Viva La Vida Medley (UPDATED: The March on Violet Hill))

UPDATE:

Hey Coldplaying! Chapter 3 at last :)

------------------------

Hi guys!

Its been a long time since an update from me on this Medley project. As you might remember, this is a project I've started in order to help me get more practice at arranging, composing, performing and mixing and, as this is a prototype to an official version, I've been looking for feedback to make changes. Well, I got a tremendous amount of feedback since I've uploaded the vids to YouTube and I've taken time away to work on other projects, work in studios and take some lessons.

Long story short (and thanks to a helpful reminder from TechnicolorMX), I'm going to be working on part 3 this month. Until its ready, here's an outtake that didn't quite make the third chapter but it was interesting enough to hold on to.

Thanks for taking the time to listen as always! :)

Part 2:

------------------------

Hi everyone!

I'm a huge Coldplay fan and have dedicated the last few weeks to creating a medley for my favourite album, Viva La Vida. I'm looking for as much feedback to help fine tune it before releasing it properly and I figured if there was anywhere that might appreciate it (or hate it, in case I butchered it) it would be here.

Any (ahem, constructive) feedback is welcome and wanted!

I hope you like it!

Amazing! The way you used the piano. Might I recommend you use Chris Martin's voice at certain parts so it sound professional. Not that you sound bad, you sound fantastic. It might just give it that edge to it you know? :) Maybe use the actual guitar and synthesizer parts in the medley. But keep the piano parts because they sound amazing.

Exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. Thank you!

That's an interesting idea to swap out all my vocals for Chris' originals. The idea was to originally try to recreate and rearrange everything on my own (vocals, strings, drums, bass, guitar, piano, enoxifying, etc.) but once all 4 parts are finished, and if his original mastered singing is in the right key and tempo, I'd certainly swap it out and make a more 'official' version.

I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment! Thank you :)

i love the instrumentation, but not so much the vocals. no offense, of course! i just think it would be better suited as an instrumental piece. any chance of you releasing it sans-vocals?

Wow, respect mate!

Exactly that kind of thing I always wanted to do, but couldn't really (yet :D ).

I think you did a really great job, please continue that.

The only minor criticism would be directed at your vocals (not your singing), but I think

they sound like there would be too much effects on them.

I would prefer them a bit more "natural", but that's just my opinion.

That's pretty great! :D I also agree with what others have said about the vocals. Not that I don't like them, it's just that I would quite like to hear an instrumental version. I like what you did with that snippet of 42! Plus that small bit of Bucket for a Crown just reminded me how beautiful that song is and what a shame it was that it was never released :(

I agree, the instrumental is ace! but i'm not a fan of the vocals.

But it's great! You even included some Apparatjik there! :surprised:

The instrumentation is wonderful. I'd ditch the vocals, no offense.

Thank you for the feedback! Didn't expect to get so man hits so quickly...

Although I appreciate how kindly you're wording it, I'm not even remotely offended about anyone not liking my vocals. Songwriting is my heart and soul; this is merely just to see what I am good at, what needs work, and what needs axing. So long as you're honest, I've got nothing but love for ya :)

To answer a few points, its a 4 part series (Violet Hill, Life in Technicolor, Viva...I haven't forgotten the big ones) and there's more work to do but everything is structured around vocals in certain areas and not in others. Once its done though, I'm happy to release an instrumental although I'd have to shorten some parts up (music underneath the singing tends to be repetitive). But when you're at near 25 min total, any shortening is good. And I might just leave the vocal parts out or replace them with strings or piano. What do you think?

As for the Apparatjik reference I'm surprised you caught it ;) I wanted to make something easily accessible to casual Coldplay fans but also dense in their world to appeal to the more hardcore Coldplay fans. There's even a Yellow reference in there somewhere....

For the different effects on vocals, its more towards learning how to mix different vocal effects (crunching guitar amps, synced reverb/delays, soft compressions, etc). Maybe I'm leaning on them too heavily though. Thanks for the opinion! But honestly dude (dreamorlife), if this is something you've always wanted to do, do it! No more waiting, no more 'I'm not good enough yet'. There's no point testing the cliff's edge: run and jump shouting and whether or not you fly or fall, it'll be a hell of ride.

Aaaaaand if there's any way I can help that I can manage, I'll try ;)

Finally, filiprasmusson, thank you so much. It means so much more to me because your avatar looks blown away and I like to think this is why :)

And Bucket for a Crown, lovely song....RIP

i'd vote for replacing the vocal melodies with strings/piano :)

Oh my god, I LOVE this! It super well done! I like the singing but it needs to be fixed in some parts. LOVE cemeteries and lost!!

