Prague / PHOTO GALLERY / - Visit the biggest and greatest visual experience of the year, these two superlatives apply to the Coldplay concert on Sunday at the stadium - the home of football club Slavia in Prague’s Vršovice district. The British "not long ago alternative" band played here the fourth of this year's major open-air concerts after Metallica, Bruce Springsteen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the country. As the only one from this strong group they could announce quite surprisingly: Sold out!

 

Repeating the statistics from their debut visit to the Czech Republic in September 2008 when the group released their fourth album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and sold out the O2 Arena. Now finishing last year's tour in support of their fifth album Mylo Xyloto and the fact that they are visiting us after such a relatively short time, look again, a Czech fan is doubly pleased. In the last 14 days they are definitely not visiting any minor venues: The Olympic stadium in London, Munich, Stade de France in Paris ... and inbetween our Eden.

 

Journey from Russia and decent support band

 

"We had a choice between Warsaw and Prague, we do not go to both gigs. Thank God, here we are, although we bought fake tickets from a reseller in Ukraine, they found out at the last minute, and they had to buy tickets again," she said amidst a group of students from Russia, who together with the Slovaks at first sight formed the largest international fan community. But of course, Prim played at home.

 

And those were from the beginning going to the football stadium to watch a major league show (but you would rather compare it with the Premier League than the Champions League). It was still evident that the young indie-gothic singer Charli XCX that is on tour with Coldplay was rather extremely lucky (as a last-minute replacement for R & B hope Frank Ocean, who unfortunately lost his voice and cancelled the summer concerts), but indie pop-Marina and the Diamonds showcased bold curves in a tight dress and a decent mix of dance tunes with an impressive counterpoint in the form of saving shoegaze movement. Among their designs can be mentioned Garbage, Madonna, Blondie or Britney Spears and the essence of all this was her appearance. Although the category was not too memorable.

 

Visual orgy

 

This contrast was around 20.40 at the kick-off of the Coldplay concert. A giant stage, orchestral intro from the movie Back to the Future, a prelude in the form of the instrumental Mylo Xyloto and the fireworks, five circular screens with colourful, yet practical projections and the song Hurts Like Heaven. This specialty in the form of remote controlled bracelets that all visitors received at the entrance: They began to glow. Perhaps for the first time since Robbie William’s show six years ago in Germany, I had the feeling that visually "it is worth the money." Although not Coldplay, a band that began at the turn of the millennium with the album Parachutes and a bunch of melancholics - what you do with piano, guitars and my depression - I did not expect it.

 

And the atmosphere was even more cheerful with the song In My Place off the crucial second studio album A Rush of Blood to the Head from 2002, which defined the sound of "big Coldplay". One thousand creatively cut out colored papers were fired into the air, including lead singer Chris Martin at the runway that was extended into the audience, and after the gig, they served as useful decoration for the groups taking pictures. Only once did Coldplay resort to the days when Chris Martin rather than gifts for daughter Apple and son Moses and wife Gwyneth Paltrow addressed to pay rent: In the form of song Yellow. "The dark" era of the band is still partially represented with the song Warning Sign or one of Coldplay’s biggest hits The Scientist, but otherwise the British rather acted in their lately merry way.

 

From depression to the optimistic pop-rock hits

 

There is no point in lamenting about it. Martin is simply a different character than Thom Yorke of Radiohead, even though many publicists wanted to connect them in the past.

 

You cannot expect from a guy who grew up with A-ha who were always on the way between total mainstream and more sophisticated pop (apart from the first album), who likes to listen to Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Arcade Fire, but also for example Take That, Leona Lewis or Westlife, to continue searching for more complex means of addressing the audience and introduce for example Janelle Monáe instead of Rihanna.

 

One can only guess how this straightforward optimism and often banal tunes, as in the case of single Paradise, work live: Sometimes perfectly, even in the song Viva La Vida, which the audience sang long after the concert. Sometimes less: Be it the hymnal, but rather stereotypical and seemingly empty Do not Let It Break Your Heart from the last album.

 

The concert could certainly be longer than 100 minutes, and who read the setlist from some of the islanders' / Coldplay's recent shows could not be surprised. But Coldplay have chosen that rather than surprise, they will fulfill dreams and expectations. Both own and the fans' dreams and expectations. They do pop-rock hits with Rihanna, fireworks and balloons. I can very well imagine that at the Coldplay concert in Prague on Sunday, half of those participating feel that a dream is fulfilled, and the next time we will need even more space, because they sell 50,000 tickets. And why? Because they do it well enough.

What a shame, really ... and so unfair that having lots of money can make you get closer to Coldplay... thanks God I've been lucky enough to be with the guys too... but seeing this pictues makes me angry...

