage.

leave people alone haha alright. you know i dont see what everybody's problem is. You guys are not letting me share my opinion and its like the second someone steps out of line and doesnt think what everyone else thinks they get attacked. Have i ever offended anybody before? No. Honestly i dont think i offended anybody today. Can you find one thing that ive said to personally hurt someone? because if you can i will be more than happy to apologize. if you know me i'm always in good spirits on the forums. I'm just voicing what i think. Yes the news wants you to be scared. I'm not gonna back off that point. Some how i became everybody's target because of that. why don't you just throw me in the books with coldplayer1317? I mean at no time today have i been angry as you guys seem to think i have been. I've been in a great mood all day in fact. I offered for people to let it go and get back to coldplay but everyone just wants to keep accusing me of being angry. That's all i have to say for this thread and if you guys would like to forget everything here and get back to the mylo xyloto forum i would be more than happy to discuss that with you. After all Coldplay is why we're all here in the first place. :)

It is good to take precautions. And then, windows boarded up, sandbags piled high, emergency generator tested and ready, flashlights charged, spam stocked and ready, then... get that surf board out and PARTY!! :laugh3: Hm, I suppose the news' talking heads and shock music does get some people moving, true. But still, I think since it is so hyped, it can be Orwellian and not calmly rational as well. It does present an opportunity to control people, something I find offensive as well. I wish the news departments were severed from the corporate profit machine as they were in the old days of Reasoner, Mudd, Rather, and Cronkite. Just the facts, none of the sales adrenaline. What we need is to know the plain truth.

Why is everyone able to say what I want to perfectly, and when I say it it makes no sense? :P

But yeah, exactly. I mean just recently this summer we've had a week where it just didn't stop raining, with a lot of flooding and damage. And now were getting more rain (anywhere from 2-12 inches I've heard) that will do even more damage.

Yes, you've voiced your opinion. You find it absolutely stupid to prepare for the first huge storm of the hurricane season, considering the northeast has never been very ready to handle a hurricane. You would rather make sarcastic comments and make fun of anyone who has remotely prepared for the worst of the storm.

Who the hell is coldplay1317? :wtf:

And why would we "get back to coldplay", this is the news section, where we do this thing called talking about the news?

Besides, it's not like the non-Coldplay sections are a horrible place where nobody should stay. I don't frequent any Coldplay related section and I'm not exactly the devil.

You are being a drama queen.

But that electric police scooter is just wayy cool! Anyhow, batten down the hatches and buckle the seat belts, should be an exciting storm! What else can we do - deal with what comes, best as one can. Help a neighbor in need, an the scouts say, Be Prepared. :fingersx:

I agree the media IS exaggerating , I mean they keep showing imagery of catastrophic events that are results from either the end of the world, or major hurricanes. lol. I guess like someone said, in the case of a storm, it could at least encourage people to stay indoors and be safe that would otherwise brush it off.

Just let it go. I've tried to end the conversation but you guys just keep pressing me. Just talk about the hurricane with everybody else and forget about the points I've tried to make. I realize that you guys strongly disagree with me and some of you feel that I've been offensive so I've tried to removed myself from the thread. What else would you like me to do? I'm trying to let it go but you're not letting me.

PS - If you followed LP5 closely you'd know who Coldplayer1317 was. Before everyone jumps on that comment as offensive, I'm just saying that he had a lot of people paying attention to his false information in the threads leading up to MX.

mfw this is the third time you've said you'll leave this thread.

I don't mind when others have a different opinion, but when you start making sarcastic comments about people who are very smartly preparing for a dangerous storm, that's too far.

but whatever, back on topic.

It's just a steady rain right now, as it has been for the past 2 hours or so. the wind's picking up though

Ok I apologize if I took things too far and I know I said I'd leave the thread but I just had some extra things to say.

Must you have the last word always?

You didn't offend me at all, never took it that way, I just think maybe we should agree to disagree and realize I was right:lol:

Meanwhile, the tiny ship was tossed, and if not for the courage of the fearless crew, the minnow would be lost. I guess there's an actual Hurricane barreling down the East Coast, heaven knows if the cities will handle all that water! We shall see.. or sea..

^Sea or No Sea - that is the question

Fingers crossed that the slowing of hurricane Irene will have the effect that the damage will not be so bad.

maybe.. hitting land does tend to take the power level down a few notches.
