The reason why their mics and instruments were cut was because like Chris said before he played UATW, they didn't plan on doing an encore. So the Letterman crew turned everything off after the last song. The audience didn't want to leave and wanted an encore, which is why Chris came back out and said something like... We're sorry, we didn't prepare for an encore because we thought that you New Yorkers would be dying to catch a cab after the last song. And then they ended up playing UATW.
