2013 albums of the year and songs of the year - Deadline 15th December

It's time for the annual

Albums & Songs of the Year Poll!

The rules are the same as always:

  • Make a ranked list of your 5 to 25 top original studio albums released this year and post it in this thread. After the deadline, there will be a countdown of Coldplaying's favourite new albums.

  • Make a ranked list of your 5 to 25 top songs released this year and post it in this thread.

  • The deadline is Sunday, 15th December at 23:59 GMT

  • Original studio albums only, please. No EPs, live albums, reissues, or compilation albums. Cover albums allowed. Soundtracks must be primarily original material. For example the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World soundtrack was not eligible, but the Scott Pilgrim original score was eligible.

  • A list must have at least 5 albums to count. You may list up to 25 albums/songs. Lists must be ranked by the deadline. Unranked lists will be fed to the forum goat.

  • Albums must have been originally released between December 1st 2012 and December 1st 2013. The original release date is the first official release date in the US or UK, whichever is first. International-only releases go by the first official release date worldwide.

  • Songs must have been originally released between December 1st 2012 and December 1st 2013, either as a standalone single or part of an album.

  • You may edit your list at any time up to the deadline. Post your tentative lists here and I will post a link to it in the second post. The list I link to will be the list I count, so make sure you edit your original list or let me know if you post a new one. If you want to vote for both Album and Song of the year, can you keep both lists on the same post

  • You can vote for just albums of the year or just songs of the year, or vote for both, it's upto you

  • Please number your albums and write the artist name before the album name. For example, #1. Radiohead - In Rainbows
(This will save eons of time and will help you find out the results much sooner. Thanks.)

  • You cannot vote for In Rainbows or Jedward

  • Jai Paul 'album' isn't allowed as it's a compilation 'album' of demos

As far as I'm aware the only new albums I've listened to and liked enough to listen to more than about three times are:

1. Boards Of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest

2. Atoms For Peace - Amok

3. My Bloody Valentine - mbv

4. Arcade Fire - Reflektor

5. The Flaming Lips - The Terror

6. John Hopkins - Immunity

And I only truly truly like the top 3.

Taken from the Jai Paul Wikipedia page:

2013 Album Leak

On April 14 of 2013, a user uploaded an album to Bandcamp that appeared to be a release of music by the artist. Several sources, including Pitchfork Media, reported that the release posted to Bandcamp was Jai Paul's debut album. However, on the 15th of April 2013, Jai Paul posted a tweet to confirm the rumours of it being a fake, and warned not to buy the album, with an official statement expected soon. On April 17, XL released the following short statement: "As widely reported, on Sunday 14th April, music by XL Recordings artist Jai Paul was illegally made available via a fake Bandcamp account. This music was not uploaded by Jai and it’s not his debut album – it is a collection of various unfinished recordings from Jai’s past. Neither XL or Jai will take any money from the sale of this music. We have been working with Bandcamp and PayPal to resolve this situation and they have told us all purchases will be refunded within the next 7 days." It is alleged that this unfinished music was stolen from Paul.

So yeah. Considering Jai Paul himself doesn't count this as an album, perhaps we shouldn't, either. That's just my opinion, however.

Also, since we typically haven't done AOTY and SOTY polls at the exact same time, I have a question. If we post an AOTY list, are we then obligated to post a SOTY list too? I have a hard enough time coming up with my AOTY list, let alone trying to come up with a SOTY list.

Hmm. Problem with leaks is what if something happens like with Country On The Click by The Fall? That got leaked and so he pulled it and redid some songs. Also it actively encourages people to seek out the leaks to hear why people think it's so good, when whilst I don't particularly have a problem with the I don't think it should be actively encouraged.
