Up with the birds - a duet with Leonard Cohen?

Up with the birds - a duet with Laonard Cohen?

Chris said: "We're hungry and very fired up. In five years we'll be in our late 30s. You have to have your best work done by then. I'm trying to make sure there are three songs that start with the same letter. On the last album it was L. It might be U this time. One of them is Up With The Birds. It might be a duet, but we don't know who with yet."

Leonard Cohen has a song called 'Bird On The Wire'. Maybe they sampled this. It's a beautiful song really. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp18sKXaFlE]Leonard Cohen. Bird on a Wire. - YouTube[/ame]

This is, what I'm curious about: Is it a duet or just a sample?

On the PRS it says there are samples featured in the song, but it doesn't say where the samples are from. Leonard Cohen is credited as a writer on the song so we assume the samples are from one of his songs. Similar to how Peter Allen was credited on ETIAW because of the sample. In the past Chris has said that he wanted the song to be a duet. By duet he may mean that it features vocals from an existing song.

I would absolutely love a duet with Leonard Cohen.

I'm calling it now: Up With The Birds features THE PIERCES!!!!

The BBC did an article a while back about them doing a track together and about Tim Wheeler with the guitar bits he did with them!!!

Not really a fan of collabs in general, so hopefully no Leonard Cohen or whoever.

Judging from the position of the title on this picture, Up With The Birds won't be a full, independent song. I guess it's a short, intense closing track like The Escapist instead.

Not a fan of samples, but I'll wait to hear it. And I think the duet idea was dropped.

Didn't got the "position" thing, but yes it could be a short closing song. Do you think The Escapist is intense???

Well, the title Up With The Birds is positioned in such a way that it looks part of Don't Let It Break Your Heart. And about The Escapist, yeah I consider it as a very intense song! Not because it sounds agressive or 'fierce', but because it's so mysterious and haunting.

^ If this song is like The Escapist, I will love it.

Sample is more likely than an actual duet. They would've announced that with the tracklisting I guess, plus I don't think they would put a collaboration as a closing track.

:nod: Same here. For some reason, I don't think Chris' voice sounds good paired with anyone outside Coldplay (although it sounds amazing with Will, Guy, Jonny, or all of them together . . . I guess the guys just have really good chemistry or something :P )

And if Up With The Birds sounds even remotely like The Escapist I'm going to love it :wacky:

I'd love to hear a duet with Thom Yorke, Tom Chaplin or Brandon Flowers :)

Haha Chris isnt that crazy to do a duet with Yorke himself.

Yorke will blow chris away with he's musical abbillitaties.

Coldplay=The Mainstream copycat of Radiohead.

They already have a duet with Rihanna, it would surprise me if they did 2 duets on the same album. The PRS says that samples are used and that Leonard Cohen is a writer, so I'm betting that Cohen's vocals will be incorporated into Up With The Birds from one of his existing songs. So it's not strictly a duet but it does feature Cohen's vocals.

according to the spanish review posted here on the forum, they sampled "Anthem" by Leonard Cohen:

and also "Driven by You" by Brain May

:inquisitive::inquisitive::inquisitive:

It's not a sample.

They used Cohen's lyrics.

Brian May isn't credited as a writer so I think the Spanish reviewer saw some similarities between the songs and assumed that it had a sample. Same as where they say that Takk is sampled on Princess of China. Or maybe Coldplay will have another couple of lawsuits on their hands...
