AMSTERDAM – De Britse band Coldplay probeert zijn fans telkens te verrassen op een nieuw album of tijdens concerten. "Anders ben je niet meer relevant", zegt drummer Will Champion in een exclusief interview met NU.nl.

Onlangs verscheen Coldplay’s vijfde studioalbum Mylo Xyloto, het resultaat van twee jaar werk. "Het was nogal een omvangrijke studiosessie", legt bassist Guy Berryman uit.

 

"Mylo Xyloto was het grootste project waaraan we gewerkt hebben. We zaten gedurende die twee jaar permanent in de studio, haast iedere dag van de week."

 

"We gingen met een aantal ideeën over hoe het moest klinken de studio in en we kwamen met iets compleet anders de studio weer uit", vertelt Berryman over de werkwijze van Coldplay. "We breiden een nummer telkens uit totdat het er niet meer beter op wordt", vult Champion aan. "Dan laten we het een weekje met rust."

 

Volgens Champion is dat de reden dat de nummers op Mylo Xyloto zo bombastisch zijn. "Het is onvermijdelijk dat onze muziek uiteindelijk zo klinkt. We worden erg aangetrokken tot een rijkdom aan geluiden. We houden van een complexe en volle sound. Soms begint het heel klein en sober, maar het eindresultaat klinkt reusachtig."

 

Tijd

 

"We hadden veel tijd en die hebben we volledig benut", aldus Berryman over de aanpak van Coldplay in de studio. "Maar we gaan wel effectief te werk. Als we maar drie maanden de tijd hadden gehad, dan weet ik zeker dat het ons ook gelukt was. We bleken echter twee jaar de tijd te hebben, dus we hebben de tijd genomen."

 

Toen Coldplay deze zomer optrad op Pinkpop, legde de band de laatste hand aan Mylo Xyloto. Champion: "We waren bezig met het afronden van het album terwijl we op festivals in Europa speelden. We hadden her en der kleine studio’s opgezet, waar we in onze vrije tijd gebruik van konden maken."

 

Arena’s

 

Berryman verklaart dat liedjes vaak hun definitieve vorm aannemen tijdens optredens van de band. "Het helpt ons om liedjes af te maken. Als je een nummer live speelt, begrijp je het beter. We weten ook dat wanneer we een album maken we die liedjes in arena’s en grote zalen gaan spelen."

 

Aanvankelijk was de intentie van Coldplay om een intiem album op te nemen. "We begonnen met akoestische liedjes, maar gaandeweg bleken we niet zo enthousiast te zijn over het concept van een akoestisch album. Wanneer je voor een grote groep mensen speelt, komen opnemen en touren in elkaars verlengde te liggen."

 

Geschrapt

 

Nummers als Paradise en Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall kwamen op de cd terecht, maar veel materiaal werd geschrapt. "Heel veel liedjes hebben het album niet gehaald, vooral omdat ze niet goed genoeg waren", erkent Champion. "Anderen pasten niet, maar waren op zichzelf wel goed. Ik weet nog niet wat we ermee gaan doen."

 

Het idee voor een EP wordt geopperd, zoals Coldplay’s Prospekt’s March uit 2008. "We hadden het er toevallig net over", zegt Berryman over een gesprek dat hij enkele minuten eerder had met zanger Chris Martin. "Als een liedje goed is, is het zonde om het niet te gebruiken. We willen ze op de een of andere manier uitbrengen."

 

Hotelkamers

 

Aan het einde van dit lange en uitputtende jaar, kijken de bandleden van Coldplay uit naar een paar vrije weken. "Het gras is altijd groener bij de buren", volgens de haast continu gapende Berryman. "Soms verlang ik er naar om bij een bank te werken", lacht hij. "Na tien jaar in hotelkamers is het bijzondere er wel een beetje af."

 

De drummer en bassist hebben er vrede mee dat Chris Martin alle aandacht naar zich toe trekt. "We voelen ons prettig met de dynamiek binnen de band", vertelt een eveneens wat vermoeid ogende Champion. "Dat werkt goed voor ons. We leven een redelijk normaal leven, voor zover dat mogelijk is. Ik kan nog steeds een kroeg in."

 

Balans

 

"Het is voor ons van groot belang dat om een goede balans te vinden tussen werk, plezier, toewijding en ons familieleven", vervolgt hij. "We hebben veel geluk gehad, wat dat betreft. We staan ook op goede voet met elkaar, onze vriendschap is hechter dan ooit. En we hebben een ongelofelijk jaar achter de rug."

 

"We bevinden ons momenteel in prettig positie. We hebben een stormachtige periode in de muziekindustrie overleefd." Berryman is het met hem eens. "Ik ben trots op alles wat we bereikt hebben. Wanneer mensen zeggen dat we de populairste band ter wereld zijn en dergelijke, dan is dat leuk om te horen."

 

Statistieken

 

"Ik begrijp het alleen niet zo goed", voegt hij eraan toe. "Ik zie dat niet als iets dat voor mij heel belangrijk is. We concentreren ons alleen op de artistieke kant van het verhaal. Al het andere is bijzaak voor ons. Elke manager komt bij de release van een album met nieuwe statistieken op de proppen. De wereld zit vol statistieken."

 

De nummertjes en verkoopaantallen doen de bassist zichtbaar weinig. "Het is leuk om genomineerd te worden voor awards en we zouden ons ook bijgesloten voelen wanneer dat niet zou gebeuren – maar Coldplay draait puur om vriendschap en de albums die we maken."

When Coldplay performed at Pinkpop this summer, the band put the finishing touches on Mylo Xyloto. Champion: "We were busy finishing the album while we were playing at festivals in Europe. We had set up several small studios thatwe could make use of in our spare time ."

 

Arenas

 

Berryman states that songs often get their final form during performances of the band. "It helps us to finish songs. If you play a song live, you understand it better. We also know that when we make a record we have to play those songs in arenas and large venues."

Statistics

 

"I just do not understand it so well," he adds. "I do not see that as something that is very important to me. We concentrate only on the artistic side of the story. Everything else is secondary to us. Every manager comes with every release of an album with new statistics. The world is full of statistics. "

 

The simple numbers and sales figures do the bassist visibly little. "It's nice to be nominated for awards and we would feel left out if that wouldn't happen - but Coldplay is pure friendship and the albums that we make."