Feedback: k guitar part in cemeteries a bit too loud

staticy radio thing is too scratchy (does this make any sense?)

love the end bit with a piano and violin (?)

cool paintings!

Please make the rest! But more important, please make one for myloxyloto!!

I love this. The only thing I would change is putting Chris' voice in.

This was breathtaking. Please send it to Oracle, cause the band should really, really hear it.

I like everything about it but would like to have a instrumental only version beside this one, because it adds to the mysteriousness,y'know?

Also, I am in a band and I'd take you for a collaborator right away if I could. Cause you did some amazing stuff there, keep it up.

 This...

I eagerly await the rest of this. This is going on my iPod because its so fucking beautiful. With your permission of course! :D

Thank you very much guys, your words go a long way. More than you know.

I'm happy to hear you appreciate what went into it as a musician and I'd love to talk about a collab once its all done and the dust settles. One thing I would say to you is yeah the industry is all about Pro Tools for recordings but don't count out Logic. There is some amazing things that program can do once you begin to understand it.

And as for putting it on an ipod, I'm honoured of course and I won't stop you (and I did get permission from Viva La Vida's publisher Universal) but I'd suggest waiting as this isn't a final version. There's a bit more fixing to do with the levels, clearing up the sound and redoing some elements.

It won't be longer now, though. I promise :)

Awesome.

The arrangement is awesome, feels like a movie sountrack, but it should be an instrumenatal, not that I don't like the vocals but it would be better without it, if you replace it with strings and pianos will sound really good. The video with the paitings is awesome thank you very much! Oh and the little parts of Life In Technicolor is some points gave it a even greater feeling of a soundtrack, really awesome, great job!

Are you going to finish these or have you disappeared???????????

  • Author

Haha no I haven't disappeared, I've been hard at work on the second part and its done as of an hour ago (finally!). Its publishing to YouTube as we speak so once its up (3-4 hours for HD) I will come back and update this thread with the link.

I have always had the first, third and fourth parts of this medley planned and a lot finished but the second part was an undertaking because it was fitting in the songs from that era without disrupting the flow and story I was going for. On top of that, there was two types of feedback from here and other sites: ditch the vocals and work on the vocals.

I began to rework the whole piece to remove the vocals as, let's face it, I'm not very good (I've only just started vocal training recently with a long way to go) and it began to get very confusing, convoluted and un-Coldplay. And I realized I was moving away from what I was originally trying to do: find my strengths and work on my weaknesses. I will definitely release an instrumental when all's said and done but until then, here's another beta that will be corrected with feedback.

On a side note, thank you so much Coldplaying fans. You really are a loyal and generous community and I appreciate you giving this a chance :)

(Aaaaaand (if you are looking forward to it) it is much in the style of the first one but this one will be more for the dedicated Coldplay and Viva La Vida fans. Trust me on that).

PS MyloLaVida - It won't be so long for the next part as it's mostly done and if you thought the first chapter was cinematic....you haven't heard anything yet ;)

Sorry I was away! I've been looking forward to this but let me break it down :)

- I really like what you did with Christmas Lights, the orchestra (or whatever it is) makes it sound like its from a movie soundtrack. And I like the singing but I think it needs to be redone EDIT: The singing needs to be redone I mean, its hard to understand

- LOVE A Spell A Rebel Yell & the remixed Goldrush! But the singing doesn't really fit it on Goldrush. I don't mean it in a bad way, I just don't really know how else to say it

- LOVE Postcards From Far Away!! Especially the intro! Is that a Coldplay song in the intro???

- Ummmmm, Solid Ground I didn't like so much. It doesn't help that Coldplay doesn't have an original to compare to but the singing just sounded....not good. I'm sorry :(

- And I didn't like Chinese Sleep Chant and Fall of Man for ONE reason: too short! Its such a great sound, any chance you can send me an mp3 of just Chinese sleep chant extended?? Pretty please?? ;)

- Love the outro but it doesn't really sound liek St Stephen. I like how you keep using the Viva La Vida and Life in Technicolor melodies.

I'm sorry, I really really liked it and its going on my ipod! But the singing needs a lot of work! Don't stop trying though! :) And I'm looking forward to the next parts! Where is Violet Hill and Glass of Water and D&AHF! Can't wait!

Keep up the great work :)

Haha so many emoticons.... I appreciate the feedback, good and bad and this is very detailed. Thank you Mylo! :)

Once its completed, send me an email and i will happily send you whichever bits you'd like (although not extended, its a bit more complicated than copy/paste). And I don't want to give away what's coming but if you're ticking them off, there's some big ones on their way!

LOVE IT!!!!!!

But I agree with the rest: I would love to hear a instrumental version

I also love the video's: the font and the paintings are just perfect, the really suit the music/theme.
