Blockflote
With the recent leak of the lengths of each 'Everyday Life' track, I would like to share my thoughts on how this album will work. First of all, I don't think this is really the first time they've done a double album; instead, I would give this label to 'X&Y'. It's a symmetrical album with 6 songs on each side, being the 'X' side the more pessimistic and the 'Y' side the more optimistic. Everyday Life use this same format structure with 'Sunrise' and 'Sunset', with the only difference that now each side has a total of 8 songs. Next we have 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends', which is an album that has 9 full songs and 4 short songs (3 of them as hidden tracks) , all of them under the same musical concept. Here Everyday Life takes the melodic structure as a reference, having a total of 8-9 full songs and a large number of 7-8 short songs, with the only difference that all of them are direct tracks instead of some being hidden. TL;DR: Everyday Life takes the format structure of X&Y and combine it with the melodic structure of VLVODAAHF under the concept of political and social problems. I just love these two albums in terms of concept and fluidity, and I'm sure I will like Everyday Life on the same way.
coldplaykb
Very well said. I said from the get-go that this was going to be more like X&Y. Really not sure why it's being called a double album when it's really just an album with two halves/themes. Actually more like a an EP/double EP lol.
shred
It's a little disappointing that it's not actually a double album. Cause to me a double album = 2 physical CDs. But I take what I can get from the boys. With the disappointment of AHFOD, they reading me the yellow pages for 53mins and I'll be happy. :) 1
The Philosopher
Usually, I like songs with long lengths, but let's not forget some Coldplay's amazing short songs like Life In Technicolor, Don't Panic, U.F.O. or Chinese Sleep Chant. If Sunrise (the song), BrokEn, When I Need A Friend, Guns, Èkó, Cry Cry Cry and Old Friends are as good, I will be satisfied. (I'm not including in this group WOTW / POTP just because I think that it is like an intro or something)
The Philosopher
I was wondering if Èkó and Cry Cry Cry could be connected, since Èkó means Baby in Yoruba.
The Adversary
I think the whole “double album” thing from them is just a bit of a marketing gimmick like the way they said MX was a concept album when it wasn’t really a concept album in any sort of traditional sense. They’ve said in the past that would never do an album more than 45 minutes long too. I think also it’s a way for them to justify to themselves a way of having a longer album.

Yeah, I thought the same. It's a conventional album but I'd take a great normal album like this one over a crappy full double album anytime.

Shudder at the thought of it.
Blockflote
I was wondering if Èkó and Cry Cry Cry could be connected, since Èkó means Baby in Yoruba. I don't think so. The story of Eko is very precise, while Cry Cry Cry is more open to interpretation. Edit: I think Eko is instead probably connected in some ways to Orphans. MX is totally a concept album, so I don't understand what are you talking about. All the songs came about the same theme, with the story of the comics behind, and are connected in a melodical, lyrical and a visual way. And so, most of Coldplay's albums do this in a very good way, except the rest of them don't have a comic behind.

Blockflote
If you have never seen the comics (which I haven’t) you’d never know it was a concept album. As I said, the majority of them are not connected only because of a story behind (like MX) but also lyrically, melodically and visually. In this case specifically, it's easy to see the visual connection (all the graffiti/color vs darkness/glow), the melodical connection (electric sound, heavy bass, louder guitar) and the lyrical connection (rebelion, oppression, love, struggle). Again, seems to me that you're not identifying the parameters of what a concept is.
shred
If you have never seen the comics (which I haven’t) you’d never know it was a concept album. I never saw the comics but I could tell that MX was a concept album because there was a cohesive flow to it. That’s what made it better than EL.

That’s what made it better than EL. You should try the comics, I can assure you that it will improve your experience with MX! On the other hand, yes, EL doesn't have that much of fluidity like MX, but it's still a concept album the same way Viva is. And I'm sure with time we will improve our understanding of how properly that album works.