Confetti, lasers, fireworks. Coldplay shone in Prague

 

The sold-out stadium and probably the currently most popular band on the British islands in front of the fans; it could be somewhat anticipated in advance that the Coldplay concert will be "really big". The stage reaching from one side to another, five large circular screens, speakers and lights everywhere, simply huge. As was the concert itself.

 

The warning: "Please put on your bracelet. It is part of the show." did not blink on the screens in vain. Namely, Chris Martin of Coldplay at the very beginning asked , "Is there anybody out there?" the colorful wristbands handed out to all the concert-goers at the entrance started to flash in all colors and the whole stadium looked like a Christmas lights warehouse coming alive.

 

Other warnings could for example read: "Put on your sunglasses - to prevent getting blind from all those colors. In quick succession, the band launched a small firework, lit up the galleries with colorful lasers, fired several rounds of coloured confetti (by the way, in addition to hearts also including the M and X letters, which were the initials of their latest album Mylo Xyloto, aka viva la the sense of detail, and scattered a few dozen large inflatable balloons.

 

With a spectacular light and visual show the band managed quite well to disguise the fact that their last mentioned album is not just as good as the previous ones. Perhaps Paradise sounded slightly less annoying live than on the radio (someone explain to me why Coldplay degrade themselves like this?), but it is a pity that thanks to the ten (!) new songs, there was no time for more "pure Coldplay" from the era of the debut album Parachutes. Unfortunately, the excellent Yellow remained the only one played (off that album).

Although sometimes it seemed like that, it would be unfair to call their show circus. Coldplay's performance was well presented also in terms of musical quality

 

Even though Chris Martin was saving his voice in the first part of the show - especially the high notes - (e.g. the aforementioned Yellow was far from perfect); at the remaining concert he seemed totally confident in all positions. Equally confident as the trio behind him and another thirty thousand people in front of them - when The Scientist, Fix You and other songs were played the audience were singing in chorus.

 

After the amazingly escalated God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, Chris, Jon, Guy and Will left the main stage, and for the next three songs they moved to the end of the ramp.

 

Among others, the current single Princess of China was played, where Rihanna also appeared, but this time - in contrast to at the Parisian gig - only in 2D design on the screen behind the band. And in order for Coldplay to be "in touch" and enjoyed also by the fans at the back, the next few songs were played on a miniature stage in the middle of the madding crowd.

 

 

The madness was actually on spot. Even if Coldplay did not provide the best musical experience of this year, it was undoubtedly the biggest show - no matter how infantile it might appear. It was appreciated also by the fans in the packed tram number 22, who were spontaneously singing – in unison - the Viva La Vida chant on their way home.

The current position of the British band Coldplay is not too enviable. The band has already enjoyed as much fame as possible, and thus many musical publicists and wanna-be experts are happy to knock them down. Yes, the fact that a band is popular among general public is not a guarantee it plays music of high quality, but on the other hand, is also not a guarantee of the opposite. Others are complaining that the quartet has sold out, recording usual pop tunes, attracting teenage fangirls puckering their lips in front of mobile phones to the concerts instead of proper music enthusiast and who knows what else. Even a connection with Nečas and Kalousk could be found (reference Czech politicians, not too popular, apparently). Many of them will certainly express themselves in comments, to say what they think is so bad about Coldplay and how much they hate them. But, this is only their problem.

 

Today, Coldplay are a stadium act with all what it takes. And as the classic says, we can discuss about it, we can argue about it, we can even disagree with it, but that is about all what can be done against it.

 

However, until the main stars arrived on the Sunday evening, the audience in Eden had to endure Charli XCX and Marina And The Diamonds. The first of the named led by the charismatic Charlotte Aitchison bet on electropop, wilderness and lascivious gestures. The sigles like "Stay Away", "Nuclear Seasons" or "You're The One" from the current EP were introduced but even if there was clearly an effort, through half-full galleries and minimum interest, the audience has clearly shown this was not the act they had bought tickets for.

 

In spite of the excellent concert, a similarly cold reception was given also to Marina And The Diamonds, and if you have seen this young Welsh girl at the Grape festival in Piešťany last year, you might have felt a bit sorry for her. Then, she showed off like an incredibly nice, modest, funny and humble girl who respects her fans and attention she got. And if you were looking closely, she hasn't lost any of those features since then and tried to win the audience over with her excitable synthpop. A all she needed to do were a few innocent sexy looks.

 

Apart from them, she added a new ace to her novel voice colour and the hit "Hollywood" since last year, in form of the hit "Primadonna" from the second studio album. "You know this one, don't you?" asked a probably 17-year old girl her boyfriend with a hopeful voice. He did not. And wasn't the only one. Czech audience often needs to shove songs under their nose, not searching for anything and not wanting anything new or unknown. And that is a shame especially in case of such performers as Marina Lambrini Diamandis, which is the singer's real name.

