October 4, 201115 yr i dont know if everybody is aware of this, but i think it is rather interesting. October 4, 201115 yr I don't think this is true. The reason why their mics and instruments were cut was because like Chris said before he played UATW, they didn't plan on doing an encore. So the Letterman crew turned everything off after the last song. The audience didn't want to leave and wanted an encore, which is why Chris came back out and said something like... We're sorry, we didn't prepare for an encore because we thought that you New Yorkers would be dying to catch a cab after the last song. And then they ended up playing UATW.

Looking back over the footage again, it's very clear that they weren't "told to leave" or "kicked off". The reason their equipment was turned off was because they finished their setlist and hadn't told the Letterman crew they were doing an encore. Some idiot at the Sun probably saw this and thought it meant they were kicked off. And that's that.
