Dumb question about Viva

Featured Replies

Is the album title "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends" mean to be two titles, or one?

In other words, "Here's our new album. It's called Viva La Vida, or, you can also refer to it as Death And All His Friends."

Or is it suppose to be one entire sentence, "Life the life or death and all his friends."

I've been wondering.................... :P

There are no dumb questions, only dumb people.

:D

The double title was supposedly inspired by Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds. ;)

I think it's supposed to be read as one entire sentence. But I never call it that, just Viva La Vida or Viva.

I'm kidding, I hate smartass internet people, ask whatever you want. ;)

I'm not sure where I saw the JT thing, but Chris definitely said that. I think the second title is redundant.

Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends is the Escapist

I think it's one whole title. But of what I remember seeing in an interview is that it has two options for the name within the title because it's up to the listener to decide what they want to call it. If you find it happy, uplifting, inspiring, etc. you can call it Viva La Vida, but if you find it depressing, sad, heartbreaking, etc. you can call it Death and All His Friends. Then a third alternative is if you see it as both then you can just call it the whole thing: Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. :)

I think it was that they couldn't decide which one they wanted to use, that they had narrowed it down to those two titles. So they just used both.

Or they wanted to present the duality, either follow life - try to be positive, optimistic, etc. or death - be a pessimist...

Although the latter song essentially has the same message as VLV...

I think it's meant to be a whole title. If you think about it, this whole album is on life, and death, and etc. So the title speaks about life and death... Well I find that logical

What's the meaning behind the title? 'Well, it's called one or the other. Depending on whether you find it uplifting or depressing. It's kinda like a colouring book.' Martin stops and shakes his curly head. 'No, it's not like a colouring book at all. We thought it was funny that some people would listen to a song of ours and find it really warm and embracing. And other people would listen to the same song and find it really miserable. So we thought, this time, let's not tell anyone what they're supposed to think. If you find it depressing you can call it Death and All His Friends. And if you find it uplifting, Viva La Vida. And if you're into mining, you call it Or[e].'

I think there are in fact dumb questions. But this is not one of them.

Call it what you want!

It was explained by the band that it's an "either or" title. You can call it whatever you prefer, though it's been just called Viva La Vida most of the time.

This is your answer  which was explained from the band when it came out.