 

 

Five minutes after half past nine, the quartet of Guy Berryman, Johnny Buckland, Will Champion and also Chris Martin in colour-splasged trousers came on stage and proved to know very well that the first ten minutes are the most important ones (as well as the finale). If they don't win the people over at the beginning, it's too late. They prepared themselves thoroughly. As soon as Jay-Z's "99 Problems", "Back to the Future Theme" and the "Mylo Xyloto" intro finished, the two-hour show was opened with the current single, "Hurts Like Heaven". With all the parade and the frontman's addition: "I promise you to give it all we can and play our best concert ever." Classic cliche, you might say. But he was actually right. Colourful fireworks were flying high above the Eden Arena, lasers were dividing the audience to several parts and on five hige projections, viewers could enjoy detail shots of their favorites.

 

But that wasn't all. Already with the following "In My Place", there were hundreds of thousands of colourful confetti shot from all sides of the crowd and covered not only the fascinated faces of the audience but also the stage reaching to the middle of the arena. Then, during "Major Minus", large beach balls were released to the crowd, inprinted in graffiti colours of the current album, of course. All of that was accompanied by colourful blinking wristband handed out at the entrance. It was the wristband what had probably the largest share in the strong start as well as unforgetability of the whole show. If the lit up wristband pulsing to the rythm will be the new standard for gigs following the lighters and mobile phones, I won't be complaining at all. It looked absolutely fantastically and many man had a hard time to cover the tears of emotion.

 

 

However, the packed Eden arena not only got an extremely strong beginning. The band knew very well when to reduce the effects or when to lit up everything they could. Older tunes as "Yellow", "The Scientist" or "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" sounded in a more stripped-down arrangements helping their strenght to beautifully bloom. Fortunately, they are not getting worn out as the time goes and when Martin had to swallow the first line of Yellow due to emotions from the ovations, he confirmed that not only the people under the stage are enjoying it but also the ones on stage.

 

During the whole show, the charismatic singer was running, dancing and jumping with a guitar on his back along the whole stage as if he was out of his senses and did not provide the 60-thousand eager eyes with a rest for a minute. And even if anyone else would fall to the ground after such workout, with all that madness, he was perfect also in terms of intonation. Hats off!

 

On the small stage in the centre of the auditorium, Coldplay played with Rihanna on projection behind them and piano in front of them the trio of songs "Princess Of China", "Up In Flames" and intimate "Warning Sign". Thereby, they were slowly but steadily preparing the ground for the anthemic finale. That belonged to the euphoric trio: starium sing-alond "Viva La Vida", the "o-o-oo-o-oo-o" of which was heard far behind the walls of the starium, maybe a bit underrated but fantastic single, "Charlie Brown" and much anticipated megahit "Paradise". And it was para - para -parade (more in the meaning of awsomeness in Czech).

 

Coldplay lived up to their reputation of good, smily and nice boys for the whole duration of the gig, but mostly at the time when they managed to mess up "Speed of Sound" during the encore on the small stage opposite the main one because of laughter, and had to play it again, apologising with a smile, "Sorry, we're having too much fun here". That way, the magnificent show obtained a pleasant human dimension.

 

Neither the conclusion was ripped off. "I hope they will play 'Fix You'," confessed several bystandars independently while waiting for the band to return to the stage. They did. And how! Even before that, "Clocks" sounded with a snipped of "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen, and then the first tones of the well-known melody sounded from behind the painted piano. The static view of Chris wriggling behind the piano provided the tune with intimity which has quickly dissapeared as the song started to escalate. By that time, the singer was swinging his jacket and when he started to run towards the audience, he jumped and at the moment - you know which one - a massive golden pyrotechnica exloded behind his back and flew high to the sky, the peak of the evening was made. And before the listeners could recover, "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" was sounding which has finished the show of the 6-Grammy Award winners as a single, colourful and neverending firework. 30-thousand people were returning home with wide smiles upon their faces and many of them didn't stop to sing even on a train.

 

Coldplay did not dissapoint with their pop feast for the eyes and ears. Right the opposite, they electrified many people and showed how a starium concert in 2012 shall look like. The Brits presented what they now best, went for it fully and if there is still someone who didn't like it, it's not the band's problem but problem of his/her personal taste. Thus, the overal rating of such a sophisticated and detailed show which is perfectly interconnected with the musical part cannot be other than maximum. Definite candidate for the concert of the year. 100 %.

I never tape or take pictures. Im always too busy enjoying myself sorry, but I would say it was in top 3 songs performed even though I prefer hurts like heaven from MX.

I'll try to put my story together before it gets too blurred.

Warning: It's more like a crazy fangirl story, so don't expect a serious musical review!

 

pre-show

 

So we met with Oliv in Bratislava on Friday and went to Prague together, spent Saturday sightseeing and on Sunday VERY early we went to the stadium.

It was still dark and nobody around but a security guy. He was bored so we chatted for a while, he went to take the pictures of the stage and came to show us.

Time was flying quite quickly, we decided to take a picture every hour and it was only the two of us until 8AM...

Just a few people arrived until 10AM and by midday, there were still only about 20 people in the queue at our gate. (and a similar number at the second gate).

It was fun, there were people from all over the world, SLovakia, Indonesia, Brazil, Canada, Italy... I counted about 10 nationalities only in my closest surrounding.

But still, there were so few people compared to the other shows I went to, I was a bit worried that the crowd might not be so good.

They let us in just before 4PM. The security guys were a bit confused (and confusing), at first they told us they will open between 2-3PM, then between 4-5, and in fact they opened about 3,50.

It was good that the gates were at the same side of the stadium as the stage, so we didn't have to run too far, only down the galleries and we were at the stage.

So all of us got to the barrier. We wanted to be at the ramp, on Jonny's side, so we got there. Out international mini-group - Italy, Slovakia, Indonesia, Brazil. We all had signs/flags/something mentioning our country, which can be seen on the panorama pic.

When we got in, the stadium started to fill only very slowly and we were still worried about the crowd. But it was getting better.

Before the support bands, there were some people walking around the stage, probably the fans who won meet and greet. They were taking pictures and Phil was with them showing them around.

Charli XCX was allright but Marina was fantastic. I don't know why the newspaper review wrote she was perceived coldly by the crowd, I think she won over almost everyone and the response was fine.

Inbetween the acts, as the roadies were walking around, they were getting so much cheering from the crowd, one of the roadies started to enjoy it and seemed like only walk up and down to get the applause. :-) It was like he was soundchecking our voices and we were louder and louder everytime he showed up.

Then R42 came to take the panorama picture and many of the people at the front knew so were cheering again.

I don't really like Jay-Z's music, but I was so happy when 99 Problems already started! After the many many hours of waiting, it was indescribable.

By that time, the crowd got very loud and we finally stopped worrying about it. ;)

When the boys came on stage, the noise was unbelievable considering it's quite a small stadium. I'm not sure whether 30 or 40 thousand, everyone says something else.

After In My Place, Chris said a few things in Czech, like good evening and we're happy to be here as always. He promised us the best concert ever (as always :laugh3:). I know all those things, heard them many times, but it's always amazing.

 

When the Yellow intro started, the cheering was so loud, Chris couldn't start singing. He tried to concentrate but just had to laugh and make the intro a bit longer.

It was apparent that they are impressed with the noise, they were really enjoying it, even Guy moved from his spot and walked around the stage.

I don't think I have to describe the whole atmosphere, the ones who experienced it know and the ones who didn't just need to experience, because it's indescribable!

The music, xylobands, confetti, fireworks, beach balls, etc. and amazing people around you make it the best thing.

So, what was a bit different for me this time: I made the banner, I posted a picture here, saying: Please, play Parachutes, please, eat more chocolate, please, come to Slovakia. I knew there wasn't a chance they will play it, but I just hoped for some response, so I held up the banner everytime some of them went by. Actually, Chris was acknowledging probably all of the banners, I saw him giving thumbs up and things like that on the catwalk. But it seems like he was looking everywhere else but my way. But when Viva finished and Charlie Brown started, he went from the Xstage back and suddenly turned to me, he mimed "PARACHUTES", nodded and blew a kiss to me!!! I was so shocked, I did't expect it at all! I got a bit of hope he might play Parachutes after all, when he said it, but he didn't. Nevermind. So, if anyone comes across a video of that, please please, let me know!

 

 

I didn't take too many pictures as I wanted to purely enjoy the show. I'll upload the few I took later.

Another nice moment came on the C-stage, when Chris messed up Speed of Sound at the very beginning, because they laughed and he said something like: "I'm sorry, I'm having too much fun!"

You know how it goes, it's everything so fast after the C-stage, Clocks, Fix You, Every Teardrop and that's the end...

But they were so impressed by the crowd all four of them were walking around the whole stage and catwalks aplauding and bowing about 5 minutes before the usual final bow. And after that, Chris kissed the stage.

 

After the show, we went to the back of the stadium, to see if we could meet the band, but after an hour or so I asked some English speaking crew and they said the band left right after the show. We knew it but we had to try...

There were Viva-chants sounding around the stadium even 2 hours after the show!

 

 

 

Ok, this was just too long, I apologize. I could have just written "WOW!" instead! ;)

It was so amazing to be there, after 9 months of waiting since the date was announced, meet the amazing fans from all over the world and to see the boys play again. It's so addictive, I can't wait to do that again and I wouldn't mind to go queuing again, even tomorrow if I had to.
